Translated game instruction manuals

I create game content for the computer and release it world wide. A lot of people that use my things are from Japan and I have been trying to write a manual for them to hopefully understand better. If there is something you don't understand or have trouble reading or a mistranslation please tell me which part. I will then say what I mean to say in English better. However somethings in the manual are not full sentences. I have many manuals that vary a bit, here is the first one. If there is an error, please correct me in a way that uses mostly Kanji please. I have tried things like google translate and its not really good. A machine translator will never be as good as a human. This is one of my first times trying to write Japanese.

I don't mean to sound discouraging or rude, so please don't take it that way....

What have your Japanese studies consisted of so far? Has it been mostly studying kanji and little or no grammar? I can hardly make heads or tails of most of that content.

Let's start with the second line:

私の日本語好を話はさない

I'm guessing that is intended to mean "I like Japanese but I don't speak it". Unfortunately, it is just a jumbled mishmash and all I can go on is guessing from the kanji bits and the ない on the end. The grammar/syntax is so far off as to be nonsensical.

If your kanji cart has indeed gotten this far out in front of your grammar horse, then it really isn't practical to "correct" your mistakes as this isn't so much a case of mistakes with what you've learned as it is a case of just not having learned it at all yet. In other words, it isn't a case of correcting; it is a case of lessons not learned.

I know kanji are kewl and grammar is dull and boring, but there is really little point to just learning kanji and deceiving one's self that it is "learning Japanese". Grammar is the glue that holds everything together; it is the commonly agreed upon set of rules that tells everyone how all parts of a sentence are to be construed and how they relate to each other. With it you have intelligible speech. Without it you have aphasic gibberish.

Was セットネイル supposed to be "punch"? If so, that "punch" is a carpenter's tool.

I suggest you study the language first, I mean of course studying grammar is dull and ****, but like what Mike said, its the glue to everything man. Learning only them Kanji is useless if you dont know the structure of the language itself.

Ok, but mostly I need 5 parts of the manual translated corrected and everything else should be pretty easy to write for my other manuals.

Lets do this in parts. Before I posted this I did ask a Japanese person if they could read this. However it was only for a short time. She did understand a few things but had trouble with others.

These lines should be correct and understandable:

What is the best way to write "My Japanese is not good."?

For these:

新の版-For this one can I write it like this? Writing the word "Version" in Kana? 新バージョン

and the next line something like this? 今日の新バージョン

also in the kana word version should there be a シ instead of ジ?

I would still like to know how to write, "I don not speak good Japanese" in Japanese. I am trying online translators and they all give me weird and different translations and some of them I know for sure can't be right.

For the next part the person I spoke to understood the first two lines but had a bit of trouble with the next three.

At first my last two lines were like this:

But then the person I met told me to put the last part at the beginning. I don't understand this. Doesn't この usually come in the beginning of the sentence?

Where do you keep getting this はないで stuff that you drop into the middle of things? I'm guessing you are dropping it in as "not" and then putting a verb at the end because you heard they go there. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that.

この appears immediately before whatever noun or noun phrase it applies to and not necessarily at the beginning of sentences.

Your best bet would be to give up attempting to turn this stuff into sentences yourself. I haven't seen anything that indicates anything you've picked up so far has been accurate or useful for the task. There really is no substitute for sitting down and boring yourself to tears with a good textbook and drill materials. The kind of stuff you're missing is stuff that is covered in the very first few lessons of any beginning materials. With even a half-dozen hours of half-hearted study you wouldn't have made a great many of the mistakes you have made. So far this has just been a great illustration of the point I so often harp on: learning the Japanese writing system is not learning the Japanese language....and can in fact turn out to be a counterproductive frustrating waste of time and effort unless done in conjunction with learning the language.

As well as learning some basic grammar, you should look at game instruction manuals already written in Japanese. I don't know what this Mugen/Winmugen stuff is about, but presuming it is some type of software, and that some Japanese people use it, then there are probably already similar manuals in existence, written by native speakers. Find one and use it as a template.

Your last paragraph has a bad tone but I understand why. Japanese does have a very confusing written language however. Sometimes you can read other languages but have trouble writing them yourself. A lot of people have this problem I have seen. For example I CAN read things on the Playstation 3 network store in Japanese, not word by every word but can understand most of it. Do you recommend me trying to completely understand Japanese writing first than learning it as I go? Writing things by yourself always seems much harder than reading things already written.

Also I can't really learn things without people correcting me properly.

Comprehension always runs ahead of ability to produce. What I'm recommending is to learn the language....not just the characters used to write the language. Get a textbook or take a class. People here will be happy to help you with questions you may have.

Before this thread "dies" I want to know what things were at least readable. I know there are somethings that are readable because the Japanese person I met said they understood it but I want to know how well. Knowing what is readable will help me learn sentence structure more.

I am pretty sure a lot of things under the "Mode select" part are readable. I am pretty sure the 7th color part is readable. Also I think the last two lines are readable too.
