What do Japanese people think of Canadians?

Hi, My name is Brandon. I currently am looking into traveling into Japan (mainly Tokyo) because it's unique compared to Canada and the west. Now I know Japan is one of the most friendly countries in the world (And I'd love to have friends there) however I want to know what Japanese people think of Canadians. Do they prefer to keep their distance? Or are they willing to make friends with other people from Canada? And should I bring more Canadian beaver souvenirs? I know this sounds stupid but I'd like to know more about our standing with Japan.

(I apologize if I sound ignorant. I've never traveled before and I think Japan is a great start).

First of all, they'll assume you are American.
Most Japanese people unfortunately think that all Westeners are Americans.
I'm German and yet they always approach me asking me in bad English: "You America?" ....

Once you tell them where you are from and if you can speak decent Japanese there shouldn't be any problems.
The people who are open-minded and interested in other cultures will be friendly.
The ones that have a lot of prejudice probably won't.

This hasn't happened to me but I heard from a lot of other people that they couldn't find real friends in Japan, because most just wanted free English lessons or a "cool accessory" in form of an exotic foreign friend, so you might want to be careful about this.

Thank you. I've studied well about the issues of free English lessons. I'm generally a friendly laid back person. But I do know the number one rule of being a Canadian traveler; Always make a Canadian flag visible. But thank you for telling me more about this. I'll scratch out the beavers ;o.

Beaver souvenirs????

If they don't know you, Japanese will think you are American. They won't care either way. Their only perception of Canada is maple syrup, ice hockey, and that's about it. Come and enjoy.
