Obtaining a passport from the USA to Japan

I've never traveled internationally before and know nothing about it. That said, I quickly need to obtain a passport because I'm applying to attend school in Japan. How should I get started on this? I'd appreciate any help.

U.S. Passports

since you seem to be under a time crunch -

once you get all the required documents together (birth certificate (or other), present proof of identity, passport photos, the cash), locate "one of the 7,000 offices" where you can apply. If you go with the expidited service, it will take about 2 weeks and 150 bucks (60 extra for the quick turn around).

Any questions you may have can be answered by checking out the above site. As far as State websites go, it is pretty clear (try applying for a green card some time and you will know what I mean...;-)). I know you are in a rush, but make sure you read everything carefully so you don't waste time if they say you did something wrong - State does not fudge on its requirments.

That fee is for the government. Your local gov will most definitely be applying a fee as well. If you dont need in within the next two months - dont bother with expedited service.

most places don't take cash so make sure to get a money order or check for good measure. Not sure about CC.

One thing you should do after you get your passport: make a good photocopy of it and when you travel, keep the copy in a safe place but separate from where you keep your passport. In case you lose your passport, the photocopy will be a big help when you try to get it replaced, etc.
