Studying and working in Japan without MEXT Scholarship?

Hey Ankit,

Congrats on getting the PhD scholarship! I am joining the computational fluids lab. How did you go with getting accommodation when you first arrived? Did you get into the dormitories or did you find your own place from the start?

Thanks Andrew, there are two international housing here in sapporo from Hokudai.. When I applied , I did not get it .. So i got myself an apartment.. Usually the price for apartment is a little expensive but the difference is not much.. Also the single rooms in dormitory are very small.. They have restrictions into bringing friends after 10 pm etc. Thats why I prefer apartments over dorm.. But if you get it , its good ... take it ...

When will you be arriving in sapporo??

I am going to be there for October semester assuming my nomination gets approved by MEXT. I guess I will be arriving some time in September whenever their flights are booked.
I am a bit worried about expenses, seeing you posted today that the amount is being reduced and they are reducing the number of scholarships? The admin office for e3 said there were still 14 nominations so I hope it doesn't get cut back by MEXT and I still get my place.
Is it hard to find an apartment? I have been checking some apartments on the web, but its hard to know. I dont really want to spend more than 30,000 yen a month I guess, I would rather live in a small place as long as it is not too far from campus.
I definitely have to buy some warm clothes for winter!

Dont worry they wont cut it this year , and hokkaido university is very reputed one , we have fixed quota of number of scholarships for e3..
as far expenses, it totally depends on life style , everything here is expensive , so students usually cook themselves , if you can do that ,you will save a lot , for apartment it starts from 20000 onwards.. utilities expenses are around 15000 monthly .. Do not worry too much about that now .. Its easy to find apartment in sapporo..
