University Nomination - MEXT Scholarship

Wow, congratulation mate :D so happy for you. So you will start your study in September this year right? When will you start studying Japanese?

So good to hear you got it ^_^

I sent email to 8 different professor, 3 of them response. 1 decline, one said my document is very good but then remain silence, one is accepting me but I am stuck in the middle of no where now :(

Basically, I think the professor need to know how to do the recommendation first, then they can help you right? in case they have no idea what we are talking about, then bad luck for me then :(

BTW, Tsukuba U nominate you for MEXT right? and professor help you with everything? I want to hug you so muchhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Wow congratulation :D so happy to hear that you got it. when will you start your study? September this year right? And when will you start studying Japanese :D hearing you got it make me so excited

I sent out to 8 professors, only 4 response, 2 decline, 1 said my documents are very good but then keep silence, one accepted me already but then somehow, we are stuck with the process :( I think he does not know what I am talking about hix hix

Basically, we need to contact with professor and if he enthusiasm with us enough, he/she will instruct us on how we can do it right?

Oh man, I really want to give you a hug to I can take some of your success to me :D

Haha thanks!! :D

There's no instructions right now as how I will go on with this scholarship. He just informed me of the result :D We're still waiting for the official announcement where we receive a letter(?) ( I guess?) from MEXT stating we got it.

Anyway, don't worry about your process. It's honestly a bit early for University recommendation, so you can still contact as many professors as you want. Depending on the University (and professor), they usually screen applicants from August, until the end of the year, or even early next year. It really, really depends on the university and professor. Someone please correct me otherwise.

I have a question though, doesn't your country have an Embassy Recommended process for the MEXT scholarship? It's ongoing right now in our country, but the deadline is on May 26.

oh yeah, do you have a specific course in mind? Because if you read in the other forum, there are others who has specific course once they get the scholarship and enter the university. I'm not quite sure if there's a different process for that though. I think in the end it's better to ask the administration or someone from the university. :?

huhu the reason why I did not go through the Embassy Recommendation is because they would look at my GPA for screening, and as soon as they laid their eye on my 2.4 GPA, I would be kicked out of the screen right at the parking slot :)

By going over the University Recommendation, professor and MEXT would look at the experience and the Field of Study, that would be much better for me, also the Letter of Recommendation which I have some many :P

I would study in the Business management course and my research would be about supply chain management, this subject is new and not popular yet in Japan, but it will in the future :)

Just receive the response from the Admission, Keio University Admission is really nice ^_^ they are the first one response fast and very full of information. They said that I need to apply for the entrance exam on September first, if I pass and receive into Graduate School, I will be nominated under the Graduate school

However, the thing here is that, my professor told me, if I want to get nominated by him, I will have to put Keio U as the first option in the MEXT application :) so how can I apply for other University as your advice? quite worry hix hix

Good for you that Keio is responding to your emails. Regarding your professor, I think it's okay to stick with him if he's really going to assist you. I only contacted so many professors for the reason that I was rejected by one and that I haven't found a professor that will support me. When I found one who is willing to help me, I didn't contact other professors anymore. If he will fully support you, then there might not be a need to contact other professors.

I think it was discussed in some parts of the forum, but you might get disqualified if two professors nominated you through Uni recommendation. I'm not sure. Although through the embassy recommendation process, it's encouraged to find three professors to support you and then choose one at the end of the process.

I found this link by the way, it's a guideline from MEXT regarding the 2014 University Recommendation Scholarship. However, it's in Japanese. Though unreliable, i just let Google translate it :D

Hope this helps~! Try downloading the forms. Although it's not updated, you could at least see somehow some of the requirements that we've gone through. Good luck~!!!

Do you have to do entrance exam, pay the Application fee and other things before being nominated? I get response from the admission that I need to apply for the entrance exam, pay the application fee of 35k Yen which is around 350 USD, gone through 3 different screening before the graduate school accept me. And only then, I can be nominated by the Graduate school :| Even I have spent that 350 USD and gone through all screening, there might be chance I get decline from MEXT for the Scholarship >_<

Dont know if this is a normal process of only Keio University apply this one :|

Maybe it's only Keio that's like that? Did you clearly tell them that you're applying for MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation? The only things that I spent are the TOEFL, JLPT, my other certificates/records, and courier service. I wasn't asked for a fee or anything. I'm not sure how the process goes for Keio. Try asking other people here in the forum. I didn't experience that in Tsukuba U.

If you are applying to any programs in any universities, you have to go through every step of the admission process, no two ways about it. The admission procedures vary from uni to uni, e.g. the application fee for Keio (as you have previously mentioned, though I'm not sure which program you are talking about) is 35k yen while that of Tokyo Uni (UTIPE) is 10k yen and 30k yen (for this year) if you apply to GRIPS (considering your background, I highly recommend you looking at this institution: National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) | Gateway to Global Leadership, they seems to be more geared toward practitioners rather than theoreticians so a person with working experiences and practical research topics probably would fit well in such environment. What's more, they have lots of financial supports for students, besides MEXT so your chance of receiving some sorts of scholarship is definitely better there)
I would suggest you also have a look at this website:
Courses | Study in Japan(Japanese university) | Global30
to search for an appropriate course which matches your research interest. All the courses listed on this webpage belong to the Global 30 program and as a result, receive quite a lot of financial support. That means, besides MEXT, their students may also be granted scholarship from other sources such as ADB, IMF, or even from the universities themselves. I would advise you not to fret so much about getting MEXT at this stage and concentrate on finding the right program and a suitable supervisor for your research by expanding your search horizon. I mean getting MEXT is good but not getting MEXT should not be the end of the world!

So in order to be nominated by the University, I have to be their student first? If I understand correctly :P what if I applied and then fail at the MEXT nomination, then all of the screening I have done is wasted right? :(

Absolutely! Though I don't understand why you feel so down about that fact. Had you applied to countries such as US, the application process would have been even more brutal: Students have applied for more than 10 different uni (or even more) for the hope of getting into just one of them. There's a risk inherent in everything and you either take it or just forfeit right from the start.
Also, as I have mentioned before, MEXT is not the only scholarship you can get, there're plenty of financial supports out there so even if you fail MEXT, there can still be hope.

:) thank much mate, your confirmation is the last piece of the puzzle I need to make decision. As a Planner, I always take calculated risk :P so your input is the final one I need
I was confused with the process, because different U have different process. Thats why when seeing Tsukuba is different Keio so much, I am quite shocked :P
If I manage to get this, I think I will write a full instruction for people like me in the future :D
