well, he makes a point out of saying his name over and over... in interviews and at live gigs, he says it over and over; that is, his NEW name; (not Miyabi) so he tries to say it like M-I-Y-A-VVV-I, but it still comes out like Miya (b) i... haha, funny, he can't even pronounce his name XDDDDD *tackles him and hugs him to death*

I've not seen any Japanese people who have trouble pronouncing r's. I see a lot who have trouble pronouncing l's. Considering that 'ra' 'ri' 'ru' 're' ro' is what makes up some of their words, why would they have trouble pronouncing it?
I think Lost in Translation was rather inaccurate, especially with that scene.
well... in romanji it's alwasy written as an 'r'.... but their 'r's are rolled together with an 'l' so... they're effectivly the same letter...
it;s pretty much the some thing with 'b's and 'v's.... 'v's don't really exsist in Japanese... and everything that's close is a 'b'

Ummm... have you ever heard a Japanese person try to say English? They say Engrish. Or some of my favorite ones my friend Kayo says "rearize" and "schoor". I love her accent.
I guess to someone whose heard "L" sound before :? ...perhaps because natural speed of native speaking Japanese is so fast. Lots of sounds get slurred and become silent or just dropped off. But I assure you there is no such thing as "L" in Japanese.
The letter l doesn't exist. Most japanese people, and some other asians as well can't hear the difference between r and l, so they just mix them. To them it's the same.
I met this japanese exchange student in norway, and she couldn't understand something I told her because she thought I said lomme(pocket in norwegian), when I really said romme(room).
So strange, l and r arn't alike at all...

well... isn't it because they don't say 'r' like we do... more like a russian 'r' where it kinda sounds like an 'l'?
that's how i was taught to pronouce it at least... to role the 'r' and 'l' sounds together.....
