MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation

have you applied for the university recc scholarship? If yes, did the university contact you for this interview?

I have done a few interviews last year for another scholarship. They usually check your subject knowledge, Questions about your research area and why did you choose their lab specifically and why Japan and not somewhere else.

@indojindesu, thank you for the reply. The application for scholarship through the univ recommendation is in the same procedure as the application to the graduate school itself. This interview is a part of the application into the grad school, not the scholarship. I believe in my case, if I am accepted in this grad school they will automatically forward my application documents to some scholarship providers, including MEXT, under a written support from my prospective supervisor. So, for the scholarship procedure I won't be required to do another interview. And yes of course, the univ contacted me in advance to arrange for the time of the interview.

I see! All the best for the interview!

Thanks so much for your reply,
May I have some questions more?
Did you contact your desired prof before applying officially to GSIR? And The 1st interview email was also from your desired prof?
Let me introduce my case. My first round interview question was sent by the graduate school (they asked basic information about my education field, my study plan, my undergraduate thesis, why I chose Japan...) and in the 1st email, they said that if my answers to the 1st round question is relevant, 3 professors will contact me SEPARATELY for my 2nd and 3rd interview round. However, I've received the 2nd and 3rd interview round from one prof (he said in his emails that he is interviewing me on behalf of the other 2 profs) and it seems that I will not receive interview emails from the other 2 profs. I am very worried now that if I've been out of the selection and they did not inform me that thing.
Have you been through kind of things like me? I got some info from the previous applications (and now, they are course's students) that last year, 3 profs contacted applicants separately and they received 6 emails in total for 3 interview rounds.
Hope to hear something positive from you.

Hi! I'm new here.

I'm looking for all the possibilities, and I was wondering...
If I apply through university recommendation and get rejected, can I apply for embassy recommendation the next year?
Or MEXT won't accept me again?

Is anyone else applying via university recommendation at Kyoto University? I'm curious if all graduate schools are having problems with the application procedure this year. Apparently the deadline by MEXT is coming up (I think 18 February) and up to now my Graduate School only did a screening amongst the professors, to see who would like to recommend a student.

You can apply again as many times as you want, if you get rejected. Either uni or embassy recommendation, doesn't matter. As long as you don't have two active applications in the same year (i.e., a uni-rec and an embassy-rec for the same academic year).

The graduate school I applied for has already given out results of screening. It probably is different depending on the school.

OK thanks for your reply. For reference and other readers: I'm applying at the graduate school for informatics. And I also know of another person applying at the GSGES, where she also just got some information about the application procedure today.
I hope your results were positive? Which graduate school are you applying to?

Thank you!

So, to make sure... my plan is:
-Apply for university recommendation in November 2016, to enter the university in October 2017.
-If I get rejected, apply for embassy recommendation during 2017 to enter as a research student in April 2018.

The thing is...
The embassy application will start on April 2017.
If I get accepted by the university but then MEXT denies me the scholarship, I won't be able to continue that path. The problem is that as far as I know, MEXT final answer would be sent about July 2017, so I will be forced to start the embassy application in April anyway, just in case.

Would that be two active applications in the same year?

Sorry for the long post, I know it's a very specific question.

My potential supervisor at Kyoto (Graduate School of Science) just contacted me last week to ask if I'd like to give uni recommendation a try - I previously told him I would try at the embassy instead. The deadline was today, 21st Jan.

I didn't go for it because no way I could have got the documents, particularly the health form, on time - anyway he told me they can only put forward one candidate for the whole GSS so the embassy has better odds. But just to let others know.

@BennyDelon
I believe that if your application has been handed to MEXT by the university and then rejected, you cannot apply at the embassy the same year. However MEXT themselves are unlikely to reject you compared to the university itself.
Hope someone else can confirm this.

According to Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship | Scholarships for International Students | International Students | Prospective Students | Tokyo Institute of Technology this seems to be the case.

The Graduate School of Informatics also had only 1 open spot. I was filtered out by the school before sending in my documents based on the priority country list.

That's a good question...I was going to do the opposite path, originally (apply first to embassy-rec, then apply for uni-rec if rejected), so I'm not sure about these deadlines.
Maybe you should explain the situation to your embassy, and they can advise you. I don't suggest talking to the university about it, of course. Sorry!

Hi guys,
I got the email that I am on the list of candidates for MEXT, and they asked me to confirm my intention to study there.Upon confirming my intention, they will officially recommend me for the MEXT scholarship. Thus, how big my chance is? Anyone applied by Tokyo Tech? Have you heard any case that candidates from Tokyo Tech have been rejected by MEXT ?

Dear dont worry. you will be selected. There is no any case previous so be positive.
I also applied in Titech (SEP) but did not get my result yet. I emailed my professor and coordinator they said your result will be announce in the Mid of march.
By the way what id your major ?

From most of my friends and coordinator of IGP (A).. I have heared this... so dont be worry... Have you applied other universities too ?

I have got the admission letter from university for the course in Sept 2016. Can I apply for MEXT by embassy recommendation in this April 2016?

The university also has scholarship by uni recomendation, but they will announce in July 2016. In that case, can I apply for embassy recommendation which also has a test in July 2016?

@fadi932
Did you got an email from your Prof. yet ?
No i did not get any email from my prof yet... Actually I am on the waiting list in Utokyo maybe thats Y TITECH did not give me my results.... Do you any previous status of Waiting list candidate at Utokyo ?

Are you applying for the MEXT Scholarship at Tokyo University ? Did you say that to the people of TITECH ? If a selection committe for the MEXT Scholarship knows that a candidate is applying to 2 universities at the same time, the candidate is disqualified.

It is strictly prohibited by MEXT to have two applications at the same time. If you want more information in English, you can consult the following blog:

University MEXT Scholarship Eligibility | TranSenz: Expat Living in Japan
Disqualification criteria:

"Simultaneous Application to Multiple Universities
If you apply to multiple universities under the University-recommended MEXT scholarship and/or JASSO scholarship in the same year, or if you are currently receiving a MEXT or JASSO scholarship and will continue to receive it as of the month that your University-recommended MEXT scholarship is to begin.

Furthermore, if you apply to two universities and both recommend you for the scholarship, MEXT will not only cancel your scholarship, but may also rule all nominees from both universities ineligible! It is OK to apply to other universities as a fee-paying student, or under another scholarship scheme, just as the ADB or Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship, but don't try to mess with MEXT."
