Need a word or phrase translated?

While 「別々の道を歩きました」 makes perfect sense, 「別々の道へ進みました」would be more common and sound less like a line from a song. Unless the rest of the letter were written in that particular "style", it would sound a bit out of place.

I was thinking. This sounds like a personal letter. Should we really be taking apart every sentence trying to make it perfect? I have a feeling whoever is writing this letter knows the person receiving it. Wouldn't they find it odd when they receive a letter written in perfect Japanese from someone they know doesn't speak the language at that level? I don't know.... just a thought.
 
That is where I heard it. In a song. It must have a poetic cast in the vein of 我が道を進んだ (We went along our own paths in life ?). Very nice, if not fitting for this occasion.

I know what you mean ASHI, but this isn't to impress anyone. This is just to help me learn to converse in Japanese. I think it would be better to have things perfect and learn them and know them, then to send something that you think is right, but is very very wrong. Just my $.02. And thank you guys for all you have done. I know my Japanese level isn't really high but I am working to make it better!

Which do you mean by "a Japanese penpal"?
1. A penpal who is Japanese:
日本人のペンパルを見つけたい。
2. A penpal who would communicate in Japanese
日本語のペンパルを見つけたい。
[note] You can replace 見つけたい with 探したい.

Do you mean e-mail address? If so,
ゆみかみやこのメールアドレスを知っていますか？
(More casual speech will be 知ってる？ instead of 知っていますか？）
Do you know the e-mail address of Yumi or Miyako?
You can also say
メールアドレスを持っていますか？
持つ = to have
But for e-mail address it is more natural to say 知っている.

I forgot to put the difference between wanting to communicate in Japanese and not just a 日本人 to talk to.

Would you say overall, I grasped most of the concept?
 
I think you understood the basics.

Just be careful about the particles, and some basic words (especially verbs)... words in Japanese and in English do always not match one by one.

I tried using Jim Breen's dictionary to translate the kanji and other phrases.

現在日本の六月は梅雨空でご_知かと思いますが雨の日が多くと乙も蒸し_くうつとうしい日が_いています. さて西本松藏氏家系図をご送付いた_まありがとうございます. 興味深く見いたしました. 西本家出身の松藏氏も昭和三十五年に死去されたこと知りました. ご冥福を祈ます. 松藏氏の妻ウメさんも西本家の現在所よりニキロ程度_れに同じ地区の出身だと母親からまいていますが現在家などは_つていません何分にも今から150年前のことで特に記録など_つていません. 私共の母親から(西本シュン)まいた記憶で不明な_が多く(my name)様の意に副えない亊を_念に思います. 從つてご貨_のことについても不明なことが多くありますが判明していることを別紙のとおり送付いたします許し下さい.

In places where I couldn't find the kanji, I inserted an underscore (_) in the area. Here is my attempt at translating:

1. 現在日本の六月は梅雨空でご_知かと思いますが雨の日が多くと乙も蒸し_くうつとうしい日が_いています. (Here in Japan, (in June), the sky is overcast and it is raining most of the days. *not sure if this is correct.)

2. さて西本松藏氏家系図をご送付いた_まありがとうございます. (Thank you for the genealogy of the family of Nishimoto Matsuzou.)

3. 興味深く見いたしました. (We viewed it interestingly.)

4. 西本家出身の松藏氏も昭和三十五年に死去されたこと知りました. (I understand that Matsuzou died in 1960.) *not sure on this one, what is the purpose of されたこ in the sentence?

5. ご冥福を祈ます. (I'm sure they are happy in the afterlife. *not sure if this is correct.)

6. 松藏氏の妻ウメさんも西本家の現在所よりニキロ程度_れに同じ地区の出身だと母親からまいていますが現在家などは_つていません何分にも今から150年前のことで特に記録など浅つていません. (I don't seem to understand this sentence, in particular, the purpose of ニキロ.)

7. 私共の母親から(西本シュン)まいた記憶で不明な_が多く(my name)様の意に副えない亊を浅念に思います. (Our mother Nishimoto Shun's memories were largely uncertain... *don't understand the rest of the sentence)

8. 從つてご貨_のことについても不明なことが多くありますが判明していることを別紙のとおり送付いたします許し下さい. (I don't understand this sentence, though it seems that he is asking me to do (write?) something for him?)

The implication here is that the person's activity was heard of, not seen first hand. If so, use the verb for "hear" in Japanese. 忙しいと聞いてよかった。
Still slightly "learnerish" enough to be authentic.

そして はい、私も夏が大好きです！(also not sure about this one, I just literally translated the "And yes" part, not sure if thats correct.)

As you probably know, June is the rainy season here in Japan so there are many gloomy days that can get quite stifling.
さて西本松藏氏家系図をご送付いただきありがとうございました. Thank you for attaching the family tree of the Matsuzou Nishimoto family.興味深く拝見いたしました.
西本家出身の松藏氏も昭和三十五年に死去されたこと知りました. I understand that Matsuzou of the Nishimoto family also passed the way in 1960.
ご冥福を祈ます(a typo of 祈ります). May he lie in peace.
松藏氏の妻ウメさんも西本家の現住所より二キロ程度離れた同じ地区の出身だと母親からきいていますが現在家などは残つていません. I heard from my mother that Matsuzou's wife, Ume, was of an area just 2 km away from the Nishimoto family's current residence. However none of her relatives remain.
何分にも今から 150年前のことで特に記録など残つていません. As it's already been 150 years since that time, there aren't any records.
私共の母親から(西本シュン)きいた記憶で不明な点が多く(my name)様の意に副えない事を残念に思います. I regret that my mother's unreliable recollections may not meet your expectations.

What is in the parenthesis? Is there supposed to be something inserted in there?
 
Yes. I'll give you the exaple as well.

Elvira,

A "teinei na kotoba" is a polite word. The example is asking you to replace the word いいます with a more polite word. You are given the word もうします as a hint of what to replace it with.
