Restaurant Question

When entering a Japanese restaurant, after being bombarded with irasshae!! (I know I probably spelled that wrong), is there a proper response? Or just say nothing and smile?

I usually just say nothing, kind of nod my head in an informal bow and just take my seat. Quite appropriate. :gohan:

I remember when we went in a restaurant we just smiled and sat down (together with my friend who is Japanese).I think the Japanese are used to the "after a while annoying" irasshaimasen by now so they don't even care/notice

It always feels like they say it more for themselves and their peace of mind than for the customers. My buddy always tried to start the "irrashaimase chant" in large stores by shouting it at random. He just couldn't get the accent right.

People usually smile without saying anything, but it is not inappropriate to say 'hello'(Konnichiwa or Konbanwa, depending on when you go to a restaurant.)

I don't know about saying "irasshai mashita", you might get a strange reaction unless you say that as a joke because you know the people who work at the restaurant very well...

That sounds like what I do at work. In reply to "otsukaresan" I usually say "Tsukaremashita"....which, oddly enough, takes people aback.

I reply "Gochisousama deshita" or "Arigatou" at the cash desk.

..and you can say or point with your fingers how many seats you need (how many persons there are) when you enter a restaurant.

At my work we said otsukaresamadesu always when meeting a co-worker at a hallway etc, and otsukaresamadeshita after finishing the day. To everyone. I miss it quite a lot ^^
