Reference of このような

I can't completely understand the reference of このような事 in the following sentence. Does 志乃 saying that reading 灼 as あらたか in this island is something like using 灼 as 『しるし』 and 明 as 『あきらか』?

双厳：「だったら、もう一つ。"しるし"とはなんだ？ 村人たちは噴火をそう言ってた」
志乃：「"灼し"です」
双厳：「"しゃく"？ たしか"あらたか"とは読むが」
志乃：「万葉集にもありますでしょう。『雲だにも 灼くし發たば 慰めて 見つつもあらむ 直に逢うまでに』これは"灼"を"しる"とよんでます」
志乃：「確かに、"灼"は火の燃える明るさをいう文字で、あきらかという字に近いようです。」

Does it not possibly refer to the 海底火山? (As opposed to the other 噴火 which they called しるし - if the context is that there's more than one). I think it's something they're looking at, not something actually mentioned in the bit of text you've given.

lit. "on this island, the thing/case that you'd read 灼 as あらたか, would it not be something like this?"

Where are the speakers while having this conversation, and have the terms あらたか・しるし (with or without 灼 ) been brought up before?

The term しるし been brougth up by the villagers of this island. The MC is in the house of landlord, and he asked her about the meaning of しるし. And the MC only guessed that the villagers are talking about 噴火, because he seen 海底火山 after he heard them talking about the しるし. So in the context there is only one 噴火.

It seems to me that that's a typo of この島で『灼』をしるしとよむのは、このような事ではないでしょうか, since あらたか is a possible reading of 灼, not specific in "this island".

sorry for hijacking the topic from another person but
I too, thought of this Toritori, being しるし the "strange" reading, cited in the old japanese poem as well, it only made sense to mee, to repeat it here as its the topic of the conversation.

would it make sense if "そのようなことじゃないか" in this case referred to the previous line, as an older 使い分け , as in the provided poem?

If that's a typo, このような事 refers to the previous lines; from 万葉集にもありますでしょう。 to 使い分けていた事が多いです, and she said そのために"灼し"が海底火山を示す言葉として残ったのでしょう in the last line. This interpretation makes sense to me because they were talking about 灼し through the entire conversation.
