Do they ever get huge turnouts of protesters in Japan over any topics?
It's certainly progress in the sense that Japan at last has a female leader. The Japanese media, to their credit, also haven't made a huge thing out of her being female, indicating that the idea of female leaders has already been normalised. And if the tax-free allowance substantially increases, a policy being discussed, that may encourage more women to work (and also help people on low incomes - often single mothers).This was pretty cool when I first heard about this! What a super cool thing, and I was blown away that she's the first ever in the country's history. I hope she does a good job!

This is what always baffles me in Japan - the strong initial approval rates for 'new' (but basically recycled) cabinets. A new government in the UK may have a 'honeymoon' period where the approval ratings are slightly higher. In Japan, it's always a difference of 20-30 points.65% approval rating according to Mainichi, 68% according to Asahi.

That is also true - I'd struggle to name more that half a dozen cabinet members of the current UK government despite having an interest in politics. Even so, this cabinet makeup has received more attention than most because of Takaichi's unkept promise of changes and because of the inclusion of scandal-hit ministers.Probably most responders have no idea who is or was in the cabinet.

Ugh, see, that was my takeaway, too… I'm sure they don't want to demonize foreigners.So by their logic, we, the foreign residents, should start feeling guilty for the anxiety and unease our presence causes the Japanese people.
