Almost vomited. Atrocious. I saw a video of a whale being straight out mechanically speared, flailing around as the water became red, reeled in, and the men on board holding large signs with "We are only taking tissue samples".

As a person who works in a science field, I almost want to say that's complete bull$hit. Yeah, we kind of eviscerate rats, monkeys, dogs, cats, horses. I think it's about time the Japanese stopped whaling.

Its awful to watch. What part of research requires the killing of hundreds of whales a year? I would love to see anyone who takes part in the killing of whales harpooned and drug through the water.

Assuming you are living in Nebraska (a state of livestock industry), have you ever entered Slaughter House nearby your house ? 😊

Now, lets start by answering your question. Yes, I have been to and know a few people who work there.
Do you know the manner in which the livestock are killed? Do you think it compares to what is being done to these whales? :?
Now with staying on track, there are some research facilities around here that work with livestock. The animals they use are humanely euthanized. They are not shot in some manner where they are left to suffer for some time.
They also do not use these animals under the false pretense that they are doing research, when in fact they would just kill the animal and package it for wholesale. If these facilities did such a thing in the US, people would go to jail.
Its one thing to kill a whale and truly use it for research. But if you watch any documentary on what the Japanese are doing, they don't conduct a whole lot of research before processing the whale and ship it back to Japan for sale. In fact, they discard most of what would be used for research, because it has no $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ value.
Please, don't compare the highly regulated livestock industry of the US with what is going on in the Japanese whaling industry. There is no comparison. 🙂

So you are telling "We are right, but you are wrong" arn't you? Or "We have a right to enjoy veal as we beautifully slaughter calf, but we don't allow you to enjoy the meat which we don't eat." 😊

In the meanwhile, the US "highly regulated" livestock industry .... use sick cow to produce meat products. Did you eat ?

Astroboy, I'd like to say I am a vegetarian. I have never seen meat processed, nor have I eaten it. The fact that the whaling was obviously done in false pretenses of tissue samples was the point of this topic. If people are doing it for traditional reasons it is one thing, and I am not too sure about that right now.

Japanese whalers are doing whaling under an international agreement - IWC - because today's World is running on international agreement. Or some people are believing that their thoughts are superior to the international agreement because they are self-believed "ethically-superior" ??? 😊

By the way, as far as I know, vegetarian is one of the way of dietary life. Not a right to condemn other's dietary life.

Yes, it a dietary choice (well, it is my parent's religious choice). I have not said anything about eating of whale meat, because the topic was about false pretenses of tissue samples. I do think that the IWC agreement is outdated.

Congratulations on your 1000th post.

Thanks! Always agree to disagree.

Then again, I'm also concerned about overfishing, which I think is kind of a chain reaction, isn't it?

Nope. I am saying that in the US, we do things humanely. And when that is not the case, there are organizations that uphold the law against those who do not follow them. You can go to prison these days in the US for mistreating an animal.
Veal, not a fan of it. But do you not get that some cattle are raised for their beef? Others for their milk? All livestock has a purpose. But again, thats not the point here. Its how they are killed and under what pretense. Try to stay on track please.
As far as Mad Cow. Yes, there were cattle infected with it in the US. But no where near the amount as in other countries such as the UK, and even Japan. Rest assured that once discovered, it was handled.
So let me get this straight, you see no problem with harpooning whales, shooting them numerous times in the head, and then dragging them next to your boat til they die? And its no big deal that there is little, if any research being done during this whole process? Crazy.

Endangered species must be protected, but the decision must be done on scientific analysis. Not emotion.
But they are not being scientifically analysed, they are using that as an excuse for a food market. How does slaughtering a species protect it? I'm sure after the years of hunting that the Japanese have done now in the name of "Scientifc reaserch" they should have enough data to actually protect the species instead of tryuing to hunt the animals into extinction.

But they are not being scientifically analysed, they are using that as an excuse for a food market.

Your statement sounds unreasonable. Please be more specific about "are not being scentifically analysed".
Or just your hunch ?

Why is it unreasonable? The whales are really being killed to fill a demand in a market for whale meat, not for scientific research, and you know damn well it is. The science is just an excuse to get meat on a table at some restaurant in Tokyo. Science does not go onto wholesale slaughter of a species and then feed the animals to people after its research.

I think .... you understanding is based on mis-interpretation of IWC agreement.

THE LEGALITIES OF WHALING
Objection - A country formally objects to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium, declaring itself exempt. Example: Norway
Scientific - A nation issues unilateral 'scientific permits'; any IWC member can do this. Example: Japan
Aboriginal - IWC grants permits to indigenous groups for subsistence food. Example: Alaskan Inupiat
BBC News - Japan anger over Sea Shepherd 'attack' on whaling ship

IF Japan object IWC-led moratorium, Japan do the same whaling as Norway and Iceland.
Meaning Japan does not need to submit research report.

From Japanese standpoint, research is not top priority, but in order to let non-whaling countries know that certain species are not endangered, Japan is conducting scientific research and reporting, as well as selling the whale meat after reporting. If Japan does not intend to submit the research report, Japanese whalers will Just do Whaling.

But you are telling that research is fake. I think you better revamp your understanding.

Commercial Whaling was banned by IWC a long time ago BECAUSE Whales were endangered based on sicentific research, wasn't it? "Endangered or NOT" wasn't it?

Or emotionally endangered ? Then .... it is a totally different discussion. Namely... either respect dietary life of other people or NOT.

Consuming whale meat is seen by many as barbaric and unnecessary. But the Japanese say eating the meat is part of their culture.

Commercial whaling has been banned since the mid 1980s, but Japan justifies its annual hunt in the name of science.
So how is whaling viewed by the Japanese?
Roland Buerk reports. BBC News - Why whale meat is popular in Japan

It is obvious that BBC reporter "Roland Buerk" is making false reports and spreading propaganda.

"Seen by many as barbaric and unnecessary" must be corrected to "Seen by Anglo-American, while they are barbaristic on human being in Iraq & Afghanistan".
"Justifies its annual hunt in the name of science" must be corrected by "Agreed by IWC (Why Japan needs to justify?)".

I believe that BBC is a old-fashioned propaganda media, flaming uneducated people and trying to control others. Sounds like NAZI.

You know what bothers me he most? That if you're anything other than a human, your life is worth almost nothing. It's barbaric and needs to stop. That said, in history, if you we're anything other than white, your life was also worth almost nothing. Some things can, and do change for the better.

You do not conduct population estimates on animals by killing them. Tell me how that would work scientifically? If the population goes extinct while you're hunting them then you know that they were endangered, that's ridiculous.

At least own up to the fact that there is absolutely no science involved. If there was I think we would have seen them tag at least one whale and study it, or have seen them following whales and NOT hunting them to study behavioral patterns or studying communication or migration habits. What exactly has Japan contributed to the world of scientific whale research that doesn't involve how best to serve them on a bun?

In short, this comment is a summary of certain anti-whaling groups' insistence of Anglo-American countries. They insist "There must be scientific research without killing whales".

But they never conducted such "scientific research". Only shouting. 😊

In short, they object anything about the Japanese whaling. In order to attain their aim, they produce new theory one after another.

"IF it's scientifc research or whaling with research report, we will allow Japan to do". --->
"Thanks, we do scientific research whaling" ---> "We changed our mind. Japan should frind out scientific whaling without hunting."

I think we are here now.

Westerners have this need to lecture others about what's moral or ethical. Never mind that they set no such examples themselves; it's just part of their Christian-based culture to proselytize and lecture others.

As a fellow meat-hunter, I fully support Japanese whalers. I wish they'd turn their harpoons on those eco-terrorist pirates that keep interfering with them. Japan should just drop scientific research pretense and say "F--K YOU" to the whale-worshippers.

Has anyone ever seen Inupiat or Yupik Eskimos taking whales? This is right in the US, folks. Ever look at all that blood on the slaughterhouse floor?

Btw, blood in water always makes for spectacular filming. Next time you cut your finger, stick it in a bowel of water; you'll turn the whole bowl red in a couple minutes.
