Kanji is one element of the Japanese writing system. Hiragana is another. Many small, common words such as "and" are written in hiragana. These words do not necessarily have kanji equivalents.
Sometimes I wish the Chinese had invented anime and manga and whatever other exotic pop culture crap Western teenyboppers find so incredibly fascinating.
