I realize that. But to me it looked like the sentence ended with a verb in the -te form. I didn't even think of kondo being 今度, so I figured there was some verb kondoru, kondotsu, or kondou. This is a good example of romaji being evil.

You need to know what the kanji is. For example you could use WWWJIC multiple-radical kanji look up or you could use the handwriting input of the IME.

Once you have the kanji in electronic form then you can paste it into dictionaries or online 'translators'.

Keep in mind that he'd have to know some things about stroke order to use the IME handwriting recognition function. The WWJIC kanji lookup function looks like a decent choice for a beginner, though.

Was, lachen? Das ist ja wohl die Höhe, wir sind ja schließlich nicht zum Vergnügen hier! :emoji_grinning:

Dein Nickname (jooji) liest sich für mich wie die japanische "Übersetzung" von "George", war das beabsichtigt? Die IME-Funktion von Windows ist schon ziemlich praktisch, weil Du damit locker Japanisch tippen kannst.

Falls Du Windows 2000 und aufwärts benutzt, geh mal zur Systemsteureung, dann zu "Regions- und Sprachoptionen", dann zu "Sprachen" und schließlich zu "Erweitert" und füge Japanisch zur Sprachleiste hinzu. Mit der Windows-Sprachleiste kannst Du dann jederzeit auf japanische Tastaturbelegung umschalten.

Falls Du nicht Windows 2000 und aufwärts benutzt, mußt Du die IME-Funktion separat installieren, glaube ich.

Das kanji auf Deinem Bild (侍) bedeutet "Samurai". Das Radikal, unter dem Du nachschlagen musst, ist 人 (Mensch). Hier sieht es aus wie イ, was immer passiert wenn das "Mensch"-Radikal links steht. Das rechte Radikal (寺) bedeutet "Tempel".

Ja, mein Nickname soll Georg oder englisch George heißen, da war ich bisher nicht so ganz sicher, aber nun hast Du es ja bestätigt. Dankeschön.
Um auf die IME-Funktion von Windows zu sprechen zu kommen, die habe ich vermutlich zumindest teilweise eingeschaltet.
Anders könnte ich doch sicher nicht eigene Ordner in Japanischer Sprache umbenennen und darstellen. Ich nutze übrigens WinXP Professional.
Die Tastaturumstellung werde ich wohl in naher Zukunft auch noch begreifen, zur Zeit stelle ich irgend etwas auf Japanisch um,
zu meinem erstaunen jedoch nicht die Tastatur, mit ihr schreibt es sich (in Word) weiter, wie gewohnt.
Als nächstes möchte ich noch das Wort "Start" aus dem Starbutton entfernen und 開始 einfügen. Allerdings werde ich mit derlei Manipulationen noch warten, bis sich das Servicepack II für mein Betriebsystem als sicher darstellt und nicht noch weitere Fragen aufwirft.

Deine Interpretation meines Desktopscreen Symbols verstehe ich nicht. Heißt es nun Samurai im Tempel ?
Aber das liegt möglicherweise daran, das ich absolut nichts, dieser sehr interessanten Sprache verstehe, zumindest was das schreiben und lesen betrifft.

Nur ein Beispiel:
Um mich hier im Japan Forum einzuloggen suche ich mein letztes Posting, klicke hier auf meinen Nick,
nun werde ich freundlicherweise zu einem Fenster geleitet in dem sich glücklicherweise schon mein User Name befindet,
hier brauche ich nur noch mein Passwort einzugeben, absolute beginner eben.
Sicher eine abenteuerliche Art, aber man muss sich zu helfen wissen :

Das kanji bedeutet "Samurai", es setzt sich aus den Radikalen "Mensch" und "Tempel" zusammen.

Um richtig Japanisch zu tippen, mußt Du die IME-Funktion zusﾃ､tzlich auf "Hiragana" (Silbenalphabet, das überwiegend für Grammatik benutzt wird) oder "Katakana" (Silbenalphabet, das überwiegend für Fremdwörter benutzt wird.) umstellen.



Du kannst Dein Windows allerdings nicht dazu bringen, alle betriebssysteminternen Texte auf Japanisch anzeigen, wenn Du eine deutsche Version von Windows benutzt -- dafür brauchst Du schon entweder eine japanische oder multilinguale Version von Windows. Ich glaube allerdings, dass sich die Startmenügrafik mit einem Programm namens "Reshacker" ändern lässt, was ich allerdings noch nie versucht habe.

Übrigens hab ich noch etwas zu meckern: die übliche Schreibweise des japanischen Wortes für "danke" ist "Arigatou", nicht "Arigatoo", lange O-Laute werden meistens (nicht immer, aber jedenfalls im Fall von "Arigatou") mit "ou" wiedergegeben. "Sayonara" hat dazu ein kurzes "o".

Übrigens: Dein Nickname (jooji) ist in Katakana geschrieben, was für "japanifizierte" westliche Namen gebräuchlich ist. Um ihn zu "replizieren", stelle den IME auf Katakana um, und gib ein:
jo (Leertaste) ﾃ歇/b] (Leertaste) ji (Leertaste.)

Da die japanische Tastatur etwas anders belegt ist als die japanische, mußt Du für das Langvokalzeichen halt die Taste drücken, wenn Du die Y-Taste drückst, kriegst Du ein Z und umgekehrt, usw.
 
I don't suppose anyone knows how to translate these right off hand? I've tried myself, but because of my VERY LIMITED kanji knowledge it is proving to be neigh impossible... :/ It is for a friend who is starting a martial arts school nearby under his system.

I don't really know, either. More knowledgeable folks: Would 龍の尻尾 (tatsu no shippo) or 龍尾 (ryuubi) be okay for "Dragon's tail"?

I'm fairly sure "ultimate fist" translates into 真拳 (shinken), though.
 
I was told by another poster that titles like this use "Sino-Japanese compounds." Knowing very little about Kanji at this point, that leaves me at one place.

Screwed.

It seems much of the connections are taken out from the names I've seen, but I'm not sure about anything so everything I DO come up with, is always a total blind guess.
 
Hmm, I guess what he means is that you'd most likely use kanji compounds that are read "on" (on readings are usually based on Chinese readings of kanji and therefore you could call them Sino-Japanese.)
I'd tend to agree with him. Two of my suggestions 龍尾 (ryuubi) and 真拳 (shinken) are both kanji compounds that are read "on".

Tatsu no shippo is read kun because it isn't really a kanji compound.
 
This is one interpretation at least of ultimate ultimate fist, not sure it is what's being looked for or not.

When giving directions, what does "tsuki atari" exactly mean? I have a pretty good idea, but I would like to get the actual meaning.

Typically (but not always) used as
[Something]のつきあたり
as in
廊下のつきあたり end of the corridor
通りのつきあたり end of the street
道の突き当たり end of the road

OK I'm going to give you a top tip.

1. type "site:.jp" into a google search box
2. add the word you want to translate
3. hit 'search'.

Often the 'translation' will be easily seen.

1) Gundam ガンダム
2) Macross マクロス
3) Star Trek スタートレック
etc, etc.

Then come back here with the list to check.
