Teaching english in japan, what are my chances

Its not all fun and games... I worked so many hours once that I made double my salary compared to if I were to work normal hours and normal days, from sheer overtime in a single year. Gotta admit though.. no life but.. on the other hand... TONS of fun if you are working on a fun game you actually enjoy... wow so much fun...

I used to be headed where you were actually. But then after hearing all the horror stories, and realizing the way companies could treat employees and what they worked on...

Screw that I'm going into teaching instead.

Isn't there a way for you to finish college? Considering the number of loans out there and scholarships you could find... There is always a way to make it work. Really. You just have to find it.

hmm...you might go study part time...and get your degree...if you just take the time and effort for it...don't let nebody DE-motivate you with their bull...you need a degree..that's true, but you can get it if you want...and if your lucky you won't need a 4 year degree...

Think of it this way. Would you want to be 30 with a degree making more money, or without a degree making less and much more limited.

That is what someone told me when I was getting frustrated on the time it was taking me to finish mine (which I am still working on).

Depends. I hate the attitude "you have a degree, you must be better". Depending on your age and the task at hand experience is more often a better thing to have on your side. I'm not continuing my degree after this year, its been a waste of my time and money.

Ok. Lets get some things straight.

Teaching English in a private school (ie. AEON, NOVA etc)
Requirements: Native English Speaker

Working in Japan
Requirements: 4 year college degree or equivelent.

Doesnt matter WHAT degree to get a visa. The schools only care about the degree because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands it for a visa, and hiring someone who has no working visa is illegal and will get the company (and the worker) into much strife (fines, banned from entering the country for 5 years etc).

In Australia you can get a job as a part time English teacher @ NOVA with no degree requirements. It's not the ideal pay but you could probably get a job there and moonlight ALOT on the side. I'm not sure if you can do this from America/Canada, but you could always try.

PS. I would really reccomend just to get your degree at any university, 3 year courses (you can do them here, 4 year is honours) will suffice too.

"^^, I am getting my bachelor degree in mechanical engineering in 1 year ^^. My univeristy is pretty good in my state; it is Texas A&M unviersity......will that qualify me to be a teacher in Japan?"said stupid little Mackie ^^

English isn't the only language in demand. Nova, for example, offers many languages other than English at some of its schools.

That would make you OVERQUALIFIED to work with NOVA/JET/GEOS, but as everyone said, you could have a B.A in eating cheese and NOVA would still accept you.

Psy-dood: You know what you need to do. Stop whining and get to it!
Alternatively, if you are not going to get what you need to teach there, then stop whining and don't do it!
You can still try going to Japan to learn Japanese and get a degree at a university over there while working on the side, so it may be an option, since getting work visas are much easier than before, and getting student visas are possible....
Stop sitting on your hands and get to it!

Wait. To work in Japan at all (under standard circumstances), you have to have a college degree? Am I understanding that correctly?

That's for getting a work visa. If you come on a student visa, you can work on the side. (There is a restriction to how much work you can do, but the authorities are too busy to check on you.... )

Also, I think there are exceptions, such as work visa for artists, chefs and others with specialized skills not requiring university education.

You have to request permission to do work on the side, its not a built in thing.
