I saw this symbol ◎ in a language book written by a Japanese teacher. He uses ◯, × and ◎ to indicate correct and wrong answers. I understand ◯, × but what does ◎ mean?

I believe ◎ would normally mean excellent or perfect or best answer. 〇 would mean correct. Check the intro in the book to see if it explicitly defines the symbols. (But it may not since these are pretty commonly used across Japan).

Another thing to look out for is a triangle. △, also called "sankaku" would denote an answer that is neither strictly correct nor incorrect, but rather somewhere in between.

The double circle could be a form of "hana maru", which is sometimes used for children to be more flashy and therefore more exciting to receive than "just" a maru (circle).
