Question Regarding Japanese Major

Hello all,

I am about to finish up my H.S. career and have made up my mind to major in Japanese when I attend university. Now I have always loved Japanese culture and I love trying to learn languages so I have taken some Japanese H.S. courses in prep for university.

Anyways I just figured some backround info would be helpful but the reason I made this thread is because I have the option to pick a co-major to go with my Japanese major. They suggest education, computer science, or engineering. What would be best to increase my chances of getting a job in Japan after uni?

Majored in Japanese and Computer Information Systems at Indiana University Bloomington.

I managed to get a job with a big US company in Tokyo immediately after graduation through the Boston Career Forum. I ended up staying in Japan for 7 years! I'm in China now learning Chinese, as part of my graduate program that I am doing back in the States.

If you like IT, it should work out. A business major would go far as well, such as Finance.

Whatever you do, be SURE to study abroad in Japan for one year during your time in college.

It depends on what kind of job you'd like to do too.

Business fields are quite valuable because Japanese trade a lot with foreign countries (they have to import many products because they live on an island that can't give them all what they need). Many companies would much appreciate someone who can effectively trade with foreign companies and be fluent in Japanese. You know most Japanese cannot communicate effectively in English.

Computer engineering is interesting too, but I think the competition will be fiercer. Many Japanese people can do that, so it will be harder to find a job. Take advantage of your differences to make yourself more valuable on the Japanese job market.
