What country has the most number of Japanese?

Well, of course side from Japan & Hawaii (which is almost a country by itself).

I live in Vancouver and travel back and forth from here to either Tokyo, Hong Kong & Singapore.

I noticed lately the huge increase of either Japanese or Korean visitors strolling downtown. It is quite obvious that most of them are either students or have a working visa.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think here in Germany live around 30,000 Japanese, around 7000 of them in Duesseldorf alone.
2000 of the Japanese who live in Germany are students.

In 2001, there were 837,744 Japanese living abroad, among which 544,434 long-stayers and 293,310 permanent residents. The highest number by far was the USA (312,936), followed by Brazil, China, the UK, Australia, Canada and Germany.

Bossel, you were near. There are 26,400 Japanese living in Germany, about half of the UK or China.

I'd say most likely the large numbers of Japanese that emigrated to South America and helped establish communities there after WWII (or earlier ? for the large tracts of land ?). Fujimori was only overthrown a few years ago after all as President of Peru for his involvement in a bribary scandal and forced to flee to Japan.....

Japanese immigration to Brazil was part of the large Japanese Diaspora to Hawaii, Canada and the United States prior to World War II. Japanese emigration was encouraged by the government because of rural unrest caused in large measure by the heavy land taxes of the Meiji government. When the United States, Canada and Mexico curtailed Japanese immigration after 1908 because of racial and economic concerns , Brazil and to a lesser extent Peru encouraged Nikkei to migrate because of a need for rural laborers on the cotton, and sugar plantations of these nations. Figures for Japanese immigration to Brazil before WW II place the number of Japanese immigrants at about 280,000, second only to Hawaii. The ethnic Japanese population of Brazil including, Issei, Nisei, Sansei and Yonsei (first through fourth generation immigrants) is now about 1.2 million. More than 180,000 of these have sought "temporary" employment in Japan during the last decade. (emphasis added)

I remember reading in the paper about some finance minister in Mexico named Jesus Tanaka or something.

In Europe there are most japanese in England (mostly London which has 60.000 japanese ), then France (mostly Paris) and then comes Dﾃｼsseldorf on a third place.

In Mexico it was because of population basically, there was not racial concern actually, except in WWII, Japanese people were hated because they sank two Mexican oiler ships. Japanese people back to Mexico about one decade after WWII.

Well, I don't know anyone called Jasus Tanaka, but indeed, there are several people with Japanese last names.

Good links!
I tried to find the number for all Japanese in Germany but found only numbers for some federal states. Hence I had to estimate. This is pretty hard, since the numbers I found vary greatly, for Duesseldorf they ranged from 6500 to 8000. :?
