thank you very much for your information! it's so lucky that i post to ask here. otherwise i would mail two applications!

btw, the two offers i've got are Keio U and U Tokyo. I am so afraid of failing in getting scholarship. which one do you think will have a higher chance?
 

Depending on the match between your research proposal and your prospective advisors at the two universities. Also you should consider the degree of support that each advisor can provide to you.

In my case, I thought of applying to two universities, and reject one in case I'm nominated by the two (normally there will be additional documents to provide before they submit the final nominations to MEXT). So you may consider that, though to me it was VERY RISKY and I decided not to do that.

So consider your chance, and you can even ask your advisor of your chance of getting MEXT. I think Todai is more competitive, but Keio is a private university so it's likely that it has fewer slots.
 

Hi Chikiball, finally found someone applying to Titech. I applied to the International Development Engineering Department.
I also got the news on the Jan 24th. University acceptance letter will be arriving in Mid of March, and the most awaited letter, MEXT is in late June. According to the Program coordinator, we might be getting the letter in July.

Yeah, it is really a long process to go. So I just keep myself busy all day to let the days pass faster.

Hi, do you by any chance know if this is same by applying to two different courses through the same university?

I received an email confirming the university recommendation today, *****but I couldn't work out which course it was from (same faculty 'admissions office'!)

Also, in general (not a question directly to the quotee): what are the chances of rejection through university recommendation?

Finally, does anyone know if getting a JASSO scholarship in the past will be a bar to MEXT? Through the embassy, it is a bar to entry within 3 years, but the Japanese embassy told me this may be different through university recommendation.

=> as long as the university does not forbid, it's okay. I saw on Titech's website that they do not allow students to apply to MEXT for research student and IGP-A program at the same time. Students will get disqualified if they do do, so in your case where you already got admissions, I think it's OK.

=> very low. I wouldn't say impossible cuzI know a case of rejection. However, if you do not have "glitches" in your profile (such as stopping school in the middle for no good reasons), you'll be fine.

=> it's not written in MEXT's guidelines so far, so I am sure that it's fine with MEXT. As far as I can guess, the embassy nominated JASSO for you before or they are somehow in charge of JASSO scholarship at the same time, and they may put up that policy to give students more equal opportunities to study in Japan. If it's not written, you don't have to worry.

Hello guys, I just registered to this website a little while ago.
Now I'm applying for Tokyo Institute of Technology at the graduate school of interdisciplinary science and engineering. I've also got an e-mail stating that I've been selected as a candidate for mext scholarship. Now what's left is to wait until July for us to see the final result.

This, however, give me concerns over the past weeks because I'm afraid that the situation in Japan will affect MEXT's decision on selecting scholarship recipients.

Anyway, I noticed 3 people(including me) are applying for Tokodai, Hi to you guys again. Hope all of us will have good news in the upcoming months. I wonder how many candidates were recommended by Tokodai, since 4 of them have already appeared on this website. *0*

You can find the number of MEXT recipients for each department in the following page:

As the slots are pre-allocated by MEXT for each school before each fiscal year, you don't have to worry after getting nominated by the school ^^.
 
hi all.... I just registered. I would like to apply and go to test this June (it's June, right?) And I'm so desperate to go because in June I will finish my masters and I don't want to spend a year doing nothing. Does anyone knows what kind of questions I might expect? And, will those earthquakes affect on funds for scholarships? I found professor that I would like to be my mentor, but I don't know how to contact him? Should I say just "hi, I would like to go there" and in next mail, if he answers me do all the details, or I have to do it now? I choose Okayama university. Is there anyone who wants to do PhD on biology/ecology? Or anyone from Serbia or former Yugoslavia who want to apply this year??

I think you can find previous years' exam questions on the department's website. Btw, I don't think it's possible to apply for MEXT this year as the nominations were made to MEXT already. If you'd like to apply for MEXT, you should apply for the 2012's October entrance. However, the deadline is still far ahead. So unless you're already a MEXT recipient, you'll need a financial source for your enrollment this year.
 
the application period and test are different in each country
in Indonesia, the application is from April 11 to May 11,
while the test will be in July.

I will join in an integrated doctoral program in Biology but not in Okayama.
 
where? what's your research field? I'm searching something related to ecology, environmental protection or conservation biology. On my faculty I didn't have much choice to do whatever I want, but I'm interested in mammalogy, herpetology and entomology also. I found professor on Okayama university that i like, but I've heard that it will be good to contact more then one professor in case that chosen professor do not want to accept u.
 
I ll enroll to TokyoTech, will do a research on symbiontic microorganism in termite gut.
Frankly, my background is plant molecular biology, but I dont know why the professor accept me...maybe he needs student.

My advice is contact one professor at a time, wait until one month if he dont reply you can contact another one. In case more than one professor interested in you, it will be a problem, especially when they work in a same department. You cannot turn down one of them, cant you? Plus, it is such a taboo in Japan, if you change your advisor. You should make up your mind before choosing.

But, things will be different if you propose to more than one professor but from different universities.

thuwasomethingsomething.... I know that can be a problem, turning professor down.. I hope that one month is enough. I've just send mail to professor.. Should I specify my field of research in first mail?
 
It really is you should promote yourself in the first email. Showing them that you are serious...
My profesor replied, settled the research proposal in less than one week, but it is depend on how busy your chosen professor is...

@Natasa: usually applications through embassy recommendation are around April/May, depends on country, for Serbia I think it's May, check the embassy site in Serbia...
 
April 21st, still long time to wait.
Anyway, just to share something. Recently, whenever I meet my family/relatives/friends, the first question they would ask is: You STILL want to go to Japan?
I wonder fellow mates here also face the same question?

Yes, I still want to go to Japan, I want to go there at least once more before I die
i drop dead missing Japan so much.
 
yup, same thing here... but i live in f****ng serbia, so japan is better even with radiation and tsunami
