Hi! I'l write down everything I know about both the routes. Maybe that will help you in making a decision.

1) Embassy route :

-Fixed number of seats per country
-Selection depends on the pool of candidates that year
-Applications being in May-June
-You have to pass written exams of English and/or Japanese language.
-Have to pass an interview
-Get to choose 3 universities and contact them for letter of acceptance
-Usually you start as a Research student and then attempt the entrance exam to enter your desired course.

2) University route :

-Fixed number of seats per university, usually one graduate school ends up with ONE seat per year. i.e they can recommend only one student.
-Applications begin in October
-Highly competitive,selection depends on your GPA and research experience
-usually you apply to only one university, if you get recommended by two universities, your application is rejected.
-Need to contact and be recommended by a Professor who works at the university
(Usually they select the students to be recommended early in the year)
-usually start as an student, dont have to attempt the entrance exams.

Firstly thanks . I would like to mention that universities have not yet announced the Mext scholarship in my country . So would it be better if I go for embassy .?

The Japanese universities announce the application dates on their websites. Each university has a different deadline.They WONT announce it specifically in your country or something.

Read the blogs I mentioned, you will understand the details.

You have missed the Embassy application deadline. Like I said it starts in May-June.
University recommendation MEXT will start in October.

You have missed the Embassy application deadline. Like I said it starts in May-June.
University recommendation MEXT will start in October.

Hello guys!

Long time! Been very busy with work.

Updates on my quest for LoA.

1. I received an LoA from the Nagoya University Graduate School of International Development Cooperation.

2. Today I received an email from the University of Tokyo GSII confirming my mailing address. But it was never mentioned in that email that I have been granted a Letter of Acceptance. It would be a waste of time for them to send a rejection letter by snail mail, right? *fingers crossed*

It was the same with my Waseda LoA. I was really curious about what was inside and luckily everything was positive.
I think you really should relax and wait until you get the parcel with LoA inside

Congrats! And they probably wont reject you. They did the same with me. Received an Email later with tracking details

I'l probably be in Shizuoka or Tokyo *if I get in* Would love to meet everyone!

Hello indojindesu! I really do hope it's positive! And I look forward to seeing you either in Tokyo or in Chubu area. Shizuoka U's main campus is stunning. Great view of Mount Fuji. Nagoya is not very far from Shizuoka.

Hey Kobayakawa,
I haven't applied to Shizuoka University I'l be there because my professor's lab is in Shizuoka! Its in the National Institue of Genetics Nagoya is about and hour or two away from shizuoka!
Lets hope we make it through the 2nd screening!

By the way, What is your last date for submitting the LoA to the Embassy?

After applying for APU's tuition reduction scholarship at the time of enrolment. Is it possible to again apply for Mext scholarship university recommendation. They say they will forward only highly qualified candidates but what are the chances of getting these both ?

Hi everyone!
I would like to apply for the MEXT scholarship via my Embassy in the year 2017 as a research student, and since this seems to be the most recent thread about research scholarships and graduate students, I hope it's ok to post here. There isn't a lot of info on the embassy's site in Croatia and some of it even differs from what I read on the japanese sites (maybe because of translation) so I just wanted to ask people with experience about it.

1. At the end of studying in Japan as research students do we get a degree? For example, I'm getting my bachelor's degree in a few months and wanted to study in Japan as a graduate student for my master's degree. Can I get my master's degree when studying with the research scholarship?

2. Also, in some places it says we need to have a graduation certificate/diploma when sending all the documentation in April, but on other sites it says you have time until September. I'll probably graduate for bachelor's in either April or May so it's kind of an important difference for me, since if April is the deadline, that's quite a problem for me since it's so close.

3. I would be applying for social sciences (I'm interested in departments like social services/social welfare/social work), so if anyone has experience with applying for something like that, it would be a great help if you shared some insight or advice.

Hello tenten, welcome to the forum.
Its best to follow the guidelines your embassy tells you because they know what they are doing and there might be different selection criteria in different countries.

You can switch to a Master's course or a PhD course provided you pass the university's entrance exam.
Initially, you will go as a research student (non-degree student) do some research or study for your entrance exam.
So yes, you can get a Master's degree via this scholarship.

This depends entirely on the Embassy in your country. Its better to ask them.

Sorry, I have no information about your field.

Good luck with your application.
Please remember, Its always a good idea to ask the Embassy about any doubts you might have. They are usually very helpful. They might even put you in touch with a scholarship recipient.

2. It should be possible to get a letter or confirmation from your University that states "This student is likely to pass requirements and will graduate on X day/X month", which I was allowed to submit with my application in Australia. Definitely double check with your Embassy guidelines to see if something like this is ok!

3. I'm in a different section of social sciences. I can't remember seeing anything specific along the lines of social services when I was researching for my placements, but a good place to start would probably be through the Global 30 site. Even if your Japanese is good enough to enter the Japanese courses, the site lets you filter degrees via area/discipline, which might be useful for getting a broad idea of what universities are interested in social work from an international standpoint. Remember that a big part of MEXT is about building connections to your home country and Japan, so finding research that can benefit both countries will help you a lot in the application process.

No idea.
We are just normal applicants for the MEXT Research student scholarship via the Embassy. We dont have any knowledge related to a specific university's workings.
Maybe you could start a new thread regarding your query?

Thank you all for your comments and continued positive countenance on this forum over the last few months. I've been lurking here shyly and it has really helped me throughout this process. I got my LoAs sent off to the Embassy in Australia a few days ago. I'm really excited for next year. So yeah, thanks guys! Start a new thread with all your questions. There are other people on this forum who might help you, people who dont read this thread in particular, and this threaf is specifically about Embassy recommendation.
If you start a new thread, it might help someone else who might be in a similar position.

I keep telling you to read the blog by TranSenz. It has ALL the information about University recommendation route.

I wont spoon feed you the information. Sorry. Everything is there in his blog

Also, you can always mail and ask the university the stuff you dont understand, I'm sure they will help you.
