2.you say that Japan fascinates you, but then you admit to not really knowing anything about Japan, including the easy accessable stuff like pop-culture, why do you want to move there?
3.you've not only never been out of the states you've also never been out of Georgia (yikes)
4.you're twenty, and though you've been fascinated by Japan since 2, you have never studied the language, and are actually planning around moving to Japan on that basis...
5.You're a tattoo artist with a GED...?
If this is all correct, what you've said, you may be a candidate for the LEAST deserving person to even consider moving to another country, let alone Japan.

are you really that desperate to go right now, why not spend some more time and acquire some skills in the Japanese language before moving to Japan, it might be difficult to find job opportunities if you don't know the language, well, thats what I think anyway

Yeah again ill say what ive already said but i just keep saying it to let you guys on here know that im still reading and loving your feedback. and well the more you all tell me! the more i realize that its a bit harder than i originally thought to move to japan. so i will definitly be spending my lil bit of savings to go back to school. i just pulled up my old records and found out that i only need a lil under a year to graduate. However i still hold to my want to be dropped in a foreign land without knowing much of the launguage to simply understand better how it is for ppl moving to america and having to learn the hardest languange in the world as a second language.

My comment was to the nature that some people ask a question and then after a few responses never come back. Sometimes it's pointless to reply.

Sour grape would be me saying something like "Oh that country isn't worth visiting anyways...", I support anyones honest attempt at visiting Japan, I don't have much sympathy for the just out of highscool, I want to move to Japan for the rest of my life because it's the city of the future threads, sorry.

In rebuttle, does successfully living in Japan give you certain priveleges to tell people "I told you so..." ? You don't have to hold peoples hand on the forum Mike, nobody wants you to, but nobody likes to hear "I told you so..."

I came to Japan just out of high school. I had hardly been out of my home state. I was, I daresay, far more ignorant of Japan then than the OP is now. How very fortunate I am that I didn't have you deciding whether I was "deserving" of being allowed to live here or not.

I don't know where all that "certain privileges" stuff came from. Normally all that is required in order to be able to say "I told you so" is to wait for time to prove one's statements to have been correct.

I am rather envious of people who are "just out of high school" and planning to live in Japan. It is great to have grandiose dreams, but sometimes it does take a hard smack of reality on the noggin. I didn't get over to Japan until the ripe "old" age of 47. Naturally, I would have liked to have gone over earlier in my youth, but sometimes mundane things that comprise life gets in the way.

It has been said in other threads that Japan is not the "shangrila" that some people seem to think it is. This is true. If you are really serious about living in Japan, you really do need to study up on it. A short vacation would be helpful. You may find that it isn't your cup of tea after all.

For me, I've even considered retiring there. I love it there. But I have several years before I hit retirement age. My case may be different than others. So I have plenty of time to think and study things before I would make a commitment.

That changes a lot. You see, the OP specifically wants to know what it's like to go to a completely alien country with no prior knowledge. Therefore it would e counterproductive for him to do research on the issue past the point of visa requirements.

Actually, the more I think about it, it's really quite interesting what the OP wants to do here. If you actually do complete this endeavor, I think you should write a book about it. I also think (and I am serious about this) that you should look into going to Mongolia instead of Japan. I know that Mongolia is putting a lot of effort in its English education, so it should be possible to find a job, and, for purposes of the book, it might be better for the book because Mongolia strikes me as more exotic than Japan in Western eyes today.

thanks, im glad to know that someone read my original post with a lil more detail and understands my intentions in this. that is why i stated i dont know much about the culture. and i dont know but a couple words of the language. its simply b/c i havent done any reasearch on the customs or culture. and i dont plan to untill i get there. I dont want to move to japan for tourist reasons. ya know sight seeing, landmarks, bath houses, anime conventions, and stuff like that. i want that learning experience, and thx for the advice i was planning on keeping a detailed journal in my journey, and that might make it easier in the long run to possibly write a book about it. And while i appreciate the the suggestion i still stick with japan! thx anyway!

at present i'l be going to university in september to study chemistry with a year out in japan in a cupla year but im just considering my options if i don't make the grade to get into uni... does anyone have any ideas with regards to the uk side of things or someone that can nudge me in the right direction???

with regards to the yukio vs mike thing i support mike fully... he's been a great contributor to this thread and has put in his 2 cents n all... in most topics i'v seen mike as a good poster and someone that'll help when he can... then yukio comes along and just nocks the guy for trying to follow his dream... thts a really sucky thing to do... but aside frm that this isnt the place lol ^_^ so yeah advice please ppls... point me in the right dir. pleases ^_^_^

Ok, as usual im really late to reply....

I say go for it. Just be prepared for some hard times, but if thats what you really want to do, then you shouldnt let anything get in your way.
You wont be able to get a visa easily for working, but im sure 3-6 months is a nice time to come and experiment living in a foreign country.
Also if you were to come for a short time, and things are all working in your favour (or you dont care if they arent, but are still having a great time) you could always apply for a student visa and study the language more in depth. I dont think you need to leave Japan to upgrade to a student visa (help me out on this one guys...)

I had a friend, hadnt been to uni, went to Japan on a working holiday visa. Hitch hiked his way around Japan working in snowboarding and surfing shops, small restaurants etc. Didnt know the language to start with, learnt it along the way. He's a better person for it. I dont think he ever once taught english.

Just go with your dreams. Whats the worst thing that can happen? They'll send you back to your home country. At least you would have gotten as much as you could out of the situation.

Make sure you have enough money to survive three months! Japan is NOT cheap. Go in summer time, so that if you have to sleep on the side of the road, its not going to be so cold. You could always go to Okinawa . I have a few friends who live there, and they say the housing is quite cheap. You could get a job picking sugar cane or something.
My friends there (japanese) have tattoos, but dont seem to get ostrasised as much as perhaps if they were to have 'salaryman' jobs in other parts of Japan.

Good luck with it! You'll have a great time, and I know there are people who have been living in Japan for years who still cant speak japanese. I can see that you arent going to be as ignorant as that, but if they can do it and still live there, then there is no reason why you cant go there without first knowing some of the lanugage. Everything goes in baby steps.

As someone who has been sent back, I'd suggest planning over just "experimental travel", or whatever the original poster is going on about.

There's nothing wrong with fastidious planning when it comes to Japan. Showing up 100% green and trying to find a place to live (good luck on that one), a place to work (nope), and to survive seems like asking for trouble... I feel like I didn't do enough by just confering with the immigration department more on my return trip... Getting denied entry is the worst feeling in the world, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

thanks as ususal a ton. sorry i havent replied latley ive been a bit caught up in some personal business, it always suks when a friend gets put in the hospital b/c of an idiotic other friend and his inability to drive as well as he thinks he can. well anyway thx for the advice again and ive officialy started back on track to going to school, as to make the merge into japan a lil more smoothly. i take my a+ certification test in a few and if i pass i have a job secured that'll grant me proper funds to go back to school and finish my network security degree. well anywho. after all that yall have said i agree that my original post was a we-bit miss guided and a lil stuborn considering i had planned to move even without proper funding. and i really dont want to get into japan get deported and then denied all future access. so ill take the baby steps as previous suggessted. nice and slow.

Good thinkin about slowing down with the plan, cuz the other way wouldn't take you very far. Get that degree, and gather money because the money will have to keep you alive at start. Japan = very expensive, I mean nothing is cheap.
I got a couple of tattoes and I didn't notice peope gevin me looks about it, but the damn thing is covered pretty good so I think that was for the best anyway. Oh and yes it's true about gyms and public baths not letting you in if you got ink on ya.
Get to know the language a bit better before you go, it's a real drag if you don't. I hated the fact that I couldn't participate in any kind of conversation. It was getting to me really hard. FOr that I bought books that could help me with basics. You get the feeling that you want to learn it over night because you don't wanna spend one more day being oblivious in that invironment.
I also have a problem of not having a college degree so concequently I couldn't get a working visa. However I will go back there in the future and I'm planning of opening a business there or just get some partners to build a business. That is my way of getting my dream. Me and you have the same goal but we will take different paths to achieve it. Good luck to ya and may everything turn out for the best!

But just another option you can take, why not go to Japan with a student visa (go to a language school) like what I'm currently doing. You just need some money up front (and ofcourse you can work part time with the permission from immigration and the school when you're in Japan).

yo guys! quite a fuss on this thread well since this is my first post then "Hi everyone nice to meetcha!". i'm a guy from malaysia which like dyzie has a dream to stay in japan. well for me not stay there for the rest of my life but rather stay there for bout 5 years?7years?so so...i;ve graduated from univ with mechanical engineering degree n am looking hard for scholarship for my master program. Just like rio lee i've been thinkin bout goin to language school 1st but since the fee is too much for me maybe i just had to scratch off that idea hahaha...now i'm applying for ASJA scholarship and AYFscholarship n see where it will take me...if i can't get any of em well maybe i work here for few years n come to Japan when i've got the money...its been my dream also to study/live in oversea countries and i am not gonna give up just yet! hell maybe i just learn the language (get JPLT lvl 2 or 3) then tried to work there eh? haha but i'm a man of reality and i do know the risk involved in taking such drastic steps in life like living in a foreign country with absolutely no knowledge bout it whatsoever but still your life is your life to live so live it good so that you'll never turn back n regret eh?

Infiniume, if you're looking to just live in a foreign country, why not Singapore? ^_~ Heck of a lot easier to get in as a Malaysian, and get there within a year.

Where did you graduate from? I'm going there as an English instructor late August (if my Certificate of Eligibility is processed by early August). I have a BA (honors) from an American university, though, and 2 years of working experience in a foreign bank; the HR department of the English school I applied to told me they loved the 2 years of experience, and we went straight into discussions about teaching business English to companies.

Just goes to show what a year or two of working experience adds to your resume, doesn't it? ^_^
