Might be joining a japanese class soon

Soon I will be joining a japanese class. I'm not sure when. I haven't been able to post here for awhile because I've moved away from my parents now and live in a group home. There are staff there 24/7 and it's to make me independant. I might consider just not learning japanese anymore. I hope to visit japan though. The reason for learning japanese was to translate japanese video games. It all revolved around video games and until recently I didn't realize that learning a whole language, especially a hard one like japanese, to translate video games is ridiculous, and it would probably take many, many learns to be able to read the kanji nessicary.

I just wanted to say hello again, to mikecash, to pacincopro (Sorry about the name), to elizabeth, and Hiroyuki Nagashima.

Oh yeah..I forgot. I have a friend there at the house, and he's always asking me how to say crude stuff in japanese. I told him one word Zakkenayo and he always says it to me because he jokes alot. I made up some phrase which probably doesn't make any sense but I was trying to form a sentence: Watashi no neko chinchin desu.

I really wish I knew more things to bring up when talking to him. He really doesn't want to learn the language, just stupid words. I have the Pimsleur's japanese audio tapes and I listen to them sometimes too.

When I was your age they discontinued Japanese classes when I was finally able to take them because they wern't popular enough (needless to say they are popular enough now.) Enjoy and I hope you learn alot, also some great advice: Travel to Japan as much as possible, it's like someone brainwashing you with the Japanese language, then you'll return home, study more (study what you felt you needed to know,) go back, return, study more and so on... It's an easy language to learn though, it might not seem like it the first few years but then one day you'll wake up and you will be able to understand every song, every TV show and more importantly every Japanese girl.

Yeah I wish I could. Just seems like learning it just for video games isn't worth it. What if i stop playing them? I'm going to have to take my family too so It's going to be quite an expensive trip.

Someone from my group home called it a "pipedream." I was quite offended by that. When I get there I'm sending him a postcard!

I think that a good Japanese class would be great for you since you had problems studying on your own. I know that when doinkies tried to self-study, I had a hard time of it and would always forget things, but then I took a class and I always remembered things, and how grammar works, and such.

I agree, learning Japanese from the Japanese makes it much easier.

No textbook explenations of the finer details, just immersion, its as simple as learning how the natives speak it and coyping, bingo.

You are on the right page, I can sense it, just surround yourself with Japanese as much as possible, even when you can't understand, just keep listening and wanting to know, as long as you want to know you will eventually know.

I was a poor kid growing up, parents divorced, we couldn't afford dinner most of the time, I never thought I'd be able to go to Japan but I did, six times since 2001 (when I was like 18- 19) , everything in the world is possible, I'm living proof.

Keep in mind also that taking the Japanese class will give you some useful benefits even if you don't learn much Japanese or ever use it for anything.

Getting out and doing something is better than not going out and doing nothing. The classroom is a social setting, so you can meet new people and make new friends. You'll benefit from that and learn new things just by knowing them. You'll learn study skills and learn about learning and learn about languages (including English!) just by being there and trying your best. Whether or not you advance much in Japanese or whether you ever use it is really sort of beside the point.

It's sort of like when I used to go fishing with my friend all day every Thusday many years ago. Many times we would come home with no fish at all. For some reason, my wife thought that that meant the day was a waste. I told her that catching fish wasn't the point of going fishing. Getting away from things and enjoying a nice peaceful day at the river or lake away from everything and shooting the breeze with a good friend based on the excuse of going fishing was the point. If we caught fish, that was just an added benefit.

And if you do actually pick up some Japanese, that opens the door to more and more things you can do with Japanese beyond your interest in video games, which you have shown the wisdom of recognizing might be a passing interest. Just because that was your original reason doesn't mean that it will end up being your final reason. The more you learn, the more broadly you can use it.

All knowledge you acquire in life increases the paths you can choose to take. Lack of knowledge limits your horizons. There will always be knowledge you acquire and for whatever reason don't put to use; but there is no useless knowledge.

Don't Give Up Kevin

Hello Kevin. Nice to you touching base again. I was wondering what happened to you and hoping that you were alright. Please don't think it's rediculous to study Japanese as the beginning of a long journey begins with the first step. Persevere and later on in life you'll be glad you did.

Also, please take heed of Mike Cash's reply above. He said it so well that I cannot add anything else to tell you why should persue your dreams and to never give up no matter what obstacles stand in your way. If you have the will, you'll find a way. Trust us on this.

And don't let anyone steal your dream by telling you, "It's just a pipedream." What do they know? There are too many "dream stealers" out there snatching away peoples dreams when they themselves have never accomplished anything in their lives because they were afraid to face the obstacles or just gave up when things became a little difficult. Never listen to someone who has "never been there and done that" ok? Too many people do and they never persue their dreams.

As the others have mentioned above, it is NOT a pipedream. Without dreams and goals people get nowhere in life. A wise man once said, "Most people live their lives in quiet desperation." Don't be one of these people. You can do it and you have alot of people here rooting for you. "Go Kevin Go!"

my dream is to see everything...or at least see alot of things, and most of the famous things, to see mountains and glacial valleys and rugged river valleys and forests and wild hills and lakes and deserts and islands and yeah, travel and explore....if I was born just a few years before Colombus chances are I would have been in the text-books, or at least mentioned, I've got the free spirit of an explorer in an age without need for them...but I guess I can explore for myself for my own eyes sake.

Anyway never give up on your dreams, thats all life is, dreams, if you give up on dreams you give up on life, and why should you give up on a dream?....the only price a dream asks is patience to work towards it.

I'm too skint now....but give myself enough time and patience and I will have a nice tucked away savings stash to just go travel.

Eevery atronomer for whatever reason cant go into space...does he complain?...no, he finds ways to let space come to him, and helps science understand the universe better.

Your dreams may not take the exact shape and form you originally envisioned, but they can still be relized.

I missed your first post, but I'm pleased to hear the news! Good luck with your class! It certainly is easier to learn when you are able to talk with other enthusiasts and get some speaking practice. Hang on in there!

I agree with Pachipro about the 'dream stealers'. Don't let them spoil your enjoyment! Anyway, I also agree with Mike Cash about the other good things that come out of learning - you know, I even found that since I started trying to learn kanji, my memory for other things improved too?! So, even if though I still don't know much grammar at all, I feel happy to be learning it.
