Hello,

I would like to request help translating the kanji on the tang from a Japanese sword. I included a picture below.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for your help with my requests. I greatly appreciate it.

Matt

鐵櫻丸 祝喜?(most likely a variant of 寿)
唐津市有志一同

Tetsuō-maru, Celebration of 77th birthday
From everyone concerned in Karatsu city.

鐵櫻丸 Tetsuō-maru would be the name of the sword. Maru is sometimes used for swords, not only for ships or boys. For example, the Japanese name of Frodo's sword Sting is つらぬき丸 Turanuki-maru in The Lord of the Rings.

Hello Toritoribe,

Thank you very much for the help with this translation, I greatly appreciate it. That is a very interesting mei. So the name of the sword is 'Tetsuo' and 'Maru' indicates it as a name, is that accurate?

Thanks again!

The last vowel is the long one "ō/ou". 鐵櫻 literally means iron-cherry, and maru is a suffix to show it's the name of a sword here.

Thank you very much for the extra information, I greatly appreciate your taking the time to share it.
