A moderately explosive eruption occurred at Mount Shinmoedake (新燃岳), which straddles the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in southern Kyūshū , at 16:37 JST on 22 June. The JMA reported that the eruption produced an ash plume rising approximately 500 metres above the crater rim. As of the initial report, no large volcanic bombs, pyroclastic flows, or significant atmospheric disturbances had been observed outside the immediate vicinity of the summit.
The volcano remains under Alert Level 2 on JMA's five-tier scale, advising against entry near the crater. Local authorities urged residents and tourists to stay at least two kilometres from the crater due to the ongoing threat of falling debris and sudden eruptive events. Mount Shinmoedake is part of the larger Kirishimayama volcanic group and is known for intermittent explosive activity. The previous eruption episode occurred in 2018, when the volcano produced ash plumes up to 2,600 metres and deposited tephra several kilometres from the vent.
