I finally met someone who speaks proper japanese on chat. I decided to go back to chats, because it helps me pratice and learn the kana better.

Just let us know what you want to say in Japanese before (and keep it to the same thread) you go into a chat so you don't have to use either a translator or English.

Japanese people are always going to say your Japanese is good, or at least not bad, out of sheer politeness. They may be more impressed if you use the one jt_san taught you : 日本語合っていますか？ or 日本語はどうですか？(How is my Japanese) than 日本語が好きですか？Do you like my Japanese, sounds almost as strange as Do you like my English ?

You DO give helpful advice. Criticism most of the time, but I do appreciate it. I do need a 'reality check' I suppose. I went to that web site to learn japanese, and I am getting a good text book. At least I have a passion for it, eh?

Are you being sarcastic when you say I'm right? for example, I have a feeling I'm NOT right, here's why:

I thought kara means 'from', but apparently, it means 'emptiness.'
You know, I don't give up easy

So perhaps it was "Your japanese is emptiness , skilled."

Hmm. I was sure 'like' was suki and that was appropriate. I don't see how 'do you like my english?' is wrong or bad, but Ok.

'Dou' in this case means 'How'. I also agree that asking someone how they 'like' your [language] is somewhat odd.

OK sorry. I didn't mean to step on any toes, but when you didn't get the kana right for Doko I wasn't sure. That is just the expression, the person's country is where ? 方 never means from.....although sometimes it is "hou," or which.

I didn't mean they would never tell you it was bad, but when they do say it was good it may be out of sheer politeness if that makes any sense. I'm sure when they said it sucked it wasn't that they disliked as you would dislike a person or a toy but that it was simply not very good.

Another thing, did you try if you could get a hold on a textbook or japanese class somewhere in the neighbourhood,I assure you you will like it (At least if you're as enthousiastic about the language as me )

I already understand the basics. How am I asking everyone every 5 minutes? I got every phrase correct, honestly, for a beginner, I think that's pretty good. I was asking TO MAKE SURE I got everything correct. What's wrong with that? Someone is sending me a textbook for christmas..As for classes, none in my neighbourhood. There may be some 30 minutes away in phoenix, but thats a waste of gas..

Don't you have trouble with this? Even with sarcastic and some grammer situations, I saw you were struggling with the 'train' phrase in another post. And you're quite good in japanese! Amazing. I Guess you can never stop learning it, even when you are fluent! Hehe

I'll be very impressed if your love for the language persists even after learning the train situation was actually the exact opposite -- confusion with a word with the same pronunciation and meaning just three different kanji ( 止まる、留まる、停まる ).

Seriously, the number of homonyms is one of the most difficult aspects of learning....which is why most Japanese have to speak in such short sentences just to understand each other, never mind アメリカ人... (not アメリカン人)。

Also, do you think japanese would understand in this situation it means the opposite? How often does this happen?

Thank you, I recently got a merry christmas message from a japanese friend. He told me I (or him) wouldn't stay in touch. He said my japanese has improved ,but he also mentioned violence? I see this word, being used a lot. Do you have any idea he means?
