Ooops, I posted in other topics before I posted here...

Well anyways, I'm a Chinese-Canadian who lives in Vancouver, BC but currently studying Mandarin and tutoring English in Chengdu, China.

Why I'm interested in Japan: Its a combination of factors. Perhaps it was the fact that my grandparents hated Japan so much that I wanted to see what it was all about. Or it was the sushi restaurants that popped up all over Vancouver and introduced me to the wonders of raw fish. (YUM! Seriously though I do like Japanese cuisine a lot.) Or it was the Samurai epics that my dad rented. Or it was the J-music that my friends were playing around with and I got into it myself. So it's not just one factor. (No I'm not an Anime fan)

My opinion on Japan. 711-1867 AD: Ok, island nation east of us, (China) adapts some of China's ideas and changes them to fit Japanese conditions, as well as creating their own indigenous traditions. ok, fair enough.

1894-1945; GRRR!!!! HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE!!!!!

1945-present: Ok, pretty cool country, lots of cool innovations, people seem nice, food looks good, music is catchy.... but the Yasukuni Shrine and a few other issues remain. Nonetheless I am still facsinated by this country, I don't know why.

(PS Could you get any "manlier" smilies? They're kinda too "Kawaii" for my tastes.)

Sorry if some of my posts seem inflamed so far (I'm only 6 or 7 posts into my time here.) , its just that the war issue sometimes makes me mad. But I try to move on and I don't hate modern Japan or Japanese people. (I do have Nikkei friends in Canada) Hope to make friends here.

Yes whats done is done, I don't advocate revenge, but the Japanese Gov't should take a good look at the facts and tell its people. And stop worshipping war criminals. And stop stereotyping all of us Chinese as unclean barbarian criminals who only go to Japan to commit crimes. And apologize Directly to China, mentioning all the horrible things they had done.

If I really hated Japan I wouldn't even be on this site, right? And if I really hated Japan I wouldn't plan on going there next summer right? (I would post the URL but I can't yet) If I really bashed Japan I wouldn't eat sushi, wouldn't listen to J-rock and wouldn't play Shogun : Total War, right?

I don't hate Japanese people or culture. (Except that bit about Emperor Worship and militarism, that part I don't like) I have Nikkei friends and acquaintances from Japan as well.

PS: Those smilies seem kinda... "Pokemon-ish" to me, don't know why.

But yeah, I know you don't dislike Japan, because otherwise you wouldn't be here indeed. With government, I think they should just gather around a table with a good pint (beer) and start to get along...it might work ^_^

But yeah, it's wrong for people to stereotype and I don't like it either. I guess the world will never change...in fact it only seems to get worse each day.

As if to emphasize my point I'm using a picture of a pissed off Chinese man from Ancient Times (Sou Sou for you Japanese, Cao Cao for Chinese, his Kanji name is 曹操). I'm not usually an angry person, but some things that some Japanese people say about China make me angry, sometimes.

On a lighter note...
You like Ayumi Hawasaki a lot? I've heard she's like the Britney Spears of Japan, only not as bad. (I hope!) I tend to gravitate towards J-rock and J-punk, but that's just me. I heard the songs playing Guitar Freaks and Drummania in the arcades and just got hooked.

I couldn't compare he rwith any western artist really (except if it's about popularity), she has her own unique apearance, voice and her style just rocks my socks. As for styles of music, she has several styles, going from classic to rock. Maybe you should pay avisit to the Ayumi topic once in the music section on this forum

Most of the people here as far as I can tell are mainly into J-rock though, but I think you should give her music a try sometimes, I'm sure you won't regret some of her songs like Dearest, Voyage, Duty, Rainy Day...

Hello, CBC Guy, welcome to the forums.

I know quite a few CBC's who live in Vancouver; I personally am ABC myself though I live in Hong Kong ordinarily.

Why are you tutoring English in Chengdu though? I would've thought most people would prefer to tutor in metropolitan areas like Beijing or Shanghai. Anyhow, the food there in Chengdu must be pretty spicy...

Yes the food is quite spicy, but there's actually a good selection of non-Sichuan restaurants where I live. (Don't worry, good Sichuan eateries abound) I'm slowly getting used to all the peppers and spices, but yeah its pretty strong.

Why Chengdu? Actually its a pretty long story.... I'll save it for another thread.

So are you more Hong Kong Chinese or more American, culturally speaking? I speak Cantonese and Mandarin fluently but I think culturally I'm more Canadian.

I speak both Cantonese and Mandarin fluently too. I would say I'm both HK and American culturally, but leaning much more to the Hong Kong Chinese side. It's a bit like mix-and-match for me; what I like and find positive of either culture tends to be what I adopt.

So I suppose you're into Cao Cao then? I'm more into Zhuge Liang though, haha.
