Does anyone know anything about squatters rights in Japan or alternatively point me to a resource where I can find some information?

I'm confused - do you mean staying in your apartment after the lease has run out or are evicted, or just finding an abandoned building and setting up a home?

Knowing Japan Law...

the only squatter's rights are probably over the hole-in-the-floor toilets!! If your not a Made-In-Japan citizen,
you don't get far in the right's department!

Actually squatters have very good rights in japan. My situation is; my japanese wife and her family left the house that we all live in together. I'm the sole occuppant but not the owner. what are my rights?

you should prolly take this up with a lawyer, not a web discussion board, neh?

With lawyers so rare in Japan, the net is as good place to start as any. The problem is finding the information on-line and in English...

Common sense would say though that if your name is not on the title or lease, and if your wife divorces you and removes your name from the family register, you have few legs to stand on. The police tend not to get involved in family disputes, though that is changing. But once you are out of the family, if your ex-family raises a big enough stink, they can probably get you booted out right quick.
