MEXT Scholarship for Postgraduate 2010: General Discussions.

NeoXtremeX - Nice work on the seasonal greeting!
That looks great, I think the main part is personalising it for each professor (as it looks like you've done).
Good luck, I hope you get a reply soon.

Yeah. I hope so too, but I am under the impression that keio professors are on recess. I need to get a reply as soon as possible though.

Hi folks,

I got message from a prof from University of Tokyo that he is ready to be my sensei. Though there are more steps in getting a LoA... Anyone having any experience in getting a Letter of Acceptance from University of Tokyo? The academic unit is Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. I am planning to ask them to FAX it before mailing it to me as it will help me to submit by attachment form on time. I need to get a FAX no. in Japan for this... as I dont think they will FAX it to me in India.

Yeah. I hope so too, but I am under the impression that keio professors are on recess. I need to get a reply as soon as possible though.

I also get that impression. We have until the end of the month to get the forms in to Keio, when do you have to submit your LOA to the embassy? I think mine has to be in mid September.
In which department will you be studying at Keio? I'm applying for KMD.

And here's another one who bite the dust.

Its really incomprehensible, if not disappointing. I spent so much time, preparing a 7 page well-referenced, scientifically-formatted proposal and contacting professors; who ALL, approved and accepted my research proposal. I had to buy a new suit, a plane ticket and pay for my accommodation because the nearest consulate is located 1 1/2 hours away by plane from my city. I did relatively well on my interview, but not that well on my Japanese exam. Nevertheless; that shouldn't be a factor because they consider the best exam out of the two (Japanese & English). Then they had me wait for several weeks before taking the courtesy of mailing me and telling me that I did not qualify for the scholarship because of "lack of allotted slots". I am not even an "alternative", I did not qualify -at all!! Such an outrage! I spoke with the program coordinator and she told me that the decision came from the embassy. Apparently, she needs time before she's able to get permission to contact them for details, but she tried to help me as much as possible; promising me that she will contact me on a later date once she gets the information. We'll see how that happens. To add more insult to injury, I got laid off from work after I returned. 2009 is definitely not my year.

In the meantime, I want to examine this and figure out what exactly went wrong. I am not giving up a fight easily, so I am going to reapply next year and possibly consider other alternatives as well. Congratulations to those who made it, and tough luck for those who don't. Lets not give up easily!

Quick question for those who were accepted to TouDai.

Arent you supposed to be 1-kyuu before even considering attending that school? or did your supervisors not care about your japanese ability so much?

Another question for those who have been accepted to Keio.

Keio asks for applicants to select keio as their one and only option for study in Japan? Did you comply to this request? or did you write more universities and still get an acceptance from Keio?

Thanks in advance!

I'd be interested to hear from people accepted to Keio, too. I complied with the request - Keio is my one and only choice! Well, it is the first place I want to go. I hope I get a LOA though, otherwise it will be a LOOOOONG wait to January to see if I'm accepted.

what's with this Jan/Feb thing? do we all have to wait til then whether we have LoA or not to see if we're really in? I don't cope well with being in limbo >.<

Neo: joo scares me!!! i didn't know that - now i'm feeling the pressure. I described myself as fluent in my CV and the prof hasn't asked anything else about it, just seemed super enthusiastic to have me. "fluent" is tenuous though >.< i'm veeeerry rusty. he's sent me a bio textbook in japanese.. perhaps he's expecting wonders~ **strained laugh**

Haha I don't want to scare you. This is what i am talking about though:

Note to parts in bold. Anyway, I sent a bunch of emails to professors in Toudai just in case. I am hoping for the best!

@NeoXtremeX
Hi, I'm also applying for Toudai :).
But the requirements that I found is different, maybe because of different school?

Hello! I've been away for a long...long... time. :) About Todai, yup, every graduate school has different requirements. Like in my case, they don't accept research students, only regular masters students. Therefore, I will have to look for elsewhere for do my research, and then take the entrance exam to enter that particular school in Oct.

By the way, it is the summer holidays now in Japan. (10-17 Aug) So, replies will be slow. I will only get my LoA after the 17th... *cry*

Also, where are all the Malaysians??? MIA!

whewt. yeah i got sent pretty much the same guidelines as nyfa; no mention of proficiency tests. good luck you both! would be nice if we all made it ^^

Yes it's also the same with me, my LoA will be delayed maybe even until end of august T_T

hi ekoy...im here.. :)

i had the same problem with the graduate school that i wanted in kyoto u..they apparently dont accept research students...therefore i have to apply to be a research student under another school...which i din really want cos their research topics arent of my interest..so i decided to try kyushu and waseda...

I ve ady received the LoA frm kyushu. However, waseda will take some time in the application process..
have u received any LoA? btw, im kind of confused...why is it tht we need to get more thn one LoA? isnt 1 sufficient?

shazz! No way! I will be getting one from Kyushu as well, after the summer break. However, my area of research is very similar to the one in Kyushu.

Like ooilingfan mentioned sometime ago, the uni selection process is similar to our UPU where we were given 8 choices.

I am curious to know whether you are taking an arts subject, shazz? Quite unfortunate for us eh?

Hmm I don't mean to steer away the conversation so by all mean please continue....but..

I've sent over 15 emails to different professors this past week. Only 1 reply and it was negative. Do you guys reckon its cause of the break?

I sure hope so. This is proving to be the hardest part of the application for sure.

I do believe so. When I submitted my application to graduate school last Friday, the admission lady already told me that replies are going to be slow cause the uni is taking summer break for several days. But that's for one uni that I applied. Another uni might have longer break than that.

But still, keep your fingers crossed :).

thats great ekoy! glad to know that you will be getting one from kyushu as well...are u waiting for others too?
my field is clinical psychology..its actually really hard to find a supervisor with the same research area. I have to change my research proposal to suit one of the professors that i asked... and i still havent replied his email..cos i cant come up with a specific topic that is of his interest... :( what is your field?

so far i only got 1 LoA...but maybe i should start emailing other profs from other universities jus in case..

hi NeoXtremeX...i think generally it depends on the professors...i guess its just whether they actually really do check their emails...i sent a lot of emails (cant keep count) and i only got replies from a few..and most of them declined...dont give up...just try emailing more professors...eventually u will get a positive reply...another way is to email the international students division of the university and ask them for some guidance..they might help you get in touch with the professors..good luck!

Thanks guys! That is really comforting. I was getting really worried.

Nonetheless, today I called the representative from the embassy I speak the most to about the scholarship and she said that even if i don't get a LoA by the time the application is mailed to Japan MEXT will still try to get me admission to the universities I listed in my application.

I wrote Keio, toudai and meidai (nagoya u). I hope we all get in where we want to.

Well, the message that I got last from the Office of International Students at Todai was that the final decision regarding me will be taken in a meeting on 4th Sept and then only a Certificate of Acceptance will be issued which shall be the formal document of being accepted as a research student.... It will reach me earliest by mid September.... This particular graduate school doesn't provide letter of acceptance...

My deadline for submitting attachment form is on 24th Aug.. the embassy here told me that maximum they can wait is till 25 26... :? Though they suggested me to write my choice as 'acquiring' during submission and later when I get the document :? I don't know if it will reduce my chances :?

Another interesting fact that I observed is that if one professor rejects you from a university
then OIS will 'suggest' you to find another university...

I can understand your situation... I think mostly people contact 20+ profs... I was a bit specific about the choice of my univ and contacted a lot lesser number of profs. So I got 2 rejects and 1 accept... Rest didn't even reply, I asked one of my sempai who is currently studying in Japan and it seems that in Japan it is not considered good to say "No" outright hence a "No" is more subtle and you have to figure it out yourself... this is troublesome for us as we are not contacting them face to face.

Greeting,

I am a newbie here, asking for guidance.

I passed the preliminary selection of monbukagakusho research student 2010.
I contacted Kyoto University, Tohoku, Nagoya, Ritsumeikan, Kobe, and Waseda. All the center of international students there replied to my inquiries except kyodai, but none of the professors reply my messages, except kyodai.

Overall, untill now i only have one professor from kyodai and he told me the university will deliver LoA by 24th august.
I am really relieved with that but i want to make sure regarding the issue to the faculty (i'm applying for faculty of economics), i want to ask them to fax or mail me the soft copy of LoA so i can show it to the embassy in my country soon, but they don't even provide email address in their website.

What should i do?

i am afraid the LoA won't reach me, and the remaining universities i applied to still don't give any response.....

thanks before

Hi yussu,
Nice to have another fellow countrymate decide to show up in here.
I don't know if my answer can help you but at least I'll try to answer it

As most of the people experiencing here now, low reply is because of the summer vacation in Japan, how long the holiday ? each universities vary so maybe the professor you are contacting now is on vacation so he/she can't respond to your email. Just try to email them again after this week hopefully you can receive positive response.

Sorry before but I don't quite understand about your question...so your Professor already promised you the LoA but you want to ask the LoA to be sent by fax/email is that right ?
if you can't find the contact for the faculty, can you ask it to your Professor ?
In my case is differ for each university that I applied
In Shizuoka, I mostly contact my Professor if I have question regarding LoA and then he forward my question to the faculty administration
In Waseda, I mostly contact the Center for International Education (CIE) staff for my LoA, my Professor direct me to contact the CIE regarding the LoA matters.
In Tsukuba is mostly the same as Shizuoka.
I already received one LoA via email from my professor in Shizuoka while the others don't give any replies for the last few days (I do hope they are on vacation instead of ignoring me)
Anyway our embassy give deadline until the end of September for LoA, so don't worry about it to much if you can't give them tomorrow and you can take your time while contacting the Professor.

thx to arap for replying my message and sorry i'm not good at structuring sentences.

yes my prof in kyoto promises me to give LoA by August 24th, but i want to make sure about this to the faculty, so i need to contact them but they don't provide any email address to contact....

because the remaining universities have not gave even a single response, the LoA from kyodai is my last hope...

Btw i got advice from my senior that its better to contact just one prof each univ, to evade any misunderstanding between prof. in same univ.,

i think i'll look for more prof, thx for your suggestion..:p
