Hot 91 petition
Petition Online - Petition Online has been retired

everyone should sign this.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On January 21st, 2005, an offensive song/skit containing openly derogatory and racist overtones reached millions of listeners in New York City when it was broadcast on Hot 97's "Miss Jones in the Morning" radio show. While the radio show has a history of recording and playing such spoofs on a regular basis, the infamous "Tsunami Song" mocks not only the victims of the unfortunate recent natural disaster in Southeast Asia, but also all members of the Asian race in general with the racial slurs "chink" and "Chinamen."

Choice lyrics of the 'Tsunami Song' included:
- "All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, 'swim you b*tches swim'"
- "So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami, you better run or kiss your *** away, go find your mommy, I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head, and now the children will be sold to child slavery..."

whoever wrote, sang and played that song, should be punished

dissing people of another race, mocking victims of a tragedy, is not a part of the freedom of speech, it is an act of racism

I love people of all races and cultures, and I don't like racists

as an Asian Canadian, I feel that we can not let these things goes unnoticed by the mainstream society, everytime when these things happen, they somehow goes under the radar like it never happened
everytime these racist crap happen in the media, when someone is dissing people of minorities, the mainstream media don't really care, and then maybe someone who is involved gives an half-*** apology, the whole incident will be forgottened again, and then some idiots commits the same act again, it keeps happening over and over and over again

I have signed the petition, and I demand those involved to be punished,
there are responsibilities for your own speech and act

Hmm, I'm not 100% positive, but the song seems to be made by East Asians. Therefore it's probably not racist motivated.
Anyway, even if it weren't East Asians who wrote or sang it, I don't see much of a problem. It's bad taste, but racism?

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry. Maybe I was a bit quick, perhaps the file is only hosted by East Asians in order to provide evidence (although this seems a bit unlikely to me).

Yeah, this song was done in poor taste, and should not be tolerated. This is absolutely racist, and their whole morning staff deserves to be terminated immediately. Although it may seem a little funny since it is not you, it's not appropriate to promote racism and hate while making light of a horrific tragedy which took place. Just because the hot 97 morning crew are minorities themselves there in NY, does not make it right to use racial slurs and belittle other races. Why don't you go and make a song about the tragedy of 9-11 in NYC, and see how many people laugh...oh what that involves us now, so this creates a problem? There are hundreds of thousands of people dead due to the unfortunate tsunami, and that is more than evil to mock such a catastrophic event. Man, if they would have said "Honky" on the radio, there jobs would have been dissolved faster than you could say Huh???..... I'm with Jin on this one, these racist scum bags need to be tossed out into the trash ASAP.

the main host of the show , Miss Jones
accused the another host , Miss Info - who is an Asian American - to be thinking that she is superior because she is Asian

Miss Info was trying to stay away from this whole thing, she said she could not laugh about this tragedy,
Miss Jones showed her true colour and dissed Miss Info right in front of millions of listeners

the male DJ..whatever his name is, threatened that he is going to 'shoot some Asians'

Racism isn't the question here, the bottom line is that song should NEVER have seen the light of day. How insensitive can those jackasses be? Everyone involved with that song should be immediately fired and the FCC come down on the station like a ton of bricks with the sort of heavy-handed fines Howard Stern (even he wouldn't do something that incredibly vile) gets slapped with. Plain and simple!

I heard about this a few days ago. I don't know who wrote it, but this song is just plain wrong.

This is just scandalous, :auch:
I'll send them an anthrax letter and write a song about their agony :box:

Lyrics:

There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your country away

And all at once, you could hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, "Swim you ******* swim."

[Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your *** away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery

[Chorus]

I never enjoyed listening to those arrogant basterd Hot 97 DJs anyways.

Abolutely reprehensible! Words fail to describe how disgusted I am after reading those lyrics. You have to wonder what goes through the alleged minds of vermin like that when they write garbage like that. Scumbags shouldn't be allowed to work in radio EVER again!

I may be a bit shallow by saying this.
The piece performed seems to involve more empathy than sarcasm or ridicule.
Of course every time I heard "chink" or "chinamen" it pieced thrugh the heart.
But the magnitude of the tragedy is simply too big to allow for any sarcasm.

The lyric writer, the singers, and the 97 DJ's staff should be human, too.
They should also know what it means to die, to be maimed, to lose one's loved ones.
It is impossible that anybody in their right mind could ever mean to throw racial slurs at a time like this.

The song is about people suffering.
Not about racism, or being superior.
The words were extreme, and painful to hear.
Maybe they wanted to express their hearts about how wrong the whole tragedy was.

Mocked God, mocked nature, mocked racism and racists, for sure.
But I would not want to believe that they mocked the victims.
Immature, yes. But in their own childish way, they protested the cruelty of the tsunami.
So let's not turn this into a racial issue.
I simply think it goes far, far beyond that.
Let's not have our agenda come before the victims', at least in this case.

So nature strikes a country and people make fun of the miserable people there?
**** that.

Not racist ? So it's ok to call Asians "Chinks" and "Chinamen" ?
I'm sorry but if that aint racist then you're a frickin *****.

Apparently this isnt the only case of people making fun of the tsunami incident, a guy in australia made a song, and a british sports commentator made a "joke" (he got his *** fired tho).

If that's the case, and I seriously doubt they really gave a damn one way or another, then they NEVER should've created that loathsome song at all. Sorry, lexico, but there's just NO excuse at all for what those vermin did.

That's bull----! If you ask me, all they were trying to do was express cheap laughs with that stunt. I can't see it for anything else but a vulgar radio stunt that never should've seen the light of day. Period!

Thanks Gaki, and FlashJeff!
I accept your criticism.
Because you blipped out the stongest part of your statements, I got the message, and at the same time avoided being flashed.
And that is what the station people should have done.

Those racial slurs were definitely uncalled for, and should have been blipped out as well.
I think the station should be fined and brought to justice for that grave error.

The words as such may be perceived (or intended) as racial slurs. But why shouldn't East Asians (if the authors were EA) not be allowed to use these, just like blacks seem to be allowed to use the word Nigger among themselves.
What's more, there is (& should be, IMO) a certain freedom of the arts. It may be bad taste, but not necessarily racism.

Another question is whether the radio show host is racist, or not. But that question is not directly related to the lyrics (which seem quite crappy, anyway, but I haven'd heard it sung) of the song.

no, the author, the people who sang and aired this song were black americans

note:
i am not racist towards the black americans, in fact many of my idols are black, there are just some bad apples on every tree.

If they were Chinese that's a different story, if any other east Asian race it's still racist. I personally do not use the word Chink even though i am Chinese, i feel it is in bad taste to refer to yourself in a deregoratory manner.

If a German radio personality started to sing songs about sending Jews to the gas chambers on German radio there would be a problem would there not ?

It often suprises me how quick people are to jump when comments are directed towards people of Jewish faith or african heritage, but when it's about the Asian people it's "ok".

I see. The link to the song didn't really look like being of a black crew.

AFAIK, chink refers to all of the mongoloid race. At least that's what the Racial Slur Database says. M-W supports your opinion, though. :?

Well, Germany is a special case, since we have some rather strict laws here.

Not me, anyway. I'm all for free speech, even if it's insulting. Probably I would jump in to say what a stupid opinion that is, but I wouldn't call for any punishment or something like that.

Cut and paste from dictionary.com:

Chink Audio pronunciation of "chink" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (chngk)
n. Offensive Slang

Used as a disparaging term for person of Chinese birth or descent.

They should have to face the consequences of their actions just like any other job, racism is quite a serious issue.
These people are heard on a public radio station by thousands of people per day, they should be responsible for the way in which they speak about things.

If this situation had been slided under the carpet, in future other people would think it's ok to make fun of Asians and think they can get away with it.

I already conceded that M-W supports your position. You want to start a quote competition? OK, here's what the RSDB has to say:
Chink
Asians
In reference to their eyes. Dictionary definition: A narrow opening or slit. Technically should only refer to Chinese, but used for all Asians.

They should have to face the consequences of their actions just like any other job, racism is quite a serious issue.
If I understand that correctly, the song writer already faced the consequences: he lost his job. Although I think, that goes a bit far as a reaction on some stupid song.

If this situation had been slided under the carpet, in future other people would think it's ok to make fun of Asians and think they can get away with it.
It is OK to make fun of Asians. You can make fun of everyone: mongrel, caucasoid, mongoloid or negroid. Question is how far you should go. But IMO that's more a matter of taste, it shouldn't be a matter of law.

It doesn't have to be brushed under the carpet, you can protest it. & the best way to do so is playing the same field, as Jin did.
