Yes, I think it's pretty good to arrive early. You can use the time to set up your place, and most importantly, to adjust your lifestyle to the new environment. I'm also planning on visiting other major cities in Japan, while I wait for classes to start in my graduate school. If my plan doesn't push through, I guess I'll just finish reading the useful references I gathered for my research and studies in Todai. I've had too much vacation anyway for being unemployed since April. LOL

I just visited the website of Japan embassy in our country and there are files like visa application form, need picture again etc. although it can be downloaded online, they hand it over too there. I would probably call them on Monday to set my visit after August 17. I'd also inquire about the docs needed. I'll update you then. Anyway. I'd be coming from Muntinlupa going to embassy. How about you?
P.S. I too don't know anything about cooking and washing and errr.. But I've been staying in a domitory for 7 years already. Haha.

Lawrence, you see the problem is if you'd be arriving by early September and your dormitory won't let you in during that time (since they will only start letting you in around late Sept.or October 1), you'd have to look for a 1-month accommodation (Sept.), note that they would only release our stipend by the end of October, so that would be a 2-month budget. I know for sure that $2000 is more than enough for a month long stay there, but if it's 2 months, I don't know so as much as I would like to arrive that early too and hop to places, I can't. Hahahahahaha. Plus I'm finishing my M.S. degree here. Lol. Anyway, it would be nice to see you there guys, whenever I happen to visit Tokyo

Oh yes. My university was actually quite liberal about this. Although most dorms have a specific date of arrival that they would like, if you message them about desiring to come earlier they may be able to accommodate you if there are open rooms. In terms of funding, I do agree that coming a month sooner requires an additional month of funding that may not be necessary if you arrive later. The only issue of arriving later (at least for my university) is that there are many procedures, paper work, and orientations that I will need to attend or do and having a month of free time allows me to not rush (in addition to getting used to environment and exploring other cities)

Oh, with regards to dormitory, they told me that they will be the one to choose for me, and I still don't know which one I'd be going to. Hahahahaha. Although they already told me that this dorm would allow me to stay starting on the 28th of September. Anyway, good thing I have a friend who knows someone (Filipino too) who will give my 2-nights stay for free, before I can finally transfer to my dorm. Anyway, based on previous batch testimonials they bring something from their respective countries as "pasalubong".

Hi all,

Congratulations to all who received the MEXT scholarship.

I was offered MEXT as well, but just would like to know, does the offer come directly from MEXT or through the university? All my correspondence regarding the scholarship have all been through the university.

Also, I was offered the MEXT scholarship under the Super Global University (SGU) program. Anyone got an offer in this category? For this category, flight tickets are self-sponsored instead of MEXT sponsored.

Just another question though, my offer is only from October 2016 to March 2017. Is this initial period as a research student or something as I am really not sure with this and it is not mentioned in my notice. Do they like automatically extend the scholarship after that or I have to reapply again? I asked my supervisor and he assured me that the scholarship is automatically extended to 4 years.

Hope someone can enlighten me on this. Thanks!

This is Tracy going to Nagoya U this September. So wow the "Super Global" category really exits. I thought my school staff just made it up to calm me down (I've been kept to wait until August 23) LOL. I have to pay the ticket myself too, but they never mention about the scholarship period.
All the communication is made via the school as in your case. From what I've been hearing I think if your supervisor says it's gonna be 4 years than you can give yourself a big relief.
Anw, congratulations for all the Mext Scholar Fellows.

I have contacted my professor in Osaka University and been interviewed for entrance exam. I have also sent the scans of necessary documents.

- Hi Friends,.anybody applied for UTokyo univ recommendation for Oct2017 admission? I got the acceptance letter from my supervisor. Now waiting for IME screening results. I hope things will work out. Fingers crossed.

Generally for national university recommendation, the procedure includes several approval steps. However once you receive the acceptance by your professor, meaning you have cleared dept and program committee approval, the key decision steps have already been taken and the rest of the steps are formal approvals of these decisions and are normally approved.

For example an application stream may look like this.
• Documents submission
(University checks docs)
•admissions committtee for program approves docs
• interviews and selection
• committeeapproves selection ( committee is often the interview committee)

Sometimes the interviews could be 1-3 stages

• then it goes to formal approval stages
Several committees typically have to approve and the committee names and numbers vary, but it might look like this
Program committee
Department committee
International exchange committee
- faculty meeting (all new students -Japanese an international- must be approved by faulty meeting - typically meeting once a moth - though more in feb and march )

Then it is sent to MEXT in June aprivalnis received from MEXT.

I would not bother your professor because he already gave you is answer. I am sure he will tell you when it is officially finished. Since the in university acceptance will be done if FEB/Mar or so, that might be a good time to "touch base with him" to ask him about the status of your case.

But this is a very busy time for uni profs (end of fiscal year and academic year means that they are dealing grad thesis, grad presentations, thesis defense of J students, admissions, center shiken (today), all undergrad admissions, submitting grades, etc) so wait a bit

Hey all, just want an opinion on my particular situation. I'm applying for University recommendation, October 2017 matriculation, at a top global public University in Japan.

After corresponding for months with a professor at the University, I was able to spend a few days in Japan meeting with him in person, touring the lab, and doing an informal interview. Since then he's made it clear me joining his lab is a priority, and he's helped me get all my application materials in order and make significant changes to my research plan.

At this point, I understand he and the department at the University have submitted my recommendation to the MEXT for the University process. What are my chances at this point? I know the recommendation was just recently submitted, I just want to know if it's okay to be optimistic at this point haha. Also, when do you typically hear back with the official word? Or does this vary by University?

I am applying through University recommendation scheme as well. I am glad that you have already received such a great feedback from your prospective supervisor. You have good chances! The only thing I can say for now though is that you better be patient because the waiting game is just starting

I am, in fact, in your shoes rn, I have been in contact with my supervisor since last September and by now I have sent all documents via e-mail (including the Pledge, Field of Study and Research Plan, and even information about my local embassy and nearest airport). I want to believe that means that my chances are good as well But I know that the final confirmation is months away, and I probably have still much to do! So I just trying to find as much information as possible to ease the waiting

Let's just keep each other updated!

@Oshinko and by the way, do you know if you are applying for PGP or General Category scholarship? Both have different deadlines. If you're applying for General Category then you're going to receive final confirmation in May, if PGP - then in mid-July.

One of the professors agreed to accept me in his lab and helped me a lot preparing my research plan and promised me to recommend me for the scholarship. The primary screening results will come out on 3rd, February 2017. I am really nervous about it! Does anyone have any guess about how many slots Ritsumeikan has for MEXT?

In my case, the school I am applying to hasn't even proceeded my application to the International Office yet xD (the Office, apparently, deals with MEXT applications from all schools of the University). However, my case is rather special, because I am applying for PGP Scholarship.

This is great that you have so much support from your supervisor! It is definitely a good sign!
I don't think that overall number of slots for Ritsumeikan will help you evaluating your chances though. Total number of slots is divided by schools, so it is never quite clear how many places there are for your particular school (or even lab). Nevertheless, the February 3rd is not that far! You do have good chances, and I hope you will receive good news soon!

Thank you very much! I hope everything goes OK for all of us. The wait feels very excruciating though! Even though the professor assured me (back in september! I hope he hasn't forgot about me already!) to recommend my application and helped me out the research plan I fear that my not so great CGPA might get me kicked out from the primary screening. Also, I have heard most universities usually get 2/3 people to recommend for MEXT! That gives me the chills. Anywho, I hope everything goes well for you!

I want to ask that do any of you guys need to send original certificate of graduation and academic transcript to be checked and then returned during application process?

It makes me a bit nervous. I have received the original documents back but I feel a bit anxious about it. Also, do you think I have a good chance to pass the 1st screening if I have been asked about the nearest airport from my country to land in Japan?
