Beef bowl chain Sukiya has issued an apology after revealing that a rat was discovered in a bowl of miso soup served at one of its locations in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, in January. According to the company's statement, the rat—a "foreign object" in its official announcement—was found in miso soup served to a customer at the Sukiya Tottori Minamiyoshikata store on 21 January.

It is believed the rat entered the miso soup while employees were preparing ingredients for other dishes. An employee failed to inspect each serving before being brought to the table. The customer immediately noticed the contamination and alerted staff. Following the incident, the store closed for two days while the company carried out hygiene inspections and reinforced procedures instructing employees to thoroughly check food before serving. Sukiya stated that it is improving its management system to prevent similar incidents. However, the company faced backlash on social media over the weekend, as many criticized Sukiya's two-month delay in acknowledging the incident.

After another pest was found in a meal served to a customer at a Sukiya location, the gyudon beef bowl chain announced on Saturday that it would temporarily shut down most of its outlets nationwide.



According to a statement on Sukiya's website, a customer discovered a cockroach in an unspecified dish at the Akishima Ekiminami store in Tokyo on Friday. The customer then contacted the company to report the incident. In response, the store voluntarily ceased operations at around 5 p.m. that same day, and an investigation into the cause is underway. A professional pest control company is scheduled to conduct extermination on 31 March.
