My quest to work for AEON....

I'm currently in the process of applying to AEON. I hope to have my essay done by this week and on top of that find my damn passport. I still can't believe I misplaced it It got lost somewhere between moving from my dorm room to back home. Anyway, just for the record, I just graduated college with a Bachelors Degree last week and I applied for NOVA back in March. I got the interview but ended up not getting the job. It was real discouraging too because I heard from lots of people..."As long as you have a Bach degree and a pulse NOVA willl hire you." I know I didn't have my degree at the time but they were well aware that I would have it by the time of my departure. Anyway, I'm determined to have work in Japan and to able to have the experience of living there. I'm not ready to give up. But I need some help and feedback...

If anyone works/has worked/is planning on working for AEON, please give me whatever feedback you can, especially tips on the interview. Before I had my NOVA interview, I posted a thread asking for a run-through of how it would go. I actually received a reply 2 weeks after my interview and the user replied with EXACTLY how my interview would go. I remember thinking to myself.."WOW!! If only you would have posted this 2 weeks ago?" So, if someone would be able to share any kind of information on AEON, working there, the interview process, etc....I would be MOOOORE than grateful. Arigato!!

Dont know about AEON but Nova is in some serious red ink right now and is having to shut some of it's less profitable locations. So you never know that could have been one of the reasons why you weren't hired. Don't let it get you down though there are plenty of other "schools" looking for warm bodies.

Have you considered JET instead of the assembly line eikaiwa's? Too many people here get literally burned out and hating Japan after working at one of them. At least with JET the pay and benefits are better as well with MUCH MUCH better working hours as well. With an eikaiwa you are going to work holidays and weekends as well so your free time is going to be screwed up too.

The only thing holding me back from working with JET is that I'm unable to apply now. They say I need to apply in Sept for the 2007 program which means I won't be back till 2008. I have other plans for the end of 2007....which is why I wanted to leave now

Actually, i did alot of research on teacher feedback on what to do and not to do for the interview. I do have one question that hasn't been answered.....What are some of the questions they ask you for the interview?

And also....if someone can provide some details about the both lessons...I would greatly appreciate that.

For example...how long do they have to be? can you choose any lesson for both interviews? What did you do your lesson on? What did they give you as far as material goes? etc.. ARIGATO

There wsa recently an article in my local newspaper about a man who had been working for Nova and got seriously mistreated by he company. He ended up sueing them and one the case! The case brought up some serious issues about Nova's treatment of staff in general. They are definantly in "red ink" right now, I highly recommend against working for them.

There's very little point in asking ANYONE about Nova, Aeon, Geos etc. It ENTIRELY depends on which region you get sent to, what your school manager is like, how busy your branch is and whether you get on with your co-workers. Unless you meet the person you are directly replacing, no one else is going to know what your circumstances will be.
For everyone who comes back from Japan moaning about Nova, there is another who keeps their head down, does a half decent job and enjoys their time in Japan. It seems like a sensible thing to try and gauge other peoples experiences, and I don't blame you for trying, but really you will learn very little about what you personally will get out of it.

What about those who were here before they started working for Nova, kept their heads down, did a good job, are still here well after they left Nova....and still don't have a damned thing good to say about it?

I worked for AEON from 2001 to 2003. I did my interview in Vancouver, where they had one on one interviews, so if you are doing it anywhere else I won't be able to offer much advice because the process is not the same.

One word of advice I can give you is if they ask where you want to work, choose somewhere in Western Japan. The company is divided into AEON west and AEON east, and the management style is quite different between the two. I've heard nothing but bad things about AEON east, but I worked in the west where the head office was fairly helpful and not a hassle. If you want to live in Tokyo, then you'll be stuck with AEON East, but if you don't mind working elsewhere I suggest a place in west Japan.
