Need a word or phrase translated?

Yeah, it could just be a buddy who's learning Japanese trying to give him a hard time or something. I suppose it is a bit strange, but maybe not outside of the realm of something you might find on 2ch.

Hey all.
I'm writing a letter back to my Japanese penpal in both Japanese and English, and there are a few words/phrases I can't seem to find. If someone could help fix the mistakes or tell me the words I'm missing, it'd be really appreciated!

-so; so that; in order to & both

The sentence is:

So I'm going to try to write this letter in both Japanese and English so I can practice my Japanese and in case you don't understand the english, you can look at the Japanese.
この手紙が日本語だり英語で書いてみるよう、俺の日本語留学できて、英語のは分からなかったら、日本語の見られるね。

Those are the words I found of 'so' and 'both', and I doubt they are correct so... yeah. I don't know if the sentence is correct either, but you don't really need to correct that.

-"would be going". I don't know if japanese has "would" or not, so is there a special thing i need to do? or just leave it regular. The sentence is:

But I don't know where I would be going. (if i went)

-to guess. like how would u do that like "i guess (that) i will go" or something like that? i found "shigi suru" so would it be "~to shigi suru". i also foudn u can sue "darou". Which should i use?

-step-dad

-basically

-"that's (really) it". like when telling about something , for example my family in this letter, then you like "well.... thats it!"

-"as soon as possible"

-"since then"

-"how about"... like the sentenc eis:

How about I tell you where I have lived?
俺はどこに住んでることがあったか[名前]に言ったら？

I dunno if the sentence is anywhere near being right. soo ... >_>

Help reading ドラえもん

I purchased a bilingual version of doraemon at narita airport the other day and I'm starting to read it. Please help me with a few things:

「アハハハ！！ばかばかしいや。ぼくは夢を見ていたんだ。」
Is "ya" used as the Kansai version of "da"?

［ドラえもんに話はきいたろ。］ translated as "I think Doraemon told you."
What does "kiitaro" mean? What is this sentence, literally translated?

I wouldn't take my word for it but....

I would guess you were right about the 'ya' thing. I searched it in an online dictionary, and the only one that really made sense was that... But i honestly don't know.

And the 'kiitaro" could be a shortening of "kiita darou"
So i would think the translation could be "he/she/you(etc) probably heard the story from Doraemon"

But I really don't know, It'd probably be better to wait from someone else ^^; But I just wanted to say what I thought 8D :emoji_flushed:

Thanks.!! is the "demo" after japanese and english supposed to be the "both.... and...."?

And I didn't mean it like that ^^;;
But she likes speaking in English, and she likes practicing. That's why I wrote it in both.

Maybe I just worded it wrong XD

p.s. i just realized i mixed up "to study abroad" with to "to study"

Not in this case. You can tell because it occurs where da never does.* It adds sort of a light feeling to a sentence, or a carefree attitude. So it's kind of like "hahahaha, that was silly (of me)."

*This is excluding the 田舎言葉 as it was described on the Wikipedia notes page for the entry 日本語, which they considered to be of the おら行くだ！ variety.

Like Tomii515 said, it's the same in meaning as きいただろう.

You mean it should be 'to mo' instead of 'de mo"?

Why don't you add something like this near the end : この２言葉の中から、どちらかを選んでください。

That way, you're not setting up the Japanese as naturally more understandable than English. heh.

Darou is fine.

Are you positive this is really what you want to say, even in English ?

The ones below either need more context or a good dictionary will do.

I just basically said that ive lived in New York and Pennsylvania and im moving to Virginia o.o

And plus, it's like snail-mail (mail through mailbox...?), so she'd have my address anyway....

Oh, that's good. As long as she has your email too.

Don't ask 言ったら？unless you want her to tell you whether you ought to tell her or not...or something like that. ^^ Anyway, it will be understand as "should I?"

Haha yeah. We talk to MSN too. And I suggested snail-0mail since i do that with a lot of penpals i make.

and alright! using the "~ta ra dou desu ka" or w/e it is would be like suggesting to her to do someting, or in this case, suggesting that i do something, and asking her to see if i should? right? o.o if that made sence XD haha

i need to catch up on my studies. im rusty -0-

In conversation, the short vowel (きいた)だろ/(きいた)ろ tends to be used in "asking to the person" situation.

話はきいた(だ)ろ？(the indirect interrogative)
You heard it, didn't you?

話をきいた(だ)ろ！(断定/詰問)
You must have heard it!/I know you heard it!

On the other hand, the long vowel だろう/ろう tends to be used in "guess" situation. (While the "proper" description だろう/ろう can also be used in "asking" situation, the short vowel だろ/ろ is hardly used in "guess" situation, just in my opinion.)

ドラえもんに話はきいたろ。

Probably this sentence is the indirect interrogative one.

「きいたろ」という形は、話し相手に問いかけてるか、同意を求めてるか、問い詰めてるような場合にしか使わない気がしますね。実際の会話ならイントネーションの違いでどういう意味かよりはっきり判断できるんですけどね。
