Society Over 22,000 solitary deaths in Japan unnoticed for 8 days

According to the latest NPA report, released on April 14, the number of all solitary deaths was up 921 from 2024 and accounted for nearly 40 percent of all 204,562 deaths handled by police in 2025. By age group: 57 of the solitary deaths were people in their teens or younger; 753 were in their 20s; 975 were in their 30s; 2,382 were in their 40s; 7,568 were in their 50s; 14,183 were in their 60s; 24,416 were in their 70s; and 26,445 were in their 80s or older. The working-age population of between 15 and 64 accounted for 17,860, or more than 20 percent, of the solitary deaths. The bodies of 28,398 people who died alone at home were found on the same day of the estimated time of death or the following day, while 15,865 were discovered in two or three days, and 10,456 in four through seven days. Those aged 65 or older accounted for more than 70 percent of the 22,222 isolated deaths that went unnoticed for eight days or longer. The bodies were not found in 7,148 cases for one month or longer, and one year or longer for 208.
