And since you must be talking about someone else with 来る、
using the subject is probably clearer as well as 来ないでしょうね。

This sentence was on JLPT3 last year, and I don't quite get it. Could somebody explain me what's the meaning of this?

Watashi wa haha o nakaseru youna koto ga shitakunai.

I understand it's passive, but other than that, I don't understand this sentence.
 
I suppose these would be alright : "I don't want to do anything for my mother
to cry over (to make my mother cry )...."

私は母を泣かせるようなことがしたくない。
 
Hi..I'm new o.o And I'm having much trouble with this sentence..if soemone could please translate I would be SO HAPPY! I looked up the kanji but I can't put the sentence together for the life of me....it's from a comic so I hope it will make sense..I know it's about the cherry blossom festival..and the one part is drunkard...

花見 中 の 仕事 は, 酔 つ 払 い drunkard 同士 の, ケンカ 仲裁 ばつか, だな 結構 体力 使 うぜ

edit:the comma I put in..means that it was one vertical line and then a new vertical line started
 
Some parts I wasn't sure of but it looks something like "The work of cherry blossom viewing, is arbitrating fights between drunken buddies punishable (a punishment?) ? it is sufficient (wonderful) use of physical force" :?

 
誰か「一応」という言葉の使い方を説明してくれませんか・・・
どうやって使われるのか全然解らなくて、文に使ってみると絶対にだめなんです。

すぐに浮かぶのが「一応お知らせします」という決まり文句だけです。

もっと詳しく教えられなくてごめんなさいね。 かていを作った例文をお願いします。

数年前買った本から引用します。

いちおう 【一応】 just in case; for the time being

①念のため、用心のためというとき使います。（例１）
②十分ではないけれど最低基準だけは満たす、つまり、ひととおりなんとかする・なるというとき使います。（例２，３，４，５，６，７）

  1. 雨が降るかどうかわからないけれど、いちおう傘を待っていこう。
  2. あなたの言い分もいちおうわかりました。

  3. 熱は、いちおう下がりました。
  4. いちおう手当てはしておきましたが、まだ痛むようなら、あしたまた病院に来てください。
  5. こんどの旅行にいくらぐらいかかるか、いちおう計算してみました。
  6. 新しい家も、いちおうの形はできてきました。
  7. 彼には、あんなにお世話になったのだから、いちおうのあいさつは、しておくべきです。

同じような質問がたくさんあるなら、この本をお勧めします。もう出版されていないようですが、分かりやすくて、ローマ字だけじゃなくちゃんと漢字（ふりがな付き）でも説明や例文が書かれていますから手に入れれば役立つことでしょう。

まっ、実は特定な文がありませんでした（どうやってちゃんと使用されるのか分かっておかなかったのせいで・・・）。といっても、いま文に使ってみましょう：

①使用テスト：「いちおう」っていう言葉が理解できるようになっていますけれど、一応ちゃんと理解できないかどうかわからないので、この例文を書いていますね。
②使用テスト：日本語がいちおう喋れますね。

私が見た時点では、アマゾンでは２冊しかなかったから買うなら今のうちだ！もしくはクリスマスは近いから親（あっ！ごめん！サンタさんだね！）に頼めばなんとかなるかもしれない。

ちなみに「お勧めする」というのは謙譲語だから、自分の行動にしかつかえないのです。相手のことなら、「薦めてくれた本」とか「薦めてくださった本」のほうがいいのではと思います。

これはどうですか。

私にはまだ「本当にわっかているのかな～」という不安があるが、いちおうこの例文を作ってみた。

いちおう日本語はできるけど、専門的な話になると困りますね。

ウィスコンシン州に住んでいるよね。実は私もウィスコンシン出身なんだ！仲間だ～！家はどこ？

Is the phrase take an exam/pass an exam/fail na exam used with "wo" or "ni"?

I mean shiken wo ukeru/tooru/ochiru or shiken ni ukeru/tooru/ochiru ?

Well, it just depends of course.

Shiken ni gougaku suru/pasu suru/touru/ochiru

Shiken wo ukeru

There may be more but I think these are all OK.
 
shiken wo ukeru = take a test
shiken ni ukaru = pass a test

Yes, I knew there was something I had forgotten.
I think 試験に合格 is probably most common, although either ni ukeru" or "ni pasu suru" may come in second. I'm not sure of any nuanced distinctions among them.
 
I have a million questions for this thread, but lucky for anyone that might respond, I can't seem to summon up any complicated ones at this moment. So just this:

"__keredo" How is this any different than the usage of "kedo"? Never been clear on that.

Kedo is just a shortened form so more colloquial and something you would use casually or with your friends for connecting two clauses or sentences. I've seen and use "keredo" but not "kedo" in the sentence initial position as well although without being positive of the correctness of this on formal grammatical terms.
 
Thanks so much for replying! The sentence is really confusing I guess XD But it helped me out a lot.

I have a couple of questions if anyone wants to answer I posted on LJ but...I think it's maybe slang so I'm confused I don't know..

All I can get from this is something like...Although I'm hungry, no one went to buy food..and I looked up the beginning and seperately it's 'that's why, difficult' but I had no idea o.o

I understand everything except for the なっちゃって Someone told me it means soemthing like 'just kidding' but for the sentence..which is saying the petals (from a cherry tree) are covering (the person in the manga panel)..it doesn't make sense and it's naa..not nan too.

Does this mean something like..'nevermind'? And does it change the meaning if its only いから instead of いいから

And finally I know この means 'this' but can it also mean 'you' when saying something about someone directly to them? Like if someone calls you a nickname like this to your face.... この sleepyhead

This should be a quick one:

I'm not sure where the sentence break is in the 2 lines. The assumption is:
「You are you 少女よ」 is a sentence.
No idea if 今こそ stands alone or is the beginning of a sentence that goes to the next line. The real problem is, I don't know what こそ means.

The way it's sung makes it sound line the sentence would end after 少女 and よ今こそ is a sentence.


Edit: Never mind. Found out what I needed when I looked it up in a good dictionary.
こそ (prt) for sure (emphasize preceding word)

Sorry if anyone has checked back. This thread looks like it has been abandoned. なっちゃって is a colloquial form of "natte shimau."

It sounds to me more like "That's enough already!" or "That's good enough," but I suppose much of it depends on your tone and attitude.

「い」は「いい」を短くしないともいます。☝

I think 気づは is probably a simple typo. まちがいとしか思わないです。

Hello.
I have a question. Is there a word in Japanese that means 'maybe', and really means 'maybe', rather than 'probably'?

(If there is an answer, kana as well as kanji would be helpful for me because as yet I can only read kana.)
