Rep Points: love it, hate it, or whatever!

the grey points are by someone new who hasnt the necessary reps or points to rep someone else... so their reps dont count... be it negative or positive... i enjoy the rep system... i like to see those shining green squares... is funny though if u guys notice that most of the people, inlcuding me, who said that they enjoy the rep system do seem to have fairly high rep points

I think the grey boxes are by people who haven't check 'approve' or 'disapprove' as I have received a few from people who said good things, but I didn't get a green box.

Overall I think the rep points are a good system as you can immediately see what others think about anothers persons posts by their rep points regardless of the number of posts. I tend to take what they say more seriously based on their rep points.

Whether I agree or disagree I will more than likely give positive rep if I feel that the person added something to the conversation and stimulated debate or thought.

Personally, I feel that Mr Nagashima has been short changed though, as I think he adds so much to the forum even though he cannot speak English. He is always so helpful and does alot of research when people have questions and posts his research with good links in all the forums and under all subjects. I commend and respect him for that and rep him when he gives good, useful information. Even though he uses a translation website, I can see through his sentences and understand what he is trying to convey. Thank you Nagashima-san! I have learned much from you.

Another forum I go to just upgraded their site hack. It came with a reputation system.

The admin got rid of it in a week. Over there (which can be found through my sig) member appreciation is earned based on substancial arguments and distinguishing behavior, in anything from contest awards to modship.

Your rep is your writing. So I'm flattered by many of the points and good wishings I've recieved from members, but really, it's all good. I don't need it.

Personally I've never given neg rep and would think very hard before doing so, because I actually don't think it's very helpful to the poster and it's better to continue to discuss in forum or pm if you feel their posts to be offensive or inappropriate. But if I did give neg rep I hope I'd have the guts to write my name!

I'm guessing this is consistent with your positive-reinforcement-only practice that you mentioned in another thread, eh?

I do give out bad reps, but to people whose post I find offensive or dangerously ignorant (ie discriminatory, war-crime-deniers, belligerents, etc), not with those with whom I don't agree (actually, a confession: when starting out on the forum, I did bad rep those whom I disagreed with, but that's changed). I would argue that that's not a bad thing, because if someone's been offensive, they should know, and realize why, and see that it's not just some passing offense that can brushed off. I don't think I'm abusing the system, because I feel justified, and even obligated, in giving feedback to posts in particular where they are warranted.

Rep systems, given the way they are, are meant to be a two-way system. How the two ways are spliced has been argued much in the past, but I feel that offensive posts by and far need to be pinpointed and given specific focus. Discussions and PMs don't work as well because the offender could just as easily ignore them.

Finally, I think that it is precisely because I find something offensive that I can sign it. If someone says something discriminatory, I want my name to be known to them, and that I am not afraid to call them out. Recent events in the locality around my school has made me realize that cowards are the ones who speak from behind a mask (unless someone has a good reason for doing so, like Revenant), so I would gladly write my name in bold if something someone said was completely in poor taste. So don't worry about signing your name, it's all part of the thrill!

After I started practicing not signing reps, I was getting signed negative reps from people who I had given multiple good reps to, and getting good reps from people who I had given bad rep to. I want people to judge my posts without bias. Yeah!

That's a view and mindset that I can definitely respect. Heck, I'd be disappointed if I didn't get negative reps for a while! I want to work hard to get my good reps. I admit that I'm not as flexible as you- I can be really bull-headed when arguing- but at the same time, I don't want positive bias to make me into a big softy!

A quick look at the FAQ brought up this:

What do the green, red, and grey dots mean?
A green dot indicates that you were given positive reputation. A red dot indicates that you were given negative reputation. A grey dot indicates that the user gave you reputation, but it counted neither positive or negative.

Why would reputation not count positive or negative?
When a new user first starts out, their reputation does not count. There are a few factors that determine when their reputation should start counting. Some of those factors are the number of posts, the number of days they have been registered, and the number of reputation points that have been given to them.

When my reputation begins to count, do my grey dots then count?
No, once a reputation value has been given (negative, positive, or neutral) the point values will never change retroactively. If you give a zero-point reputation, it will remain a zero-point reputation no matter how high or low your reputation point values become.

I like the reputation system, too. Not so much the line of green dots, but it's nice to get some feedback on what you're posting!

I've only recently started learning about this system since i started reading this thread, i never really noticed the reputation point system before, how do you give out reputation points to somone by the way?
...Surely the system isn't that nesarsary though...? Im sure people would be able to communicate and live in harmony with each other without such a system, its existance at a glance does seem to have created much controversy looking back at past threads on this subject, perhaps it is not worth the negative effects and controversy it creates every now and then? This is the first time i have encountered a reputation system on a forum before(although i belong to very few forums anyways) they have all been great and working in much harmony without the use of reputation points :34: :105: :36: .

You click on the scales down near the flag on the post you wish to rep. Another page will appear asking if approve/disapprove the post. Click on whichever one you need and leave a comment in the box on why you like/dislike the post. The comment is optional, but it will give the person a reason why you gave rep. From what I gather on most positive rep a person will leave a good comment and thier username. On negative rep some will not leave a comment or their name.
