MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation

It's relieving to know some statistic like that. I have tried to do some research but as I expected finding student-affordable appartments is a sweaty effort. Most rooms that catch my attention are unfurnished and possibly already occupied.

Actually I am not in IME program, I will be enrolled as a student in regular (doctoral) program, awarded with a scholarship. I haven't booked a flight ticket yet. Actually I am rather confused about the correct order, which one should come first, applying for visa or booking a flight seat.

well I recommend wakeijuku. Everything is fully furnished and they cover your utility expenses and offer you breakfast and supper. It is only 30 min away from Hongo campus. I plan to apply after I get word from u-tokyo about dorms. Dormitory for male students | WAKEIJUKU


Oh yes. For some reason I thought you were doing something like physics or civil engineering. For either case you wouldn't be in the IME program anyway haha. To be honest the order really doesn't matter. You know that the official day of entrance on your award letter so you can book your flight around the entrance date. Perhaps you would like to wait for the dorm results first, however, to be finally sure about it. I booked my ticket early to secure a good seat, however, it may become pointless if I get into Mitaka and I need to come earlier because of the rules of that dorm.

Even if you are not in IME program, if you do the u-tokyo Japanese lessons class there may be a chance that we run into each other. We should definitely meet around the time school start.

For master, probably yes. But once you go to PhD, everyone is supposed to be able to speak English, I think.

well they at least don't advertise it as a english program on the school of engineering website
 
Hey, I am applying for October entrance this year for Hokkaido University.

I wonder if there is anyone here with case like me.
I am graduated my bachelor degree in less than 4 year (makes it less than 16 year study period), and also I am less than 22 years old now.
I already at the CoE process,then the administration office suddenly asked me about the study period.
What makes me worry is, after that there is no more email from them. They did say something about university dormitory application in mid July, yet I hear nothing until now.
I did send another email asking about the dormitory application, but also no response until now.
I wonder if my study period cause me ineligible.

Can you recall the exact number of months spent in your undergrad? I also finished my B.Sc. in less than 4 years (people in my college, which is probably from the same country as yours, normally term it 3.5 years / cum laude) although the exact number of months counted from the enrollment until conferment of my degree is 3 years and 8 months. The application system in UTokyo, the place where I am going to go, sets a rule such that as I recall if the number of months is greater than six then it will be rounded up to the next year counted.

Omg, I am applying for Hokkaido Uni as well for this year! I am so happy to hear there is someone in the same case as I am. I have been checking my email like crazy as well, because I haven't received anything from them. Your study period shouldn't be a problem, because I have the same and they said it wasn't a problem. Is it true you're from the Netherlands as well? If so, that would be really funny.

What laboratory/department did you apply for if I may ask?
 
I just wonder if you guys are already official recipients of MEXT scholarship. Because if yes, then they will be the one to book your flights going to Japan for free as part of scholarship. It's just confusing why you'd have to do it? Besides they are the ones to decide when you'll fly as far as I know.
 
Please accept my apologies, your confusion must be caused by our extended conversation about our situation. lawrence1 and I are not MEXT recipients, we receive UTokyo scholarship instead. I jumped in this thread because someone said that she is going to UTokyo by MEXT scholarship, it's nice to know fellow entrants.
 

Well me and, I believe also hiverloon, are under a university fellowship rather than the MEXT scholarship so we have to book our own flights. That is why I prefer the university recommended procedure for applying to MEXT since the university tends to recommend students the MEXT scholarship to those that they can't give their own scholarship to. I think it is just makes it easier for the students since they don't have to worry about send anything to MEXT or wait for MEXT to respond. It also allows you to apply for the MEXT scholarship for Ph.D if you start your masters in Japan. (since MEXT has a rule that can't be awarded the MEXT scholarship twice unless you go back to your home country after a few years).

No you are too kind. It is just because I spent a lot of time deciding which route I should use. It also helped that when I finally decided, the embassy recommended route deadline had just passed.

I spent three years and nine month. So it will be rounded as 4 years? I guess it means that it will be fine then

Haha... What happened was, it was actually holiday in Japan when I sent the email, so no one available to reply. Lol
I was freaked out because usually they reply like really fast.
They have reply it today and say that they will send us email today or tomorrow.
I am from Indonesia actually. I don't know what's wrong with the computer. it just happen to show Netherlands. Hehe...

Hi @Lawrence1 and @hiverloon ,I'm in Civil Engineering and i choose Komaba main lodge which is nearest my laboratory. I didn't know much about Todai and I have never been to Tokyo moreover my Japanese Language is poor ^ ^" .I wonder how can i survive there lol.
 
If you are awarded MEXT scholarship then you will most likely be placed in Komaba. I have never been in Tokyo either, only know the city from internet. Nevertheless, your lack of experience about your future place may prepare a lot of surprises for you. I am sure there are many Thai students in Tokyo as there are from other ASEAN countries, why not asking fellow Thai who already lived there.
 

Nice another engineer. I have never been to Tokyo either. I wouldn't worry about it too much since Tokyo has quite a few people that can speak english. Plus I am sure you will make many friends!

Komaba! My laboratory and most of my classes will be at Hongo. If you decide to enroll in the school of engineering Japanese language class, we may become classmates!

Ok. I should let you know that the Komaba dormitory should be only temporary housing for 1 year (even though you are guaranteed the housing like hiverloon said). After a year you will probably need to find either a non-todai dorm or an apartment. This happens to plenty of people so I am sure most of the friends you make or your lab mates will help you with it!

Great meeting you! It was honestly a surprise to find one person here going to todai, but now another one. It will be fun meeting you guys there.
