University Nomination - MEXT Scholarship

hi younggirl. I think early July this year. Did you use a courier for submitting the documents? I used DHL.

nope, i was submitting it by my self to university. because now Iam in Japan as an exchange student so i directly gave the application to my professor. Now iam waiting for the result of university recommendation, same with you, right?

Yes, but I think the meeting for university recommendation for my university is on February. I'm getting anxious too.

thank you for sharing your story iken...you're probably in, the only thing strange to me in this story is that they asked you money for consultations...

I went for University recommendations to get the scholarship, but now I'm very worried, albeit for a totally different reason. It seems that ETS has screwed me over as my official score reports have not reached the Universities I had applied to. I'm worried sick that after putting so much effort and investing so much money into this whole admission affair, I might get rejected simple because my official score report from ETS never reached the University. :(

I don't think you need to worry that much, I wouldn't say that Uni would reject you just because your ETS papers never arrived, contact your professor at the Uni and explain the situation, also I believe you have some non official web based results, right? Send that as a first proof you did the test, and of course contact ETS about your problem, and don't worry :)

I did most of what you wrote, i.e., wrote to the professors about the issue, and contacted ETS. As a measure of precaution, I had already attached the photocopy of my TOEFL iBT score card to the applications and sent it along with the packages. Let's see how it turns out. Thanks for comforting me though. I'm still hoping it will play out nicely.

Hey, FullM3tal
before applying I mailed the AO of TiTech about the same problem, I wasn't sure if the TOEFL results arrive there before the deadline so they told me to just print out the web results and they'll accept it as provisional document until my real results arrive.
The other day I mailed them and asked if the results arrived and they did and I passed the initial screening so yeah. At least with TiTech it shouldn't be a problem.

hello there..

im adlina from malaysia.
really curious to know if 154000 yen monthly (for basic spending, tuition fee exempt) is good enough for me, hubby and 3 yrs son to live in Japan for 2 yrs

thanks in advance

Hey frna.

I received a mail from Keio University's IGP Admissions Office today that they received my GRE score today and that they had already received my TOEFL score in December. That means my application for Keio University has been completed, and they said the results would be out in February. So that's one University down. Big relief for me. :)

As for TITech, they already have my provisional score report for TOEFL as I had attached the photocopy of my personal TOEFL score card to the application. Since Keio has received my scores, I'm hoping TITech will receive them soon as well. Thanks for the help. :)

Hello adlina san,
I think is enough, but really really tight. because some of my senior here, they brought family to Japan and not enough if the income only come from scholarship, you should find something for example Part time job to get more money. but if you just by your self it's definitely enough. or with 154.000 yen and bring family you have to manage really well.

hope it's helping you to answer

Hi, are you applying 2 universities?

Yeah, I am. I'm curious though. Do people usually apply to just 1 University in Japan?

Hi, as far as I know, if the academic year that you're apply is not the same for both university, then it should be okay.
for example, university recommendation for academic year 2013 and university recommendation for academic year 2012
If you're apply for the same academic year, you will be disqualified. These are what the lady from emabssy told me.

@akira0404
the rules when applying Uni recommendation and embassy recommendation are a little bit different, i am sure you can't apply more then one Uni when applying through embassy but i am not so sure about Uni recommendation...
i've heard some people applied more then one but i wouldn't dare to do that...

You can have up to three when applying through Embassy. if you manage to get a letter of acceptance from all of them, Mext will decide for you. I only had one letter of acceptance anyway, thankfully from my first preference. Also I have read that you can apply for multiple universities through University recommendation - although some Uni's state they will only recommend you if their university is the sole one you are applying for. This is what i have read, as i said i applied through the embassy and don't know much about uni recommendation.

You can apply to more than one university , however on selection , you will have to chose one university only , thats the rule , since the university recommends your name to the MEXT and later MEXT gives final confirmation (Which in 99 percent cases is accepted ), but if you have two applications coming from different universities , the MEXT will cancel your application all together.. So its good to be accepted in all universities you apply , but you will have to reject the rest and stick to one later..

Thats my personal experience , since I am now studying in japan from University Recommendation and I was selected for two universities.

Thats good , but i will suggest you to stick to TITech, .. its much better university than Keio...

I also had some problems with ETS. I took my TOEFL exam last Dec. 18 and they mailed the score reports on Jan. 9. The deadline for the application was Jan 17 and I know it won't get there by the deadline. They still considered my application despite the lack of the score report so I was quite relieved but I guess I have to check if they have received the official one. I'm guessing it takes a month the latest?

hi mozda, oh the story about the consultation fee? It's just a joke. They're just kidding :) It was a light moment during the interview and I was happy to share a few laughs with them.

Iken, you should send them online results. That's what they asked me to do, then they waited for my real results.

anyway, when do you guys are expecting the results from your Universities? and MEXT is saying yes or no in April or June?

At least a month. Usually 4-6 weeks. That's what ETS USA told me.

The Universities will communicate the application results to candidates in February (that's the case with the Universities I've applied to). No idea about MEXT approval.

Does anyone know the criteria that a University sets for recommending an applicant for MEXT scholarship? I mean, just a vague idea, coz I'm guessing there is no precise criteria for this. My GRE General Test and TOEFL iBT scores are good enough, but my bachelor's percentage is average. I dunno how that will affect my chances of getting a University recommendation.

I really don't know what is their criteria for recommending an applicant for MEXT...but I do assume that GRE and TOEFL can help a little bit, then your BA GPA can say something about you but I (just assume) those things are much less important then your research proposal, your interview with chosen Graduate school, your experiences and stuff like that...
Simply ask you advisor what he/she thinks about your chances (he/she can't give you an answer to that question but at least can give you some hint about what's important)...

I know I didn't help you with this, but the answer to these questions no one knows, only Universities...:)

hi frna, yeah i did send them the online results. I also submitted a letter from my University that the medium of instruction used in class is English (for my undergraduate program). I know it's not necessary to send it but I just thought that it would give them a better idea of my English proficiency.

Thanks FullM3taL, I'll send an email on the last week of January to check if they have received the official score.

In my case, results will be out in February if I've gotten approval from the scholarship committee of the University, then MEXT results will be out in June or first week of July.
