What First Got You Interested?

Cars and motorsport. The culture of motorsport and engine tuning in Japan is fascinating to me.
So much that im going to get myself involved!

I second that, car's are my next REAL interest.. My camera is full of 85% car shots while being in Japan. 🙂

My interest came after my first trip there in Aug 2001. I had just got my passport and was recently dump by my first long term girlfriend. My friend was going to Japan to visit her parents living on base in Yokoska and asked if I wanted to tag along for 2.5 weeks. I said yes because I need to get away for awhile. I loved it the minute the plane landed. I still can't pin point what I like about Japan. I thinks it everything. I even like those noisy bug that are all over the Tokyo area in the summer. My new girlfriend is Japanese. I met her here in the states. Now I'm going to Japan for my third time in a few weeks to see her and do a little salmon fishing with her father (we both fish a lot on our free time) My girl will move to the states next year but we will try to back twice a year. I've also started to learn Japanese. It's fun, but difficult!

Zacada... ahh they are so urusai! I get them at home during the summer too, little bastards wake me up sometimes!

Since a kid (I'm still one but not so little, lol), I always found asian women interesting, I had a special admiration for them (here in brazil we have a lot of japanese immigrants, especially in Sao Paulo).

Then like almost 'J-interested' people in the world I started to watch Anime, and them boom. Now I am crazy for almost any japanese-related thing.

Anime!!

I've first watch DragonBall Z..

later on I learn that it's from Japan.. short after I knew this fact, I watched a television program about traveling.. the women who was traveling was in Japan and showed al the things of Japan: culture, language, nature, the busy city (Tokyo) ^_^

Immediately I wanted to know more about the country and I was looking for a penfriend.. I did it via a website and I'm still writing with that girl and friend ^_^ :p

And now.. waiting to go to Japan XD

What got me interested in Japan? Watching the original Robotech series from begining to end when it first aired in the 80's.

1.I have yellow fever.

2.modern japanese culture matches my beliefs about society.

3.i love the city, nightlife, and technology..that's japan.

4.awesome history..and natural landscapes.

First and for most the FOOD!!!

I remember when I was about 10 I got an SNES and found out alot of games were made in Japan. This terrified me cuz I thought they were American..lol but then in history class our teachers taught us about the Asian countries. I loved Japan and all the samurai's.

And being a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles myself I aquired a Lust for Martial Arts...lol No joke.

Then one of my buddies recently showed me an anime called Samurai X and now Im hooked forever.

I just wish I could Chat with someone actually living in Japan so that I could get alot of the questions I have answered.

eh but yeah mostly from Food and Video Games.

yup

* I took a trip to Hawaii and went to a party and met several Japanese people and Americans who had taught English in Japan and they recommended going.

* In Seattle a lot of companies do business with Japanese companies and there is a lot of Japanese influence in the area.

* My uncle is Chinese and his family moved to Japan when he was high school aged. He used to tell me stories about his time in Japan.

Are there any left in Brazil now? We have thousands and thousands of Brazilians (and Peruvians) living and working in my area here in Japan. Please remind the last person to leave Brazil to turn out the lights.

long time ago

long, long time ago, when i was 5 y.o. (and that asian were absolutely not a common sight in europe) i fell in love with the daughter of the japanese ambassador who came in the same pre-school as i did. (the daughter, not the father...) everybody was mocking her, ( how stupid and cruel kids can be...) and i remember just as if it was yesterday, she was crying. i was so totally admiratively obsessed by her eyes and fascinated by her beauty that i could not approach her for days, only look at her from far away, but i had numerous fights and arguments with my fellow schoolfriends trying to defend her.
since then...

...i have never stopped loving asian eyes, asian hair, asian women. through them i learned the asian culture ( mongolia, china, japan, korea, burma, viet-nam, malaysia, laos, indonesia, philippina ). i went there so many times, i even lived there for a while. i married a korean girl, then she died and i married a chinese woman.

sometimes i just wonder why i was born in europe, i feel more "asian" than european.

Well, it's easy to get a Japanese email friend - just go to Japan Guide at
japan-guide.com - Friendship

you have to become a member, but it doesn't cost you anything and it is quite safe. I've already mentioned this in another thread and others ageed that it was a good way to meet and email people from all over the world. You can type in the age group, nationality etc. of the person you wish to find and it will take you through a forum of those people who posted ads for the same thing you want to do. Just a suggestion... :-)

I suppose it was many things that got me interested in Japan. When I was younger all the cartoons I watched came from Japan, all the videogames I played came from Japan aswell. So I guess it was natural to develop an interest. Over time the interest grew more and more and it ended up becoming a love.

I suppose my first expose to Japanese culture was through videogames, then several years later though anime. Once I started watching anime I just couldn't stop :D, and well here I am :D

Well, my interest began wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-ay back in 1977 when I was stationed in Yokosuka while in the Navy.

From day one after I arrived, I was instantly fascinated with the sights, the sounds, the culture and the people. For an inner city kid who never did much in the way of traveling, it was all a boundlessly incredibly experience. Each day was a new adventure and I was in a near constant state of wide-eyed wonder.

Then came my immersion into the awesome world of J-Pop music, thanks to the legendary Pink Lady (see avatar to your left). The music back then was just so amazingly cool, even though I couldn't understand a word I was listening to, that didn't take anything away from how much fun J-Pop music was, and still is today.

Even though I only got to spend a year and a half in Japan, my stay there left a permanent impression upon me. So much so that after 25 years away, I returned to Japan in 2003 to relive pleasant old memories----and finally see Pink Lady in concert during their current reunion tour. All in all, Japan is COOL!!!
👍

True, a fundamental (the most important?) reason for such love for Japan.

3.i love the city, nightlife, and technology..that's japan.
Oh yeah, "maximum development"!!

4.awesome history..and natural landscapes.
Yes, so perfect culutre, history, and really beautiful places!!

Not to mention all the positive attention i get
In this I wouldn't be so lucky.

It was Sonic The Hedgehog which started it all off for me. I remember visiting a friend's house as a child, we played the original game and I adored it. I ended up pestering my dad to buy me a Mega Drive and thankfully, he eventually did. After years upon end of gaming, I noticed that in most Japanese RPGs (Shining The Holy Ark and Shining Force III in particular) - there was a unique form of artwork for the character designs. I later discovered that this "style" if you will was featured in anime and manga. So one day (1998), I went into a local video store - found the anime section and picked up a random title which looked interesting. That title was none other than Neon Genesis Evangelion. From that day forth, I was hooked. I even still have all of those original Eva VHS tapes! Anime and manga caused me to broaden my interests to Japan itself and even other parts of Asia (namely South Korea, Hong Kong and China).

Where am I now? I've been learning Japanese for 2 years - taking my GCSE in it May 2005; sitting the JLPT 四級 on December 5th in London; possibly visiting Tokyo in October and going to Japan for a year with some friends in about 2 years time.

Yay ^^

I first got interested in Japan through anime .... after a while I started to like the songs from the anime series....eventually this led to non anime Japanese music like Gackt and Ayumi Hamasaki.....after that it just kinda evolved....

actually, i've never been interested in japan, but my wife is japanese. we lived together for five years in other countries when she was my girlfriend and then she said she was coming back for good, so, being interested in travelling, i came along. not long after that, she got pregnant and we got married. her dad bought us a house and we got jobs at his company. i don't mind living in japan, it's largely free from crime and the women are beautiful. i'm far more interested in countries like nepal, india and thailand, in which i spent a couple of years, but for practical purposes it's better to live in japan, although i think thailand would be ok to live (great food). the only thing i can't do here really is my main passion - flying light aircraft and gliders. oh well, i'll just have to wait until my kids grow up.

anyone live in akita city, by the way ?

karate led me to japanese which led to making some japanese friends and visiting, not so interested anymore since im not taking japanese atm (not in 2 years) but plan on continuing to do so when i am a freshman in college
