MEXT Scholarship (Graduate Students) 2017

It's not really a teacher, but I have a chrome extension called Mainichi that shows a new Japanese word every time I open a new tab. It's handy for keeping up with vocabulary! I've also been going through and self-translating (as in that really messy way you do for your eyes only when you're practicing) Easy NHK News articles as some self-driven practice.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum!

So far, you are the first one that I have encountered to say that is going to enter the Master's course in Mathematical Sciences. I am as well, but in Graduate School of Science at Kyoto University.

Nice. If I may ask, what's your research about? Kyoto was one of my options too, but I couldn't find a teacher interested on my research.

Hey Frida
I have been learning Japanese from one site I know , yes Japan dot com . there are a lot of free lessons and the other courses are really cheap.
Btw congrats for the selection !!
I am still awaiting mine hope I get it.

Congratulations to those who got their MEXT confirmation and university placement! The long wait is over. Cheers!

Hello niconico12, though I have yet to receive MEXT confirmation regarding the scholarship, I got an email instruction from U Tokyo student services to apply for a dormitory slot. If all goes well, I guess I'll see you in Komaba this April! Komaba International Lodge is at a very strategic location. 2 stations west there is shimokitazawa known for cheap clothes, good food and hipster vibe. 2 stations east is Shibuya (no further explanation needed). And Shinjuku station is just 160yen, 16mins away. The only issue I have with Komaba is it's way too expensive for a dorm. I envy those in Meidai, they're only paying 18k yen for a really nice dorm. >_<

(I stayed in Komaba for a couple of weeks when I got a fellowship 2 years ago).

So, everyone, let me share something to get your opinion on the matter.

Yesterday I sent an email to the local consulate, in order to assess whether I passed or not this final stage. I learned that the person in charge is on vacation, and her substitute replied my email. She didn't give me a straight confirmation like "it's over, you've passed", but told me that "the university had accepted you, and the person in charge will let you know of details regarding the pledge as soon as she returns. Please await two more weeks".

I'm hesitant to interpret this as the final confirmation, but surely sounds like it. Do any of you know whether the university acceptance may be considered said confirmation? I didn't want to ask further questions, as she had supposedly already answered me.

Other than that, congrats to everyone that has received this confirmation. A new time of our lives (mine included, hopefully) begins!

I hope you get the confirmation soon, and let's hope we both get accepted in the dorms!
I was in Japan this last month. I was thinking about renting an apartment for the time I'll be studying in Japan, so I went to see some, but I finally decided to go for the dormitories. Compared to renting an apartment is much cheaper and the best location we can have (except for the fact that it's next to the train line!).

Good thing that you sent that e-mail. I did send my embassy an e-mail asking about the final information on the scholarship and the person in charge wasn't on vacation but similarly like in your case she did tell me that the final result will be in two weeks. The final decision came to me the very next day! Objectively speaking I think that the good news will come to you as soon as your person in charge in the embassy returns from vacation.

I do have a prospective supervisor in the research field of Algebraic Geometry (the idea of Arakelov Geometry). What about you?

I really hope you are right, man.

Maybe now it would be an appropriate moment to create a group in a social media, as previously suggested.

yeah, and we should make a google sheet and put our three options and the one we were asigned to, I know it will be useful for future candidates.

Hello every one,
Happy to see all of you got an acceptance, I also had email from embassy.
i'm going to Nagoya institute of Technology, any one around !!

Nagoya here! Not confirmed yet, but since it was my only LoA, it is most likely that if accepted I will be sent to Nagoya University. What's your field of study?

Hi @AruanM
My field is computer science, Nagoya is great plus there is no reason that you won't pass, so just hold on and you will get the good news.

Thank you all for your kind words and for the language learning recommendations.
I have just withdrawn from my current university and... well.. there is no going back now!

I received the confirmation email from my embassy today. It said there's an orientation on 10th March and I guess it's compulsory since they said "Please make yourself free on that date" lol.

Congratulations everyone. Time to get out the Japanese textbooks and brush up on your kanji

I've been said to go to the orientation at embassy too, should be around the mid of march but as far as I know it's not compulsory. No harm in going though, I'll also apply for the visa on that day.

I'm currently busy with housing procedure, I'd like to go the university dorm but it seems for monbusho scholars it can be a six-months stay at maximum and all the cheap dorms are for international students, no monbusho scholars needed
I also tried to e-mail the international office to ask detailed info, especially because the room I was interested in is available from 8 April only and we're supposed to arrive earlier.
However the international office told me that more details will be available around mid-february and so to wait until then, but it's really ok to wait that long? What if the room is booked from others people?

I was thinking about searching non-dorms housing, already checked some and it seems there are cheap ones.
Have you guys who received the final notification already applied for dormitories?

Congrats to everyone! I too found out my university. I will be going to Tsukuba. At first I was a bit bummed because it's my third choice, but thinking about it it is maybe the best choice: i get to stay in tsukuba and put some money aside, and then if i get accepted into the master course I'll move to Tokyo.

Does anyone know the procedure? Do we all get to meet each other in the beginning? i know people from last year got together a few times...

Tsukuba here I come~. Anyone else going there in April? (I'll be studying Japanese linguistics.)
I'm going to Tsukuba! Although I'll be studying in the Engineering Faculty, I'm a Business graduate. My professor there is a Marketing specialist, and if I am admitted (and Monbusho accepts my request to proceed to Master's) I will be going to Tsukuba MBA What about you?

No news yet. Still waiting
You might have written it before, but what are your choices indojin? Did you put any you're not too happy about? If not, at this point there's nothing to be unhappy about you can just check 3 universities' dorms and fantasize where you'll be put.

If there's any you're not too happy about, you're in my situation, but think about this: even if you don't get your first choice, you're still gonna have an awesome time! And if you're too unhappy there, you can try switching schools (it is not 100% prohibited).

Keep cool, man. Your previous confirmation took some time as well, right? It'll be OK, you'll see.

As for making that group, does everyone here use FB? I have deleted mine a couple of years ago, but if necessary I'd reactivate it.

Hello every one,
Happy to see all of you got an acceptance, I also had email from embassy.
i'm going to Univ of Tsukuba (my first choice) ,Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering (Dept. of Engineering Mechanics and Energy), any one around !!

I do have a prospective supervisor in the research field of Algebraic Geometry (the idea of Arakelov Geometry). What about you?
I'll be studying Mathematical Physics. Pauli and Schrodinger Operators.

Thank you all for your kind words and for the language learning recommendations.

You had a 3 year's bachelor's degree too right? I assume you were in a Master's course in your university this year? Is it okay for you to withdraw from your current university?
I mean were your marks from your current course taken into consideration when you applied or something?
I will complete my Master's this year as well, I assumed they require my Master's degree too. (I'm just curious about this.)

Thanks haha and yes, i'l try to calm down and yes I do have a facebook account, hopefully most of the other members also have accounts. Its the most convenient option i think.
Hope I get to join that group lol
Hi, i'm happy with both my choices, its just that its getting a bit scary with everyone receiving their results and stuff lol

Thank you for your kind words

I'l post when I get some information now, wont spam everyone xD
Good luck with the dorms!
