In Tuesday's debate with Sen. John Edwards, Vice President Dick Cheney answered a charge about his role at Halliburton by referencing a website, fact-check.com. The site, an advertising holder for encyclopedia companies, was overwhelmed with visits before forwarding all traffic to George Soros.com -- which bears the headline, "Why we must not re-elect President Bush." The vice president meant Factcheck.org. Hear NPR's Robert Siegel and NPR's Melissa Block.

That might teach him a lesson to check his facts before he opens his mouth again... or maybe not....

he always looks so darned serious....he needs to lighten up and live a little....

True, he didn't refer anybody to FactCheck.org. However where do you think he was intending to refer them to when he referred them to FactCheck.com ?

CHENEY: Well, the reason they keep mentioning Halliburton is because they're trying to throw up a smokescreen. They know the charges are false.

They know that if you go, for example, to factcheck.com [sic], an independent Web site sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, you can get the specific details with respect to Halliburton.

It's an effort that they've made repeatedly to try to confuse the voters and to raise questions, but there's no substance to the charges.

In a statement released after the debate, factcheck.org said, "In fact, we did post an article pointing out that Cheney hasn't profited personally while in office from Halliburton's Iraq contracts, as falsely implied by a Kerry TV ad. But Edwards was talking about Cheney's responsibility for earlier Halliburton troubles. And in fact, Edwards was mostly right."

It could work for him though--part of DubYa's appeal its that he's not smarter than you--and therefore easier to identify with. Same deal with Clinton's womanizing, people feel better about a president who makes them look good by comparison--it the "You're an OK guy" kind of thing, as opposed to being some distant genious that frightens all the little monkeys.
