I'm a US student and I want to apply to Sophia University's Faculty of Liberal Arts department next year after I graduate high school. Is it difficult for foreigners to get accepted there? I know that they only accept 130 students each year, so is it next to impossible to get in? Do they pay a lot of attention to SAT scores? Also, how important is the essay? Any help would be great.

Sophia FLA accepts only 130 students simply because it is a small school specialized in college-level education in English. In the past, there used to be information on the Web regarding the minimum requirements for admission into FLA. It seems to have disappeared, probably suggesting that the screening process depends on variables, such as the number of foreign nationals, Japanese nationals with overseas education, Japanese nationals without overseas education but with exceptional abilities, etc., applying for admission in that year or semester.
Anyway, SAT is a MUST. I believe you need a reasonably respectable score for that.
JFYI, the school's website says you need a GPA of 4.0 or higher if you wish to skip the regular admission process and get admitted by recommendation. For further information, you should be inquiring directly with the school.

I am from Germany, thus English isn't my first language. I scored about 1650 (with 700 in math) on the new SAT and 109 on the TOEFL (which you probably won't have to take). I wrote pretty decent essay I guess and the letter of recommendation sounded good.
I think they are trying to be desperately international, thus you should have a good chance if you are not Japanese.
Besides that, I thin FLA is a decent school, but if you can get in any good US-colleges, that is money better invested.

I went to Sophia University for a campus visit the other summer. I kinda took a peak at a class (I really wasn't supposed to be in the class but a friend goes there so I "ninja -ed in") and the teacher was very laidback. The class however, is HUGE. I think there were atleast 40 students in that class.
Now regarding the entrance with the AO system, I heard the freshman entrance exam is hard too. But if you have a specialty in something (i.e. proof of very high mathmatical knowledge, or any other criteria) you'll probably be good. After-all AO-entrance looks for "special talents" and you need to show that "special talent" off.
Another useful information you may want to hear...
The average SAT scores that people have gotten in the University is RUMORED to be around 1600. So your score may be borderline but good(especially if you haven't lived in an English speaking country). And also I have heard RUMORS that the average TOEFL scores were anywhere from 80-90 so if you have a TOEFL over a 100, that should cover-up the English-fluency (that is in my opinion).

Hey guys, I'm applying for Sophia as well (Waseda is my first choice though) so I'd benefit from any tips you could give me on enrollment after you've gone through it all.
I have a question on finance. A year of study at Waseda and Sophia costs pretty much the same (the first year, later the prices go up); I was wondering about the document of secured funding that both universities ask for (the one where you have to prove you're able to pay):
-Do you have to prove that you can pay for the current year only or the entire study program (4 years)?

I'm pretty sure that admission is based on the type of pre-college education you received, rather than your nationality.
If you went through the American education system, the admission process is the same for you as for American nationals. Still, they'd expect you to pass TOEFL with flying colors (which is expected of Japanese returnee students) and to submit reasonable SAT scores.
At any rate, you should inquire with Sophia FLA admissions for further details.

Yes, you have to. If you're not a senior yet, you will have time to improve your TOEFL score.
FLA stands for Faculty of Liberal Arts, the only department at Sophia that teaches college-level courses in English.

Whew, its been a while since i've been here!
Well I got in as a Japanese returnee, not as a foreigner (I was born in Japan but was raised in Europe and the USA). I'm not sure if you are allowed to apply as a foreigner so you should definitely directly ask Sophia's Admissions Office just to be safe.
I must say this though, I really doubt that it makes a difference whether if you apply as a foreigner or a Japanese returnee (regarding your TOEFL and SAT scores...)
I do not know how "bad" your toefl and SAT scores were but you have time to improve, just as the admin said.
