Getting back on track, I just returned home from Japan yesterday and I can testify under oath that I actually saw A LOT OF SEXY Japanese women. If you go there, and keep your beady eyes open, you will see plenty of sexy Japanese women without much effort.

When I read the first post (WAYYY before this got so off-topic), I thought 'the reason you don't see so many sexy (or un-sexy, for that matter) Japanese actresses in the West is because there aren't enough that speak passable English such that they can appear in a Hollywood film.'
I mean, isn't this why Zhang Ziyi played the Japanese geisha in that terrible movie?

And "terrible movie"? Well, damn, I liked it. But all the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese students I tutor in English were all freaking out about it. I said it wasn't any different than foreign actors (usually English and Australians) playing Americans in Hollywood films. Aside from the fact that some of them overdo the "cowboy" accent, most Americans couldn't care less. ... Then again, we are a nation of immigrants anyway. We have Italians playing Jews, and Jews playing Irish, and Irish playing Italians in our movies.

And in case you hadn't picked up on it, I'm implying that beauty and sexiness are two vastly different things, and the former is far superior to the latter, in my opinion.

I was reading from the original post and realy it did get me thinking. Now I concider myself to be fairly familiar with cinema and films in general and when I say this keep in mind that I am talking about Mainstream Hollywood, not foreign films or advertisements and the sort.
What I want to know is why there are so very few japanese actresses (and actors for that matter) taking part in all these movies. This is in no way to say that they can't or aren't suited to, but merely to ask why they aren't. For example, why is Memoirs of a Geisha played by the same people from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Correct me if I am wrong, but judging by their names, they sounded Chinese not Japanese.
Now if you pay close attention to the media today--including cinema, television, etc.--you would notice that people with unfamiliar faces have been staring in major roles alot lately. Unlike ten years ago it's not uncommon for a movie to have a cast of charactors completely unfamiliar to the viewer.
Most people seem to have taken this thread as an attack on japanese women, but with the idea in mind that all nationalities have individuals of exceptional tallent and visage, I would like to know why there are fewer that have gone mainstream. I mean if people no body has heard of from england can become rock stars overnight(almost literaly) and actresses from canada can rise to stardom right out of highschool by simply visiting new york, and if Jackie Chan and Will Smith can play a role as a cowboy(j/k) then why can't some one who is actualy Japanese play a Japanese charactor in a movie about Japan?
Again, I'm not attacking anyone by saying that they can't (I stress this because it's a sensitive issue many people attack in a shoot first ask questions later) I am simply saying that on the screen and when those credits role I'd like to see some names that at least look Japanese.
It's like when you go to Benihana's and you sit down to eat and the chef walks up to you and his name is Alberto Gonzolez. Sure the food is great and I have nothing against a mexican person or people working at an asian restourant, but when the whole kitchen is talking in spanish it does kinda effect the atmosphere. Given that there were two restourants side by side, both of them were identical except that one was all caucasion and the other was mexican, if you were going there to eat mexican food you would go to the one that employed mexicans. Of course most of the presumptions here are a little different. Where I live most people would rather go to the little taco shops because they not only taste better then el toritos and taco bell but they give larger portions.
Either way though, in film it has a completly different meaning. Most films try to provide a sence of realism and so as time goes on they improve on who and what they portray to make it more believable. So by taking all of this into consideration just try and tell me that it doesn't make sence to have a japanese actor play a part in a movie about a japanese person in japan. If you wanted to even try to fake it the closest nationality would be korean; however, it is my belief that many film makers use chinese people due to the richness of the film culture there(as well as the acknoledgement of it in mainstream media) and on the premise that most people wont know the difference. Of course if time has taught us one thing it is that time and technoledgy will increase the consumers expectations when it comes to what they believe to be realistic. With that said, I believe that we will see more asian cultures partisipating in mainstream cinema in the near future.
