What is your image of Japan Reference (JRef) ?

What do you like or dislike in Japan Reference (not just the Forum) and what is your general image of it ?

I clicked everything hehe, well I get all the info I need and I don't think there should be much more changes...except 1 thingy maybe, to see how many users are in chat ;-) would be very handy !!

I voted for everything except practical and anime; not that I'm against them, but that I have no immerdiate plans in Japan and that I don't get much anime in Japanese (no time, to be honest).

I am greatly satisfied with what's been created on JREF since its conception. This is quite close to my idea of civilization; memory that is preserved, appreciated, discussed, accumulated, and growing.

I'm sure there's another subforum for suggestions, but I'll leave some here, too.

1. Can we have more/rearranged categorizing of the subforums?
For example, I've noticed Lina's "The Pronunciation of German" thread, and hope that we had a separate subforum for the languages/linguistics within the English subforum. I think that should draw a lot of attention from both our members and from the outside.

2. Can we have individualized "virtual thread tree" only visible to the individual user? That might be too complicated/or costly to implement; but if it could be done, people could personalize their forum activity with their own logic/preference without interfering with the general forum structure or other people's preferences.

3. Can the search function be revamped? I've noticed that many times the search gives zero reult when I know for sure that the keyword sought is in there somewhere because I put them there. So I would like to suggest that a slower but more thorough search be allowed on top of the current "indexed searc" which is by nature not synchronized with the latest database until someone rehashes it for an updated index.

I'm quite happy now, but there's always room for improvement.

Technically, the only think you can do now is closing the subforums you are not interested in by clicking on the "collapase button" (double arrow, up or down, on the right-side of the category separators) and choose to get the posts from only one selected subforum (option in the scroll menu from "new posts")

Thomas is the one to take care of this. It seems that the search engine doesn't always work with Internet Explorer, but works better in Mozilla or Firefox.

I am rebuilding the search index as I'm typing these letters. Please let me know if there are any improvements.

It seems that the search engine doesn't always work with Internet Explorer, but works better in Mozilla or Firefox.

Now I understand it depends on the navigator. One half-solution that works for me in the limbo is to google the keyword with "jref," which has the obvious drawback of including the Randy (Randall?) Institue, but it doesn't miss anything that the spiders had stored up there!

A solution to avoid Randy is to type site:jref.com (if you want the forum only then add site:jref.com/forum/ )
