need help

Where did you get it?

I think it's 天平 (tenpyou). It's an ancient name of an era. It was in the 8th century. Does that make sense?

Libra: 天秤座(Tenbin-za)
a balance/scale: 天秤(tenbin)

As hirashin-san explained, the kanji in the picture is 天平(Tenpyou/tenpei).
The second character 平 is different from Libra(a balance)'s 秤.
 
thnk you again. so it doesn't mean libra?

my friend told me that it means libra .he said the 1st sign means air and the second he said was like balance/scale

Right. It does not mean neither Libra nor a balance/scale.
The first character 天 in the picture you posted means "heaven/sky", and the second one 平 means "flat/calm/peace". However, 天平(Tenpyou) as the compound word generally means the name of an era in Japan, as hirashin-san explained.

Please refer to the picture below. The left one is 天平(Tenpyou), and the right one is 天秤(tenbin; balance/scale/Libra). You can see the difference.
 
i see. to your opinion does my tattoo seems quite fixable from the left picture to the right ur showing?
 
Although the balance of the character would be upset, as it has already been drawn as it it were 平 on its own, by adding the nogihen (the left part of the character), the character would technically be corrected.
 
ok thank you all for your opinions . i will get it fixed most likely to tenbin-za . it could possibly come out better than only adding the left part of the character
 
OR you could do the sensible thing and have the 大 turned into Tazmanian Devil and the 平 into Tweety Bird.
 
so is that pic that Toritoribe shows mean libra in chinese and japanese?
 
The right one in the picture I posted above generally means "a balance/scale" in Japanese.
"Libra; Tenbin-za" is commonly described by the three characters like this.

I don't know about Chinese.

I think balance is a nice thing to have written on yourself(sound weird ), changing the kanji will make it look a bit weird. stick vith this.
 
ok does nebody know chinese and tell me if it means libra (picture i first posted) ive been told by chinese ppl that it does mean libra. but i need to be sure

In Chinese, Tian1 ping3 does mean "scales" (as in a balance) -- but Libra should be Tian1 ping2 zuo4.
Take a look at chineseculture.about.com/library/symbol/blcc_libra.htm

I'm a shui3 ping2 zuo4 myself.

thnk you for your thoughts. i got different answers from ppl i talked to :S this is soo frustrating lol. a few chinese ppl i talked to that in chinese the one on the left is basically means the same as the one on the right.
 
Are they really the same? They're obviously different.
It's sort of like saying "there" and "their" are the same because they're pronounced the same.

This thread is one of the reasons I always advise people NOT to get tattoos in a language they clearly do not speak, read, or understand.

well i put trust on the people working at the tattoo parlor.. it was in their binder along with other kanji tattoos . i shouldve researched first... well im gonna get it fixed thnk you for your help everyone.

I have the same opinion as AJBryant, you should visit Hanzi Smatter 一知半解 before having something engraved into your body which is very hard to eraze...
And I really hope the tatoo parlors you trust are not using something like this:

Anyone who are familiar with Japanese/Chinese would see immediately these sheets are full of mistakes.
