MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation

Same with Reni plus the Field of Study part, May I know what that that Certificate of Eligibility is? Also, have you guys received a formal letter that you were recommended to MEXT. I only got an email confirmation as part of my conversation with the Osaka University Graduate School of Human Sciences staff but not really a formal notice or letter stating so...

Nope. My professor merely asked me to fill in an application form, pledge form and send them along with another required documents such as research proposal, English and Japanese proficiency certificate, transcript etc... I did not do any formal correspondence with the Faculty I applied at...

Yeah, same here. My professor just casually told me when I asked "oh, yes, I forgot to tell you, you passed the first screening and was recommended to the ministry".

Hi, Lacertoss.

In order to obtain the "College Student" Visa, you have to submit many documents to consulate. One of them is the Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Waseda grad school asked all international student to get this COE. However, I am not sure that I have to apply for it. Some people said that if we get the scholarship, we don't need the COE since MEXT (or uni ?) will somehow arrange the visa for us.

Oh, I see. Unfortunately, I don't know much about this, as I am trying not to concern myself with the bureacracy concerning the visa yet.

Anybody gets his/her result for MEXT scholarship (2015)? Do you have any information about the date of result announcement?

Hi, Russel.

We are all waiting for the results. Some uni inform the candidates that the results will be out in May.

Thank you so much for your information, I am waiting too, but they said end of April and now 10 days passed.:banghead:

Hi guys!
I am also part of that waiting game. However, I got a different deadline : Uni told me I would get the result in June. It seems it can vary much : I was told by someone that received the scholarship last year that MEXT can keep you waiting till July... Let's brace ourselves

Hi, Mallow.
There are two type of uni recommendation, i.e., general recommendation and special recommendation. For general recommendation, the screening results are usually out around April-May.

Last year, many uni also informed the student that the result would be released by the end of April. However, the actual announcement date was around the middle of May.

I was unaware about that, thanks. Can you tell me where I can find more information about that ?

I have checked Hiroshima University official website and I found out that Japanese Ministry of Education will give an announcement in the end of June 2015 directly to the university (for Mext Scholarship through University Recommendation). Probably we, who applied for through Mext Scholarship University Recommendation, will get the result from the university you applied at around early July.

I just received an e-mail from my professor, telling me that MEXT will announce the result around mid-May....

Hi everyone.

What's the difference between general and special recommendation? Is it about the degree program?

Looks like the program I applied to is under the special recommendation, because the university informed me that MEXT will notify them of the results by end of June and they (univ) will release the results of successful candidates by mid July.

Well, mid-May is like next week, so I guess we will all know soon enough. I'm pretty excited but also really nervous about that, hahaha.

From my understanding, in general recommendation, only 1-8 people from each uni could be nominated to be the scholarship recipient. Therefore, the selection process for general recommendation should be like this:

(1) each department/schools selects the candidates and recommends them to the higher-ups.
(2) the selection committee in each uni conducts another screening process and nominates the candidates to MEXT.

For special recommendation, MEXT reserves extra scholarship slots for each special program. Thus, if you pass the selection process conducted by the program committee, it means that you will surely be nominated to MEXT.

Thanks, b4lmung! That's really helpful. I am somehow comforted that I won't be competing with candidates from other programs for the scholarship slot, though I'm still not sure about my chances. The univ I am applying to did not post their historical data on the % of their MEXT approved recommendations. Just crossing my fingers that I'll get a good news on July!

After the info you gave me last time, I arrived at the same conclusions.

I was also unsure (I still am a bit, but a part of me feels reassured as well) since the % were not given by my univ. Apparently, we are in the same boat.
Which univ have you applied to, k78285 ?

I am applying at GRIPS. Which university are you applying for, Mallow? I am not sure if the % of MEXT grantees is something I can ask the university's admissions office. I don't want to push my luck so I can only wait for July. But the 100% approval rate of Kagoshima U for special recommendation is somehow reassuring. Good luck to us!

Same as you concerning the luck, I didn't dare to try. I am applying at Keio in Science&Technology.
Godd luck to us all !

I applied to special recommendation...

I am applying under the general program. The staff in the department where I am applying to in Osaka University told me before that there will be 21 total number of nominees to MEXT. I am not sure if this total is for general AND special recommendation or just the general recommendation though.

Osaka Uni has not divulged their % rate as well so in a way that makes me nervous since the numbers reflected in other school's links shown above show fewer number of nominees. The 21 looks like a huge number and it quite makes me nervous if say 5-8 only are picked. I am not sure if Osaka Uni has higher slots for their University Recommendation hence the high number of nominees.
