Post LoA. What's next Housing and Admission to the University?

Hi everyone,

For those of you out there who already recieved the scholoarship, what happens after you locate a professor willing to be your supervisor?

1. Are you responsible for applying directly to the school? Did you have to take entrance exams?

2. How about housing? Did you apply though your University once you had been selected or did you try using JASSO?

I know everyone has a different story, but I would like to hear from you guys.

Are you talking about the Monbukagakusho scholarship?

I didn't have to do anything after I got my LoA. I just sent my LoA to the embassy and waited for confirmation to see whether I got the scholarship.

Once it was confirmed that I did get it, all I did was email the professor to thank him and inform him.

No applying for admission, nothing about accommodation.

If you're a Monbukagakusho scholar, the university or JASSO arranges the accommodation for you. At least for the 1st year.

If you really want to be sure, email the International Student Office of your university or your professor. Your professor should be able to give yoy details like when he thinks its suitable for you to take the entrance examination, what requirements you have to fulfill and what you should prepare before coming to Japan.

I should have been more specific. Yes I am talking about the MEXT post grad scholarship. The professor I talked to was under the impression that I would have to take the entrance exams and sit for another interview. Has anyone heard of this situation before?

I'm not really sure what is going on in your case but in my case, I will have to sit for my university entrance exam to qualify as a Masters student. The entrance exam also includes an interview.

But all procedures regarding the entrance exam will only be done when I'm in Japan.

Maybe that is what your professor is talking about?

im applying directly to the school. For my case, the prof excluded me from taking entrance examination, I direct enter as post-grad studen.

For housing, once the prof confirm that I got d scholarship, he submit d application & applied for me (the nearest to the lab).

anyway, tats my story.

Some Universities ask you to take the entrance exam, that is what my professor told me . he said that the if you managed to pass the embassy interview then the entrance exam is not really hard for you.

Some other supervisors even said that you will be asked about your proposal and the lessons you study during your research period ( 6 months to 1 year while studying Japanese ).
I don't think the entrance exam would be a hard issue to consider.

Hi I wanted to bump this topic again. Of the people out there, what is your housing situation? and the people who will be going next year, do any of you know what your situation will be? Are you required to pay? Does the school/scholarship cover it?

The uni where I work doesn't even have an entrance exam for grad students. There is an admissions procedure involving a review of the application information. If your scholarship requires Japanese lessons beforehand, you will have to take them where applicable. My school doesn't have such requirements, but students on some of those scholarships have to take 3-6 months of those lessons elsewhere in Japan before they can start studying at the uni.

Case by case. Find out what the application process is for the uni where you want to go. Should be simple enough. Same thing with housing. (At my school there is a dorm for international students, but they are allowed to stay in it only their first year.)

Hi, can anyone studying at Todai, Tokyo tell me what kind of expense that you people have regarding housing? With a decent probablity I think I might be attending Todai at Hongo campus, hence I am asking for some information.

1. what kind of expense that you people, ie those attending todai, have regarding housing?
2. Is it possible to stay at Komaba campus dorms but attend classes etc at Hongo campus?
3. If you are living outside campus, what kind of traveling times you guys have in general?
4. During the first few days, where do you stay? I mean till you find yourself a place to live.
5. Are there any dorms in Hongo Campus that allow Foreign students?
