More Japanese Males getting Plastic Surgery

The attached article is in Japanese but note the "before and after" photos. In both cases, the very thin eyes have been "softened" or made "rounder". Plastic surgeons in Japan have perfected a minimally invasive, inexpensive procedure to change the shape of "Oriental eyes". Many women have been getting this surgery but more and more men are opting for it as well.

Why change something that's not a deformity? Why do so many Japanese (I can't speak for other Oriental groups) don't like the shape of their eyes?

If this procedure were widely available in the U.S., would American Orientals get it?

It also looks like they had not just eye jobs, but nose jobs too. And lips? Anyway, I think plastic surgery for Japanese males has gotten popular with the whole J-Rock scene anyway, right? The feminine look is what's in, and I guess they're going a little further than just putting on cosmetics.

There are just too little good-looking Asian men. With the popularity of plastic surgeries on Asian men, the numerous beautiful oriental girls out there don't need to scratch one another's faces to fight for a few okay-looking (usually not even handsome) oriental guys anymore.

Actually, due to the popularity of Korean drama, Shanghai guys begin to pick up the trend too.

However, "beauty is but skin deep," they say. For Asian men who are going to have plastic surgeries, remember to save some money for the LV handbags.

And the Prada shoes too!

Good look doesn't mean everything.

It's a bit scary how people are treating plastic surgery as a product. Just accept what your parents give you.
However, I must say that the before and after look is significantly different. I guess people still cares a lot about the physical appearance and it is a fact that people DO judge others by the cover.

Plastic surgery is becoming more available and popular, period. Not just a phenomenen (sp?) in Japan. I guess it didn't used to be so usual for men to get plastic surgery unless they were actor or model, but perhaps it's something to do with changes in lifestyle and society which make it more 'acceptable' (for want of a better word) for men to get their face altered also?

In any case I think it is rather sad.

I always go on and on about how adorable the jrockers are, and how much I looove pretty japanese guys; then, when I read this, my first reaction was 'omg, this is not good, plastic surgery isn't good' ... .but then I though- but hey, wait... I'm one of thos girls who love beautiful guys, and there are hundreds out there. These men, who go through plastic surgery, do so to become more attractive, or to achieve what they (and probably a lot of other people too) consider hot/pretty/good looking. If these guys weren't born with round eyes - shouldn't there be a chance for them to get them? If that's the beauty-standard, should them still have to go around and feel bad about their slanting eyes? Tons of japanese girls have already done it.

I agree that it's horrible that the japanese and other asian people should dislike the way they look (slanting eyes) - because slanting eyes can be really cool and pretty too. But, then again, I think, and a lot of other people too, that round eyes can be the prettiest thing ever. I'm not sure then what to think about this. It's easy to badmouth plastic surgery, but then again... it's also difficult not to follow the beauty trends. Most people have an average view on what's pretty. I'm not saying we ALL like blonde gals with huge boobs. Off course we all have different taste, but there are still some things that we all consider more or less pretty.

Slanting eyes are pretty. But then again, I'm not gonna contradict myself. The jrockers all have rounder shaped eyes and beautiful features. Off course, they're definitely not all about the looks for me - the music is the most important - but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find them attractive

I just think it is sad that people feel the need to change their appearence in this way.

Of course, I can understand that people want to look attractive (however you might define "attractive"). I mean, that's a normal human thing to want... but I can't help feeling that they are looking for happiness in the wrong places.

*coughcough* I think the mention of jrock (although don't get me wrong, I can see where KNM is coming from on that one) is clouding the issue somewhat... Referring particularly to the eye surgery: in fact, when someone looks at something they find attractive (e.g. hot bloke/girl or whatever!) the pupil of the eye expands, it makes the eye look wider, so, if a person have wide eyes and looks at you, it sends out the signal some how they find you attractive. So there is a biological reason humans tend to be attracted to wide/rounder eyes. In the same way as we are attracted to fuller lips.

Of course, also each country have certain "stars" that people look up to and find attractive, certain movie or music people, so also this encourage a trend to try and look more like them, too.

I think people should only have plastic surgery only if they absolutely need it like me. I needed reconstructive ear surgery done because I never had an ear on the right side of my head. I got the surgery because I need it for glasses (gun glasses, working glasses, sun glasses, my regular glasses, etc). Still I think all this vanity is started to ebb even more into the whole "you have to look this way to be attractive" sort of mentality. Your purely superficial mentality if you woulud like to look at it that way. This type of stuff just really pisses me off.

I can understand that people get annoyed with people getting plastic surgery unnecessarily... but I have no problem with it, if I had the extra cash floating around there are a few nips and tucks I would like to have.
Maybe because the majority of my friends have had plastic surger (albiet they havent all had 'good' plastic surgery), im accustomed to it. Oh thats my friends here in Korea.
Lots of them will get plastic surgery graduation presents from their parents. I watched a documentary the other day about young young children getting double eyelid surgery. When it is the parents pushing it onto their kids, thats when it's wrong, but if a person genuinely wants it, and not from being forced to want it, thats fine.
If a parent doesnt like the look of their kids eyes or nose, why did they bother to reproduce if they are going to be that shallow?
Hmm just goes hand in hand with the whole hand mirror generation anyway. But yeah, if plastic surgery is done well, looks great

Superficially, I would like to be pretty, but actually I think I am a stronger person because I am not. I have had to make up for it in other ways and in the end I know I have benefitted more.

I agree with you Kinsao. When you are not pretty, you know that if people like you, they like you for who you are not how you look. The guys in that article started out as handsome Japanese-looking guys and ended up as mediocre western-looking guys. Japanese looks are nice!

I agree with you Kinsao; off course, prettiness doesn't always gain you happiness, most of the time, I'd say the opposite. As you say, one might become stronger and get a better confidence if they're not ultra-super-pretty, since they instead develop a strong personality behind whatever face they've got.
If you're brought up believing (or knowing) you're really pretty - then you'll also be brought up believing your looks is the most important thing you've got. And that's not good, because it will end up in vanity and/or bad confidence.

But at the same time, I'd have to object; Tsuyoiko. You were basically saying that if a person is pretty, they can't get 'real friends' because people will like you because you're pretty, and not because you're you. That's wrong. Off course some people who are considered good looking are gonna have a good personality also - not all pretty people are stupid, just as not all 'ugly' people are smart and sentitive and funny...

I agree though; Japanese looks are nice. But then again, w h a t japanese look? They don't ALL look the same, now do they? There are millions of differences, just are there are with western people.

That's not what I said at all. I said if you are not pretty then you know that if people like you it is not for your looks. That is not at all close to saying that pretty people can't get friends. But a lot of people (e.g. Lexico, Limonette, Void) argue on the 'Best physical attribute' thread that many beautiful people feel that they are judged on their looks - how often this is true, I don't know. But I would certainly never suggest that anyone can't get friends.

You're right, it is wrong to generalise, and of course I don't think all Japanese people look the same, and I don't find all Japanese people attractive. I just like a small, toned body, black hair, brown eyes and small facial features - and many Japanese, Chinese and Korean people fit this description.

I'm sorry for any confusion I have caused by not spelling things out and I hope I have made it clearer what I meant.

Yes, I had major reconstructive surgery done about three years ago on my right ear. You see I was born with what is called right micromicrosha which basically means I was born without a right ear. I have no ear canal, the three bones that make up your ear drum is one solid bone, and I am considered legally deaf on my right side. For years my Mother wanted me to get the surgery done because she wanted me to be like all the other normal kids. However, my Father didn't want me to suffer as a child so he said they should until I was old enough to decide. Needless to say 13 years of hell followed after that decision where suicide almost became the primary factor in my life.

Anyway after I lost the weight I decided to do the ear surgery strictly for my glasses. I mean sure it feels good that I don't look like a total freak anymore, but I still got it for the glasses. It was made with all my own body parts too, so it's a natural ear. However, there is no bowl in the ear to make it look like I have an ear canal. Sure I could have more surgery done, but I've dealt with enough pain and scars from the last two to want another surgery. Not only that, but if women can't like, love, or accept me just because of a damn ear then it shows that they are nothing more than a shallow, superifical, greedy ******* who I hope realize their poor qualities and reasons for wanting a partner before it's too late.

Your story about the ear is really really interesting. I never knew. (well, obviously ) ... I'm sorry to hear you've had a tough childhood because of it, hope you're feeling better and a LOT more confident now.

I think the whole thing about your ear is just fascinating and cool! I think it's amazing that they can make an ear out of ones own body parts. Although.. surgery is hard and tiresome...
Still though, I don't see how your ear could be a problem when getting ladies...

I love Japanese men's eyes - they're gorgeous - they should keep 'em the way they are!

And, to me if a guy only had one ear - it would make him interesting, a bit different than anyone else, and that wouldn't be a negative at all. And it would be cute the way his glasses would be all crooked across his face and falling off like. Although I imagine hard to see with and keep on.

I think there's a whole load of difference between getting plastic surgery for medical reasons, like Doc, and getting plastic surgery so that you can make yourself look more "beautiful".

Maybe Doc's surgery wasn't exactly "medical", because it didn't improve his hearing, but... I don't mean to sound insulting to anybody, but it is usual to have certain features like 2 eyes, a nose, 2 ears... so if someone is lacking of one feature and it is possible to reconstruct, I think this is fine because it just provide them with "average" looks. (Personally, it doesn't make a difference to me if someone has one ear only; I certainly wouldn't think they were necessarily ugly or unattractive for that reason, I would probably just think "that's unusual" and stop from noticing it. But it doesn't stop someone from maybe feeling bad about themself.)

But yeah, I think there's a difference between surgery to provide of "standard" looks and surgery to provide of "above usual standard" looks. People who want to have their eyes made a more attractive shape should perhaps be contented that they have both of their eyes.

I hope you feel that the surgery was worth it, Doc, and has made improvement in your life. Hey, falling-off glasses may be cute, but I'm sure not very easy to live with!

Well if I did the surgery out of pure vanity I would say it wasn't worth it due to all the scars on my body, and the pain that I get when winter time rolls around. However, considering that I hate contacts, and need to wear glasses at all times (well not at all times) then I say it was worth it. The surgens did tell me that the advancements in making people hear is on a steady course, and could come up with a surgical solution within the next 10 to 20 years. However, the reason why they can't do it now is because they don't have any machines that tell them where the nerves are on the side of my head. You see if they go cutting around, they could cut a nerve, and the whole right side of my face would be paralyzed. Now you can see why they didn't do anything. Still I'm optimistic that they will come up with a proper procedure in my lifetime.
