Need a word or phrase translated?

Now that you mention it, it does sound a lot like it could be another version of "you to suru" as in trying to do something. Unfortunately the example I gave is right out of the book, and contains nothing more than those few words. Not much of an example is it? I suppose until we can fully clear it up I should go with your first explanation. I think it fits. Thanks Elizabeth-san.

Hello everyone

Here are a few questions that would be great if anyone could help with.

1. 。。。。と言わんばかりの言い方

2 。。。と思わんこと - (does this just mean... "I didn't think that it was" (eg. I didn't think that he was such a nice person)
合格と思わんことじゃ
そう思わんこともない

Is that enough context? I can probably provide the exact context if I go through all the notes again.

Thank you everyone.

女は長い髪を枕に敷いて、輪廓の柔らかな瓜実顔をその中に横たえている。

It may be a bit early for me to ask such another complicated question. However, I'd like to test to see if my translation is good enough.

"Her long hair was spread out on the pillow, and the outline of her soft oval face was laying down."

Naturally that doesn't sound right. I can't seem to understand the "をその中に横たえている。" properly. Any hints for this one? I've literally been reading this on and off for the past two days to no avail. Help is beyond appreciated.

Your translation of 女は長い髪を枕に敷いて is good.

The question is the latter part... the core of the sentence is
(輪郭の柔らかな)瓜実顔を(その中に)横たえている

She is laying her oval face in it (= her long hair spread out on the pillow).
「輪郭の柔らかな」 is modifying her 瓜実顔.

She's laying her oval face with soft faceline in it.

Hope it makes sense.

Ah, thanks so much undrentide-san! That sentence is definitely a mouth full for me. I still find it odd that "輪郭の柔らかな" is that way instead of "yawarakana urizanegao no rinkaku wo...." Perhaps it is just a way of writing (maybe an older form?)

Thanks again for the excellent explanation. I'm glad to see you back here and hope you will be able to take a rest from your busy schedule.

Can someone just keep me on the write lines with this, please?

"あなたの写真をもっていたら僕にくれますか"

If he asking me for a photograph? I tried looking up the kanji on PopJisyo.com, but the second one came out as 'manservant' so, now I'm a little confused. ^^; Could comeone lend a hand, please?

Yes, the person wants a photo of you, though the Japanese is not perfect... Maybe written in a rush?? ☺

Perhaps. Thank you for helping out.
Out of curiosity, what is the last kanji in that sentence?

That 僕 ?
It's boku: I, first person pronoun, usually used by man

or shimobe: manservant

Hi everyone!

Would anyone translate the following sentence please?

たとえそれが活動中のエージェントであっても、サポト要員には異変が感知できるだろう. (context: they are hunting for a spy within the police)

The key area is には。には means "to" right? As in 彼には告白できません (cannot confess your love to him).

Could anyone clear this up?

Thank you very much.

Hello everyone,

monday, I have an interaction test with my sensei.. I was thinking that these phrases could be useful (if a bit tongue in cheek) to be used:

"I'm very shy, so I'll be speaking slowly.. " or something like that?

"Thanks for your time sensei!" -> ありがとうございました、 お時間をとりまして!

"Can we practice conversation about hobbies?" ちょっと しゅみ の 話 を れんしゅうしてもいいですか?

so yeah, I'm guessing there are a lot of mistakes above..

よろしくお願いします!

Hello everyone
Anyone out there for lamshopping-san ??? I'll give it my best preliminary shot and hope for some later protection.

Here are a few questions that would be great if anyone could help with.
1. 。。。。と言わんばかりの言い方

A way of referring to (circling around) something as though to say, as if to say...without it having to be mentioned directly ?

2 。。。と思わんこと - (does this just mean... "I didn't think that it was" (eg. I didn't think that he was such a nice person)

Where are you reading it as the past ? "I don't think" I would have said...思わん the shortened form of 思わない、?

合格と思わんことじゃ

I don't think it is passing...

そう思わんこともない

I think so.

1. 。。。。と言わんばかりの言い方

~と言わんばかり means "as if saying ~"
ん of 言わん is believed to have been derived from む for tentative particle.
~と言わむばかり=~と言おうとするかのような impling, hinting heavily that ~

e.g.
まるで「お前が悪い」と言わんばかりの言い方だった。
He said as if saying "it's our fault!".

Elizabeth san already answered this one, so this is just a sort of side note...

思わん=思わない
This ん came from ぬ of negation.
合格と思わんことじゃ:合格と思わないことだ。 (sounds like oldman's speech)
You shouldn't think you'd passed it.
そう思わんこともない:そう思わないこともない
I would not think it wasn't so. (= I think it was.)

に is for or to.

私にできる。 for me it is possible to ~
彼に告白する。 to confess to him.

The key here is は, it is used to distinct the case you're talking about from others.
彼に言えない。 I cannot tell him.
彼には言えない。 I might tell others, but I cannot tell him.
彼に感知できる。 It is noticeable for him.
彼には感知できる。 Others may not notice, but he will.

Does switching to 輪郭がやわらかい make it any more understandable ? I'm sure you knew it's exactly the same meaning using either particle」ですよね。

ああ、意味としては、合格したと思わないほうがいいねに近いですね。

Don't soar too far out of reach (get too whirled up in your mania) before the results have been scored and returned っていうような意味だと思います。

そう思わんこともない:そう思わないこともない
I would not think it wasn't so. (= I think it was.)

I still don't get the use of the past tense. :? But "I don't think (ever?) that it isn't so" as the literal translation, without being clearly affirmative or negative, is essentially a carefully guarded 'in between' opinion, if my reading is correct.

That's true, the particle no/ga can be substituted in situations like this. I just didn't catch that one, thanks for the hint.

Ah, you are right - or rather, そう is too vague to translate into one single "correct" phrase, it could be anything including tense.

Thank you Elizabeth-san!

long shot, since my exam is 9.5 hours from now, but does this sound right?

あの。。 先生、失礼ですが。。週末はどうでしたか?楽しかったですか?忙しかったですか?

大阪弁わかりますか?勉強しやすいですか、この弁?面白いだから、ちょっと勉強したいね。 先生は大阪弁と東京弁とどちらが好きですか?

テストについては、ちょっと負けてくださいね。(←大阪弁 (^O^))

Maybe I'll end the exam with hona sainara.. but I think that's going too far

thanks again Elizabeth-san

どういたしまして。

kawaiisan の先生は、標準語と同じくらい流暢に大阪弁を話せると思いますか?か? 日本のどこに住んでいますか?昔は、もっと方言が強かったけど。。。全国的に標準語に近くなりつつありますね。本当に残念ですね。

でも、この場合は、先生に聞かないで、どちらでも好きなほうを使ってくださいね。

(Without asking your teacher, I advice you to speak which ever way you like).

あまり深く考えすぎると混乱しますよ。 (If you sit there and ponder the differences between standard Japanese and Osaka ben, I guarantee you will become even more deeply pessimistic). ですね。

大阪弁もわかりますか?それは、勉強しやすい方言ですか?面白かったら、ちょっと勉強したいですよね。 先生は大阪弁と東京弁とどちらが好きですか?
