My name in Nikki Miyamoto. I am of European decent but Japanese in the heart and soul. Since my childhood, I was exposed to the Japanese culture. My best friend's mother is from Okinawa and is like a second mother to me. The culture and practices of Japan have always felt natural to me and I see myself as Culturally Japanese.
Six years ago I met my husband. His father and family was sent to the American camps during WWII, and like many of my husbands generation, him and his siblings have lost their Japanese Culture. I have found that this is very common for the children of people that experienced having everything taken from them because of the fear in America during the war. After the war, couples neglected they're heritage and taught their children to be "all American". When I met my husband, he knew nothing of his heritage. I took it upon myself to educate him. His parents were surprised on how much I know and welcomed me into their family with open arms. My mother-in-law is more than delighted that I am bringing back her culture to all of her children and grandchildren.
I now have my own child and am making sure she knows her Japanese ways. :-)
